Facies Configuration Changes And Sediment Transport On The Charlestown/Green Hill Barrier Shoreface, Matt Zitello Jan 2002

Facies Configuration Changes And Sediment Transport On The Charlestown/Green Hill Barrier Shoreface, Matt Zitello

Open Access Master's Theses

Four facies have been previously interpreted and mapped (Boothroyd and Klinger 1998; Klinger 1996; Brenner 1998) on the Charlestown/Green Hill barrier upper shoreface using side-scan sonar surveys obtained in 1995, 1996, and 1997. These include: 1) a sand sheet (Ss) composed of fine to very fine sand, 2) coarse sand covered with small dune bedforms (Csd), 3) cobble pavement (GLc), and 4) glacial boulder outcrop (GLb). These upper shoreface surveys were reinterpreted where necessary and combined with lower shoreface (16-21 m water depth) surveys mapped in the present study. This resulted in the completion of a comprehensive facies map for …

Storm Imact On Shoreline Change: South Shore, Rhode Island, Sarah A. O'Connor Jan 2002

Storm Imact On Shoreline Change: South Shore, Rhode Island, Sarah A. O'Connor

Open Access Master's Theses

This study examines how the South Shore of Rhode Island responds to storms. A storm record for the region was created and storm intensities were determined using the Dolan and Davis Classification system (1992). The study is divided into two sections. The first part determines changes that occur in volume and beach shape with respect to extratropical storms using a 24-year record of weekly beach profiles. The second part looks at the impact of tropical and extratropical storm frequency and intensity on shoreline change using aerial photographs obtained over a 60-year time span.

Part one examines profile response to particular …

Solid Phase Extraction Of Pesticides With Determination By Gas Chromatography, Anwar A. Bhuiyan, Harry O. Brotherton Jan 2002

Solid Phase Extraction Of Pesticides With Determination By Gas Chromatography, Anwar A. Bhuiyan, Harry O. Brotherton

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A simple, rapid, and effective method for the extraction of fifteen organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides based on the use of solid phase Bond Elut C-18 cartridges was studied as an alternative method to those based on extraction with organic solvents. Solid phase extraction is an attractive chromatographic sample preparation technology that reduces analysis time, costs, labor, and solvent consumption relative to traditional liquid/liquid extraction methods. The sample recoveries with the use of solid phase extractions were excellent for most pesticides. Analyte concentration by a factor as great as 1000-fold was achieved readily. The adsorbed pesticides were eluted from the solid …

Bedrock Geology Of West Fork Quadrangle, Washington County, Arkansas, Jack T. King, Maria E. King, Stephen K. Boss

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A digital geologic map of West Fork quadrangle was produced at 1:24,000 scale using the geographic information system (GIS) software Maplnfo. Data regarding stratigraphic relations observed in the field were digitized onto the United States Geological Survey (USGS) digital raster graphic (DRG) of West Fork quadrangle. The geology of West Fork quadrangle consists of sedimentary rocks of the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian systems. The Fayetteville Shale and Pitkin Formation represent the Mississippian system. The Hale, Bloyd, and Atoka Formations represent the Pennsylvanian System. Each of these formations consists of members that were mapped at 1:24,000 scale, and this mapping effort represents …

Societal Response To Developmental Differences And Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes, Randall R. Osborne Jan 2002

Societal Response To Developmental Differences And Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes, Randall R. Osborne

McNair Scholars Journal

Recent findings indicate an increased concern that conventional substance abuse treatment models consistently reflect less than satisfactory outcomes when applied to adolescents. This study investigates developmental differences among adolescents and adults as a possible cause of the disparity. The author conducted interviews with substance abuse professionals, developmental psychologists, adolescents in treatment, and adolescents no less than six months out of treatment. Questions focus on assessment agendas, developmental and motivational differences among adolescents and adults, movement along the addiction continuum, developmental tasks of adolescence, and adolescent receptivity. The results of the interviews among each group are compared and consistencies are noted. …

Drowning The Constraints Of Freedom: Schopenhauer’S Freedom Of The Will In Kate Chopin’S The Awakening, Bobbie Ann Rekis Jan 2002

Drowning The Constraints Of Freedom: Schopenhauer’S Freedom Of The Will In Kate Chopin’S The Awakening, Bobbie Ann Rekis

McNair Scholars Journal

Although the overarching metaphor of The Awakening is the sea, it cannot be said that Edna’s victory lies in her death by drowning; instead, it lies in what she has made of her life. The novel tracks the evolution of her will. The will is the element of human nature that German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer calls the “thing-initself,” that which strives successfully against those constraints imposed by society. Edna desires to break through the chains of convention and constraint as she moves toward new freedoms—physical, intellectual, and moral. Edna’s victory lies within her ungrounded will, which in turn, wills itself …

International Bounty Hunter Ride-Along, Ryan M. Porcello Jan 2002

International Bounty Hunter Ride-Along, Ryan M. Porcello

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Note explores the international implications of a plan proposed by two bounty hunters in the Tacoma, Washington area to charge U.K. thrill seekers to accompany them on manhunts in the United States. Part H explains the differences in Colonial American society that resulted in the early development of a commercial bail bond system to replace the English personal surety system. Part III examines the contractual relationship between a bail bondsman and a defendant, as well as the agency relationship between a bail bondsman and a bounty hunter, to show why bounty hunters have such unbridled power to arrest fugitives. …

Mechanism For Membrane Electroporation Irreversibility Under High-Intensity, Ultrashort Electrical Pulse Conditions, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach Jan 2002

Mechanism For Membrane Electroporation Irreversibility Under High-Intensity, Ultrashort Electrical Pulse Conditions, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

An improved electroporation model is used to address membrane irreversibility under ultrashort electric pulse conditions. It is shown that membranes can survive a strong electric pulse and recover provided the pore distribution has a relatively large spread. If, however, the population consists predominantly of larger radii pores, then irreversibility can result. Physically, such a distribution could arise if pores at adjacent sites coalesce. The requirement of close proximity among the pore sites is more easily satisfied in smaller organelles than in outer cell membranes. Model predictions are in keeping with recent observations of cell damage to intracellular organelles (e.g., mitochondria), …

An Essay On The Tort Of Negligent Infliction Of Emotion Distress In Texas: Stop Saying It Does Not Exist., Charles E. Cantu Jan 2002

An Essay On The Tort Of Negligent Infliction Of Emotion Distress In Texas: Stop Saying It Does Not Exist., Charles E. Cantu

St. Mary's Law Journal

The injury of emotional distress is an interesting tort, which has long perplexed the Anglo-American system of jurisprudence. While, originally, allegations of this kind did not constitute a cause of action, today, there is no question that an injured plaintiff may recover for the infliction of emotional distress. The majority and minority positions differ now only on what must be alleged and proved. Texas was the first jurisdiction in the United States to allow recovery for mental anguish. However, in 1993 in the case of Boyles v. Kerr, the Texas Supreme Court appeared to depart from the majority view when …

Shoot Out At The Not-O.K. Corral Or Privileged Client Communications - Lost And Found In Texas., Walter W. Steele Jr.

St. Mary's Law Journal

Texas’s solutions to inadvertently disclosed privileged material are unworkable. Confidentiality of client information is a bedrock of the legal profession. Nonetheless, some confidential information invariably leaks out. The most common leak occurs when a lawyer inadvertently includes privileged material in boxes of documents produced in response to a legitimate discovery request. After the opposing lawyer finds the “hot documents” in the box, the problems begin. The Texas Supreme Court adopted what amounts to the reasonable precautions test in Granada Corp. v. First Court of Appeals. The cornerstone of the Granada holding is the involuntary nature of the production of the …

Why The Injection Of Race In Saldano V. State Constitutes Fundamental Error, Diana L. Hoermann Jan 2002

Why The Injection Of Race In Saldano V. State Constitutes Fundamental Error, Diana L. Hoermann

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

This article examines the historical use of a person’s race in the legal system, more specifically in criminal cases. Race should not determine the quality of justice an individual receives. An enlightened criminal justice system would not allow race to determine a person’s fate. However, the Texas criminal justice system allows the consideration of a person’s race in determining whether that person should receive the death penalty. In Victor Hugo Saldano v. The State of Texas, an unpublished opinion, the Texas Criminal Court of Appeals upheld the imposition of the death penalty where the jury heard an expert witness claim …

Hand Transmitted Vibration In A Simulated Industrial Task: A Psychophysical Evaluation., Sergio Augusto Caporali Filho Jan 2002

Hand Transmitted Vibration In A Simulated Industrial Task: A Psychophysical Evaluation., Sergio Augusto Caporali Filho

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Continued occupational exposure to hand transmitted vibration (HTV) has been related to a series of disorders, which have been collectively defined as the hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Based on existing knowledge, the International Standard Organization has developed a standard for the measurement, evaluation and assessment of HTV, which documents the measurement and reporting methodology, the dose-response relationship, and the weighing filter for the assessment of HTV. Some researchers have emphasized the need for the development of improved weighing functions and dose-response relationships, for which it is vital to undertake further systematic investigations in order to enhance our understanding of HAVS, …
