Loop Transformations For Clustered Vliw Architectures, Yi Qian Jan 2002

Loop Transformations For Clustered Vliw Architectures, Yi Qian

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

With increasing demands for performance by embedded systems, especially by digital signal processing (DSP) applications, embedded processors must increase available instructionlevel parallelism (ILP) within significant constraints on power consumption and chip cost. Unfortunately, supporting a large amount of ILP on a processor while maintaining a single register file increases chip cost and potentially decreases overall performance due to increased cycle time. To address this problem, some modern embedded processors partition the register file into multiple low-ported register files, each directly connected with one or more functional units. These functional unit/register file groups are called clusters.

Clustered VLIW (very long …

Modeling The Evolution Of Anisotropy In Al-Li Alloys: Application To Al–Li 2090-T8e41, Omar S. Es-Said, Hamid Garmestani, Surya R. Kalindi, L. Williams, Cristiane Maria Basto Bacaltchuk, C. Fountain, Eui W. Lee

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works

It is widely reported in current literature that the precipitation hardened Al–Li sheet alloys exhibit extremely high anisotropy in yield (and ultimate tensile) strength, which is well beyond what can be explained as purely a consequence of the strong crystallographic texture in the material (e.g. J. Mater. Sci. Eng. A265, 1999, 100). This paper presents a crystal plasticity based modeling framework that will (i) facilitate the segregation of the contributions to the overall anisotropy from crystallographic texture and precipitation hardening, and (ii) correlate the contribution from precipitate hardening to either co-planar slip activity or the non-coplanar slip activity in the …

Popper Vs The Armchair Economists, Gerardo L. Largoza Jan 2002

Popper Vs The Armchair Economists, Gerardo L. Largoza

DLSU Business & Economics Review

ARE ECONOMISTS GUILTY of not practising what they preach? Do they pay no more than lip service to the importance of constructing falsifiable theories? Does much of what passes as science among the economic illuminati actually fail to meet the standards of proper (Popperian) methodology? These are the questions posed by Mark Blaug in his 1980 text, "The Methodology of Economics (Or How Economists Explain)".

The Effect Of Capital Market Liberalization Measures On The Integration Of The Philippine Stock Market With International Markets: Evidence From Johansen's Multivariate Cointegration Procedure¹, Angelo A. Unite

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Given the recent developments in the liberalization and internationalization of the Philippine capital market, it is important to re-examine the issue of Philippine equity market integration with the international equity markets.• In particular, this study will investigate the impact of the domestic capital market liberalization on the degree of integration of the equity market of the Philippines with those of its top sources of foreign investments and major trading partners in the Asia-Pacific region, namely, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States.

Komparasi Regresi Ekonometri Pada Perekonomian Indonesia 2sls, Vec, Dan Arima, Henry Viriya Surya, Prastowo Cahjadi

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

This paper compares three models of econometric analysis on economy, in this case the Indonesian economy. The regression models are the two stage least squares (2SLS) which has a strong support from the economic theory of aggregate expenditure, the Vector Error Correction (VEC) and Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) which both comes from the time series analysis, that do not have to be economic time series. The study tries to find out which are most 'suitable in analyzing the time series of Indonesian economy.

After all the estimation and comparison process, we finally agree that the use of those different …

The Printer's Manuscript, Ronald E. Romig Jan 2002

The Printer's Manuscript, Ronald E. Romig

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Ronald Romig, archivist for the RLDS Church (now renamed the Community of Christ), played a significant role in Royal Skousen’s critical text project. Romig was responsible for overseeing the handling of the printer’s manuscript of the Book of Mormon, which was made available on two different occasions for Skousen to examine for his research. Skousen also examined over twenty copies of the first edition of the Book of Mormon belonging to the Community of Christ. Romig explains his responsibilities and the process of assisting Skousen in the project and also mentions how Skousen’s work has improved the relationship between the …

The Systematic Text Of The Book Of Mormon, Royal Skousen Jan 2002

The Systematic Text Of The Book Of Mormon, Royal Skousen

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Royal Skousen explains in detail the internal consistency of the original text of the Book of Mormon. He references several verses of the Book of Mormon to discuss five main points: consistency in meaning; systematic phraseology; variation in the text; conjectural emendation; and revising the text. By examining these five aspects, Skousen shows that neither the message nor the doctrine of the Book of Mormon loses credibility as a result of textual changes. Skousen also mentions that the consistency in the manuscripts suggests that Joseph Smith did not receive the text as a concept but rather received it word for …

Fragments Of The Original Manuscript, Robert J. Espinosa Jan 2002

Fragments Of The Original Manuscript, Robert J. Espinosa

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Robert Espinosa was approached by Royal Skousen in 1991 with a request for him to join Skousen on the critical text project of the Book of Mormon. Espinosa shares his experience working with Skousen and the developments that they were able to make. After meeting with the owners of some fragments of the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon, Espinosa and Skousen were able to conserve, examine, and photograph the fragments. They also carefully analyzed the physical characteristics of the printer’s manuscript.

Rice V. Cayetano: The Supreme Court Declines To Extend Federal Indian Law Principles To Native Hawaiians Sovereign Rights, Jeanette Wolfley Jan 2002

Rice V. Cayetano: The Supreme Court Declines To Extend Federal Indian Law Principles To Native Hawaiians Sovereign Rights, Jeanette Wolfley

Faculty Scholarship

As I read and reread the Rice decision, I realized how similar it is to the trend in the recent Indian law cases decided by the Supreme Court. For example, Rice, in many respects, represents the discomfort the Justices feel for upholding "special treatment" of Native Americans under the law. The Court in Rice reversed the Ninth Circuit's decision allowing the State of Hawaii to conduct a Natives-only election of trustees to administer a trust to benefit Native Hawaiians. It found that the Fifteenth Amendment, adopted after the Civil War to prevent states from denying the elective franchise to former …

The Rehnquist Court And The End Of Constitutional Stare Decisis: Casey, Dickerson And The Consequences Of Pragmatic Adjudication, William S. Consovoy Jan 2002

The Rehnquist Court And The End Of Constitutional Stare Decisis: Casey, Dickerson And The Consequences Of Pragmatic Adjudication, William S. Consovoy

Utah Law Review

In light of the Rehnquist Court's misuse of stare decisis, and the Court's repeated admonitions that stare decisis is a doctrine of policy, not a command, this Article suggests the abrogation of stare decisis from the Supreme Court's analysis of constitutional issues. Policies are designed to foster beneficial outcomes. When stare decisis is viewed in the context of relevant case law, particularly Casey and Dickerson, it is apparent that this haphazard and consequentialist application of stare decisis is not a benefit, but a detriment. Although abandoning stare decisis has consequences, those consequences are administrative and have no impact on the …

Objects For Lexical Analysis, Bernd Kuhl, Axel-Tobias Schreiner Jan 2002

Objects For Lexical Analysis, Bernd Kuhl, Axel-Tobias Schreiner

Articles

This paper presents a new idea for lexical analysis: lolo (language-oriented lexer objects) is strictly based on the object orientation paradigm. We introduce the idea behind the system, describe the implementation, and compare it to the conventional approach using lex[1] or flex[2].lolo[3] extracts symbols from a sequence of input characters belonging to the ASCII or Unicode sets. lolo scanners can be extended without access to the source code: symbol recognizers can be derived by inheritance and an executing scanner can be reconfigured for different contexts. Recognizer actions are represented by objects which may be replaced at any time. Recognizers need …

Breaching Moral Rights: Is There A Legal Remedy?, Rebekah Powell Jan 2002

Breaching Moral Rights: Is There A Legal Remedy?, Rebekah Powell

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Throughout the history of the theatre there have been various interpretations of dramatic work that, arguably, have not followed the original vision of the playwright. Do modem Canadian playwrights have a better chance of controlling the production of their plays? The original copyright for a play belongs to the playwright who may sell or assign it. In addition, the playwright has moral rights to the play, which are inalienable but may be waived. The essence of these rights is the ability to protect one's work from being altered, distorted or presented as the work of another. Here, the various legal …

A Comparison Of The Use Of Artificial Neural Networks, Fractal Time Series And Fractal Neural Networks In Financial Forecasts, Beverly A. Swisshelm Jan 2002

A Comparison Of The Use Of Artificial Neural Networks, Fractal Time Series And Fractal Neural Networks In Financial Forecasts, Beverly A. Swisshelm

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Effective prediction of future financial states has been a major quest for groups ranging from national governments to individual investors. The size, diversity and complexity of financial markets make traditional statistical methods ineffective in predicting beyond a very short time frame. Alternative models using artificial neural networks and fractal time series have had better results in long-term predictions, but still do not work in all situations. This dissertation combined features of artificial neural networks and fractal time series to create a fractal neural network. Fractals exhibit repetitive patterns when a unit is broken down into its components. This similarity property …

Brothers Across Enemy Lines: A Mission President And A German Soldier Correspond During World War I, Jeffery L. Anderson Jan 2002

Brothers Across Enemy Lines: A Mission President And A German Soldier Correspond During World War I, Jeffery L. Anderson

BYU Studies

The First World War destroyed millions of lives and billions of dollars' worth of property. In peacetime, each death is a tragedy, while in war the deaths of millions become a statistic. One of the lives lost among the statistics is that of Wilhelm Kessler (fig. 1), a German citizen and Latter-day Saint who cut short his mission to enlist in the German army. His correspondence with his mission president, Hyrum W. Valentine, reflects both his patriotism and his love for the gospel and the Saints. Valentine's letters in return express his love for this young man, a love that …

Generalized Physical Approach Of Estimating Areal Probable Maximum Precipitation (Pmp) For Plain Region Of The Godavari River Basin (India) Jan 2002

Generalized Physical Approach Of Estimating Areal Probable Maximum Precipitation (Pmp) For Plain Region Of The Godavari River Basin (India)

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

In this paper a generalized physical approach of estimating areal probable maximum precipitation (PMP) for the non-orographic region of the Godavari river basin has been developed. In this method, highest average areal rain depths of different size areas and duration from the major rainstorms were considered, using 105 years rainfall data (1891-1995). The transposition limits of major rainstorms have been identified. The Depth-Area-Duration (DAD) rain depths were then moisture maximized at its original location of occurrence and then transposed at different grid points. After applying various corrections, Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) values at different grid points were estimated. By using …

The Aesthetics Of American Law, Pierre Schlag Jan 2002

The Aesthetics Of American Law, Pierre Schlag

Publications

Before the ethical dreams and political ambitions of law can even be articulated, let alone realized, the aesthetics of law have already shaped the medium within which those projects will have to do their work. This work attempts to retrieve and expose those recurrent forms that shape the creation, apprehension, and identity of law. What is at stake is an attempt to reveal the aesthetics within which American law is cast. The point is not simply to appreciate these aesthetics, but to understand how "substantive" conflicts in law are often motivated, sustained and circumscribed by the aesthetics through which they …

Incentives To Create Under A "Lifetime-Plus-Years" Copyright Duration: Lessons From A Behavioral Economic Analysis For Eldred V. Ashcroft, Avishalom Tor, Dotan Oliar

Journal Articles

In this Article, we highlight for the first time some of the significant but hitherto unrecognized behavioral effects of copyright law on individuals' incentives to create and then examine the implications of our findings for the constitutional analysis of Eldred v. Ashcroft. We show that behavioral biases - namely, individuals' optimistic bias regarding their future longevity and their sub-additive judgments in circumstances resembling the extant rule of copyright duration - explain the otherwise puzzling lifetime-plus-years basis for copyright protection given to individual authors, and reveal how this regime provides superior incentives to create. Thus, insofar as the provision of increased …

E Pluribus Unum: The Aftermath Of September 11, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 2002

E Pluribus Unum: The Aftermath Of September 11, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

September 11 forged an American unity not seen since Pearl Harbor. We shelved our political differences, put the culture war on simmer, and lost interest in celebrity scandal (think of Gary Condit). Americans rallied behind our Commander-in-Chief, and we agreed that our lives would never be the same. America’s vacation from history had ended, and we had forever lost our innocence and our perceived immunity from harm. When our Commander-in-Chief said that a return to “normalcy” would deny Bin Laden his victory, we rallied behind that, too.

Pre-Emption And Exception: The Us Moves Beyond Unilaterism, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2002

Pre-Emption And Exception: The Us Moves Beyond Unilaterism, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

The Administration of George W. Bush is by now famous for its unilateralism. In its first months in office, the Administration made clear that it would not cooperate in major multilateral initiatives on the environment, arms control, and human rights. The September 11 attacks caused a momentary lull in the pursuit of unilateralism, but by November 2001, the lull was over. Unilateralism was back in full swing. Unilateralism, however, does not necessarily violate international law. The international legal system was formed to accommodate independent, sovereign states. It provides plenty of space for states to »go it alone.« And while it …

Grateful Cooperation: Cistercian Inspiration For Ecological Ethics, Jame Schaefer Jan 2002

Grateful Cooperation: Cistercian Inspiration For Ecological Ethics, Jame Schaefer

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

As scholars of world religions search for promising ways of responding to the ecological crisis, the Christian tradition can look for inspiration to Descriptio Positionis Seu Situationis Monasterii Claraevallensis, a twelfth-century description of the site and surroundings of Clairvaux abbey. The text exudes the unnamed author's deep appreciation and gratitude for the cooperative interactivity of human beings, other species, the land, water, and air that assured their mutual sustainability and maintained the site's integrity. This view predates by centuries the efforts of contemporary philosophers to reflect on the human relation to other biota and abiota that constitute ecological systems, to …

This Man's Heart: Masculinity In The Poetry Of E.E. Cummings, Willis John Whitesell Iii Jan 2002

This Man's Heart: Masculinity In The Poetry Of E.E. Cummings, Willis John Whitesell Iii

Masters Theses

"This Man's Heart: Masculinity in the Poetry of E.E. Cummings" explores changing masculinity in the life and poetry of E.E. Cummings. The relationship between Cummings and his father, his first male role model, became strained when Cummings was a teenager finding his own male identity. As he rebelled against his father, a Unitarian minister, he began writing poetry in a modernist style under the direction of a new mentor, Ezra Pound.

Cummings' early modernist poems criticize conventional male roles and configurations of masculinity as outdated. As Cummings continued to grow as a man and writer, he confronted new realities which …
