Applying The Constructivist Framework To Elementary School Social Studies: Benefits For Young Learners And Preservice Teachers, Nancy P. Gallavan
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
The constructivist framework provides elementary school teachers with pedagogical guidance and professional support particularly effective for teaching and learning social studies benefiting both their young learners and their preservice teachers. Research conducted with approximately 100 elementary school teachers produced three key conditions for applying the constructivist framework competently to social studies education. Findings from this research revealed that elementary school teachers believe that foremost they must he cognizant of and proficient in their: (1) knowledge, skills, and attitudes of social studies content and purposes, (2) understanding for developing social studies curriculum and methods for communicating the social studies effectively both …

The 'Most Important And Fundamental' Distinction In Logic, G. C. Goddu
The 'Most Important And Fundamental' Distinction In Logic, G. C. Goddu
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In this paper I argue that the debate over the purported distinction between deductive and inductive arguments can be bypassed because making the distinction is unnecessary for successfully evaluating arguments. I provide a foundation for doing logic that makes no appeal to the distinction and still performs all the relevant tasks required of an analysis of arguments. I also reply to objections to the view that we can dispense with the distinction. Finally, I conclude that the distinction between inductive and deductive arguments is not one of the most important and fundamental ideas in logic, but rather is unnecessary.
Estimation Of Diffusion Coefficient Of Lithium In Carbon Using Ac Impedance Technique, Qingzhi Guo, Venkat R. Subramanian, John W. Weidner, Ralph E. White
Estimation Of Diffusion Coefficient Of Lithium In Carbon Using Ac Impedance Technique, Qingzhi Guo, Venkat R. Subramanian, John W. Weidner, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
The validity of estimating the solid phase diffusion coefficient, Ds, of a lithium intercalation electrode from impedance measurement by a modified electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method is studied. A macroscopic porous electrode model and concentrated electrolyte theory are used to simulate the synthetic impedance data. The modified EIS method is applied for estimating Ds. The influence of parameters such as the exchange current density, radius of active material particle, solid phase conductivity, porosity, volume fraction of inert material, and thickness of the porous carbon intercalation electrode, the solution phase diffusion coefficient, and transference number, on the …
Ability Of Native American Tribes To Waive Their Tribal Sovereign Immunity In Clear And Unequivocal Contracts To Arbitrate - C&(And)L Enterprises, Inc. V. Citizen Band Potawatomie Tribe Of Oklahoma, The, Emily J. Huitsing
Journal of Dispute Resolution
Native American tribes enjoy immunity from suits on contracts made on or off a reservation.2 A tribe is subject to suit only if it has clearly waived its immunity or Congress has expressly authorized the suit.' Tribal immunity was given to the tribes on the principle that tribes are sovereigns or quasi sovereigns enjoying immunity from judicial attack absent their consent.4 The purpose of tribal sovereignty, according to the Supreme Court, is to promote tribal economic development and self-sufficiency.5 Though the Court has expressed its dissatisfaction with the doctrine in light of increased tribal economic self-sufficiency through successful business ventures, …
No Out For The Federal Government: Enforcing Contractual Arbitration Clauses In Federal Government False Claims Actions - U. S. V. Bankers Ins. Co., Sarah A. Wight
Journal of Dispute Resolution
As a party to one-fourth of all civil litigation2 the federal government exerts a looming presence in American judicial proceedings. Thus, attempts by the government to elude obligations under arbitration agreements, if successful, would significantly impact the elite status that pre-dispute contractual arbitration clauses currently hold.' This casenote examines how the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit recently addressed this issue in the context of a false claims action.
Electrochemical Filtering Of Co From Fuel-Cell Reformate, Balasubramanian Lakshmanan, Wayne Huang, John W. Weidner
Electrochemical Filtering Of Co From Fuel-Cell Reformate, Balasubramanian Lakshmanan, Wayne Huang, John W. Weidner
Faculty Publications
A proton exchange membrane fuel cell was used as a flow reactor for continuous preferential oxidation of CO over H2 from 1.0% CO in H2 under pulse-potential control. By varying the pulse profile ~e.g., on-time, off-time, pulse potential! the CO and H2 oxidation currents were varied independently. The improvement in faradaic selectivity between CO and H2 oxidation results from the promotion of CO adsorption during the off ~i.e., open-circuit! portion of the pulse. Therefore, during the on portion CO oxidation was preferred while the surface was covered with CO.

Anodic Behavior Of Ti In Koh Solutions: Ellipsometric And Micro-Raman Spectroscopy Studies, A. Prusi, Lj. Arsov, Bala Haran, Branko N. Popov
Faculty Publications
Anodic formation of oxide films on titanium surfaces, in various concentrations of aqueous KOH solutions, have been studied using ellipsometry and micro-Raman spectroscopy. By in situ ellipsometric measurements the coefficient of film thickness growth and indexes of refraction of anodic oxide films have been determined. The voltage at which the oxide film breaks down is strongly dependent on the KOH concentration. Further, the solution concentration strongly influences the potential at which the oxide film is transformed from the amorphous state to crystalline form. Using micro-Raman spectroscopy four crystalline forms of titanium oxides, namely, anatase, brookite, corundum, and rutile, have been …

Modeling The Effects Of Electrode Composition And Pore Structure On The Performance Of Electrochemical Capacitors, Changqing Lin, Branko N. Popov, Harry J. Ploehn
Faculty Publications
This work presents a mathematical model for charge/discharge of electrochemical capacitors that explicitly accounts for particle-packing effects in a composite electrochemical capacitor consisting of hydrous RuO2 nanoparticles dispersed within porous activated carbon. The model is also used to investigate the effect of nonuniform distributions of salt in the electrolyte phase of the electrode in the context of dilute solution theory. We use the model to compare the performance of capacitors with electrodes made from different activated carbons and to investigate the effects of varying carbon content and discharge current density. Even at low discharge current density, concentration polarization in …

Detecting Single Wheat Kernels Containing Live Or Dead Insects Using Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy, Elizabeth B. Maghirang, Floyd E. Dowell, James E. Baker, James E. Throne
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
An automated NIR system was used over a two-month storage period to detect single wheat kernels that contained live or dead internal rice weevils at various stages of growth. Correct classification of sound kernels and kernels containing live pupae, large larvae, medium-sized larvae, and small larvae averaged 94, 92, 84, and 62%, respectively. Pupae + large larvae calibrations were developed using live or dead internal insects. Validation results showed correct classifications ranging from 86 to 96% over the two-month storage period. Thus, wheat kernels containing either live or dead insects can be used to develop calibrations for detecting both live …

Impact Of Intensive Cropping Systems On Physical Properties Of Surface Soils, G.A. Peterson, D.G. Westfall, L.A. Sherrod, T. M. Shaver
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The objective of this paper is to report the cumulative effects of cropping system intensification on the near surface soil physical properties (surface one inch of soil) within the Colorado dryland agroecoystem project, which has been in existence since 1986. Intensifying cropping systems from wheat-fallow to wheat-com-fallow to continuous cropping, increased crop residue return to the soil. Returning more residue to the soil surface: (I) decreased bulk density; (2) increased effective porosity; (3) increased sorptivity; (4) increased macro soil aggregation; and (5) appeared to improve potential water capture of the overall system. Increases in surface soil aggregation and effective porosity …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Soil organic carbon (SOC) in the surface soils has increased when summer fallow is reduced or eliminated in the central Great Plains. We evaluated the effect of no-till cropping systems of WF, wheat-com-fallow (WCF), wheat-corn-millet-fallow (WCMF), opportunity cropping (OPP), and native grass species (G) on particulate organic matter (POM-C) and mineral associated C in the silt and clay fractions. Soil organic carbon (SOC) has increased with increasing cropping intensity after 12 years, of no-till management. Particulate organic matter C accounted for 38 to 52 % of the total SOC in the 0-2.5 cm and 24 to 48 % of the …

Thermal Death Kinetics And Heatingrate Effects For Fifth-Instar Cydia Pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), S. Wang, J. N. Ikediala, J. Tang, J. D. Hansen
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Thermal death kinetic parameters of fifth-instar codlingmoths (Cydia pomonella (L.)) and the effect of three heating rates (1°Cmin-1, 10°Cmin-1, and 18°Cmin-1) on larval mortality were determined by a heatingblock system. The insects were heated to four temperatures (46°C, 48°C, 50°C, and 52°C) held for predetermined periods followed by 24 h storage at 4°C before mortality evaluation. Thermal death kinetics for fifth-instar codlingmoths followed a 0.5th order of kinetic reaction. Minimum time required to achieve 100% mortality of a given population decreased with temperature in a semi-logarithmic manner. No larval survival was observed in …

Changes In Muscle Function And Motorneuron Excitability Of The Triceps Surae Following A Bout Of Fatiguing Eccentric Exercise, Mikala Pougnault
Theses : Honours
A reduction in capacity of the neuromuscular system associated with exercise can occur from a wide range of physiological and psychological factors. Many researchers have investigated neural activation during exercise, or the effects of muscle damage associated with eccentric exercise, but few have studied the prolonged effects of a bout of eccentric exercise on strength and motorneuron excitability. Eleven male and female subjects (aged 20-43 years) were tested to determine the effects of a fatiguing bout of eccentric exercise upon maximal isometric plantarflexion strength, motorneuron excitability, and neural activation of the soleus (SOL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG). The exercise consisted …

T(H)Ree Rhizome(S) On 'Close/Open' Encounters With Kinsella's Pastoralism Of The 'Radical' Kind, Klyth Tan Soo-Hong
Theses : Honours
In his elaborative Landbridge 'statement of intent', Western Australian and International poet John Kinsella - whose phenomenal rise since the '90s is now a worldwide literary success story that needs no introduction - asserts a profound interest for the 'pastoral radical' (Kinsella, ed. Kinsella, Landbridge, 1999): “I'm particularly interested in the 'pastoral radical'- in blending the so-called pastoral tradition with the lingui.stically innovative. This 'hybrid' ironises the pastoral construct but allows for genuine movement through rural spaces. Landscape is central to my project - ways of seeing, questions of occupation and space, the position and relevance of the so-called 'lyrical …

Using The Balanced Scorecard As A Management Planning And Control Tool, Teresita T. Nadurata
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The paper attempts to present a detailed explanation of what a balanced scorecard (BSC) is, inclusive of the different BSC models, and its possible uses in different areas or fields of study. These objectives were addressed through documentary analysis. There was much searching for secondary data which were provided by books, journals, lectures, case studies, unpublished theses, and websites. The BSC, which is an integrated set of performance measures derived from company's strategy, has several models, with that of Kaplan's and Norton's as the most popular. The four perspectives in this model are interrelated in the following manner: learning is …

Decision-Making Model And New Services Development Approach In Telecommunications, Alfredo C. Panizales
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The study presents a decision-making model and new services development approach in the telecommunications sector. It affirms that Customer Demand, Foreseeing Business, and Technology are the three most important driving factors in the Philippines and in the Asia Pacific Region. The model posits that new services development, initiated by the Business Group is directly influenced by technology push factors and by top management, engineering, marketing and financial considerations. Government Regulatory Body and Foreign Administrations indirectly influence new services development. The study includes thirty-four (34) senior executives from the telecommunications sector who responded in the 2000 Survey. Thirteen (13) respondents are …
Can Goal Orientations Of Salespeople Predict Performance?, Rustica D. Badillo
Can Goal Orientations Of Salespeople Predict Performance?, Rustica D. Badillo
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The recent work of Sujan, Weitz, and Kumar brings into sharp focus two distinct goal orientations of salespeople: learning and performance. In the article entitled "Learning Orientation, Working Smart, and Effective Selling" (1994), the authors made two primary contributions to salesforce literature. They are: (1) the development and examination of the novel propositions that shed light on how supervisors influence the goal orientations of salespeople, and (2) the examination of whether supervisor's influence on salespeople's orientations is moderated by salesperson experience. The article's hypotheses were tested using data from salespeople in two Fortune 500 companies. The results support several of …
