Sea Surface Salinity Measurements In The Historical Database, Frederick M. Bingham, Stephan D. Howden, Chester J. Koblinsky Dec 2002

Sea Surface Salinity Measurements In The Historical Database, Frederick M. Bingham, Stephan D. Howden, Chester J. Koblinsky

Faculty Publications

We have examined historical distributions of sea surface salinity (SSS) observations in a data set consisting of a combination of the World Ocean Database 1998 (WOD98) and a thermosalinograph and bucket salinity database collected from volunteer observing ships. It is well known that SSS in much of the world's ocean is measured infrequently or not at all. We find that 27% of one-degree squares in the world ocean (open and coastal, excluding the Arctic Ocean) had no observations of SSS in the historical database, and 70% had 10 or fewer. Systematic sampling of SSS (more than 10,000 observations per year …

Translated Opinions

Facts: In the context of IDF operations against the terrorist infrastructure in areas of the Palestinian Authority (“Operation Defensive Wall”), thousands of suspects were detained. Due to overcrowding, some of these petitioners were transferred to the Kziot detention facility in the Negev region. Most of the detainees were detained pursuant to administrative detention orders. This petition concerns the detention conditions of these detainees.

Held: The Supreme Court held that the presumption of innocence should be applied to the detainees, as they are being held under administrative detention orders, and have neither been tried nor convicted. The Court further held that …

Migrant Worker Dies In Tractor Rollover, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Fatality Case Reports--Tractors/Logging

On September 13, 2002, a 26 year-old male Hispanic migrant worker (decedent) died when the tractor he was driving on a country roadway overturned. The decedent had experience driving the tractor in a field, but did not have experience driving it on a public roadway. On the afternoon of the incident, the decedent drove the tractor, pulling a wagonload of tobacco, from the farm where it had been harvested to the tobacco barn one mile away. The road was hilly and had a sharp curve to the right at the bottom of the hill. As the decedent drove the tractor …

Canenermiut Lifeways And Worldview And Western Fish And Wildlife Management, Carl T. Jack Dec 2002

Canenermiut Lifeways And Worldview And Western Fish And Wildlife Management, Carl T. Jack

Rural Development

The Canenermiut inter-generational worldview embodies the proper use and conservation of the resources necessary to sustain life from time immemorial. The classical Yupiaq conservation ethics in the utilization of subsistence resources are well established and practiced to this day by Canenermiut that is geared to the survival of their culture and community. When western fish and wildlife managers promulgate regulations from urban areas of Alaska on the taking of subsistence resources in rural Alaska they often find out that rural residents such as the Canenermiut ... are unwilling to follow the regulations. Caneneq is a coastal area between Kusquqvak (Kuskokwim) …

Cultural And Linguistic Sensitivity In Assessment Tools: An Adaptation Of The Drinkers Inventory Of Consequences For Alaska Natives, Tony Cantil

Psychology

The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of a new assessment tool for Alaska Native clients with alcoholism. A sample of 23 Yup'ik clients at a regional treatment center were interviewed using the Drinker Inventory of Consequences for Alaska Natives (DrInC-AN), an adaption of the Drinker Inventory of Consequence (DrInC), the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Yup'ik Cultural Practices and Traditions (YCPT). These clients were selected, on a voluntary basis during the intake interview to the treatment center. Historically, assessment tools in alcoholism have not been culturally or linguistically sensitive to Alaska Native and …

Excitation Of The Ionized Nitrogen Molecule In The Aurora, Kim Nielsen Dec 2002

Excitation Of The Ionized Nitrogen Molecule In The Aurora, Kim Nielsen

Physics

An understanding of the excitation mechanism of the ionospheric molecules during auroral activity is of vital importance for the overall ionospheric understanding including its interaction with the magnetosphere. In this thesis we study two emissions originating from the excited nitrogen molecule ion. The first negative (0,1) emission at 4278 Å originating from the B state, and Meinel (2,0) emission at 7852 Å originating from the A state during moderate to strong aurora have been observed with an imaging spectrograph at Poker Flat, Alaska. The B state has a short lifetime compared to the inverse collision frequency at auroral altitudes, while …

Determining The Impacts Of Storage Practice And Treatment Technology On The Formation Of Disinfection Byproducts, Greta Myerchin Mcgee Dec 2002

Determining The Impacts Of Storage Practice And Treatment Technology On The Formation Of Disinfection Byproducts, Greta Myerchin Mcgee

Theses (Unassigned)

Disinfection byproducts (DBP) are formed during the reaction of chemical disinfectants with natural organic material (NOM). DBPs are potential carcinogens and are regulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEP A) under the Disinfectant/DBP (D/DBP) rule. High concentrations of NOM in drinking water sources used by Alaska's communities often result in the formation of DBPs during treatment. Since surface water sources in the Arctic are frozen for 6-9 months of the year, communities are often forced to store raw water for treatment during the winter or treat and store enough drinking water during the summer to last through the winter. …

People's Experiences Of Gossiping: A Narrative Analysis, Dina V. Nekrassova Dec 2002

People's Experiences Of Gossiping: A Narrative Analysis, Dina V. Nekrassova

Communication

This study employs narrative methodology to develop an understanding of meanings people make of their gossiping experiences. Four theoretical approaches are identified in the review of literature: functionalistic approach, gossip as information management, and gossip as a social form of discreet indiscretion which extended as a basis for examining gossiping as a communication experience. Four themes emerged from six narrative interviews, regarding the co-researchers' interpretations of their gossiping experiences: secrecy as a gossiping experience, gossiping as a negative experience, gossiping as a positive experience, and gossiping as being connected. The equivocal nature of gossiping stems from the participants' engagement in …

Communication Apprehension: A Narrative Analysis Of The Prca-24, Karri C. Vandeventer Dec 2002

Communication Apprehension: A Narrative Analysis Of The Prca-24, Karri C. Vandeventer

Communication

This exploratory study examined individuals' lived experience with communication apprehension (CA). CA has been explored extensively over the past 35 years by researchers seeking psychological explanations for communication phenomenon and employing the premise that CA exists as a "trait-like" characteristic of personality or as a relatively permanent behavioral disposition. Grounded in a constructionist epistemology, this study presumes that meaning is created, maintained, and transformed through communication with others. From this perspective, CA is an individual's evaluation of anticipated or occurring communication events, based upon his/her prior experiences interacting with others in specific situations. Though CA researchers acknowledge this situational basis …

Predicting Contaminant Transport Pathways In The Caribou-Poker Creek Research Watershed, Vincent Autier Dec 2002

Predicting Contaminant Transport Pathways In The Caribou-Poker Creek Research Watershed, Vincent Autier

Theses (Unassigned)

In order to evaluate the impact of natural organic matter (NOM) on drinking water, the hydrology of the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed (CPCRW) was considered. The CPCRW provided an excellent opportunity to investigate contaminant transport as it relates to hydrology in a well studied, discontinuous permafrost environment. The seasonal variation of organic chemistry of three different water sources (i.e. ground water, artesian spring and stream) was studied during the course of the year 2001. This thesis comprises three chapters, each of which seeks to gain a better understanding of the contaminant transport pathways in a boreal watershed, Caribou Poker Creeks …

Comparing The Nutritional Quality Of Steller Sea Lion (Eumetopias Jubatus) Diets, Monica Kaho Bando Dec 2002

Comparing The Nutritional Quality Of Steller Sea Lion (Eumetopias Jubatus) Diets, Monica Kaho Bando

Marine Biology

Though the primary cause(s) of the Steller sea lion decline remains unknown, one hypothesis is nutritional stress, possibly the result of climatic regime shifts reducing prey availability and/or quality. Researchers at the Alaska SeaLife Center formulated three feeding regimes representative of Steller sea lion diets: prior to and during their population decline and from a stable population. The purpose of this project was to compare the nutritional quality of these diets using proximate composition and bomb calorimetry. The pre-decline and stable diets are composed of more high-fat prey, like herring, with resulting energy densities being significantly higher than the decline …

Development Of High Spectral Resolution Iron Boltzmann Lidar, Tao Hou Dec 2002

Development Of High Spectral Resolution Iron Boltzmann Lidar, Tao Hou

Engineering

An initial iron (Fe) Boltzmann lidar was developed in winter 2000-2001 at Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR). This resonance lidar system supported Fe concentration measurements. An initial Fe Boltzmann temperature measurement was made in December 2000. This initial system was fundamentally limited by the 1 pm tuning resolution of the laser. During the winter of 2001-2002, a control system was developed to increase the resolution of the laser tuning to 0.09 pm. Fe cooncentration and Fe Boltzmann temperature measurements were made and an experimental analysis of the measurements was developed. This thesis presents lidar observations of the mesospheric Fe layer …

Growth, Foraging Behavior And Distribution Of Age-0 Arctic Grayling In An Alaskan Stream, Cheryl Ann Dion Dec 2002

Growth, Foraging Behavior And Distribution Of Age-0 Arctic Grayling In An Alaskan Stream, Cheryl Ann Dion

Fisheries

I evaluated the ability of three models to relate habitat characteristics to habitat quality for age-0 Arctic grayling Thymallullus arcticus in an Alaska stream. A temperature-based growth model made accurate predictions, showing it can reliably assess thermal habitat quality. Deviations between predicted and observed growth were useful because they identified the timing of possible critical periods, when competition for food or space may cause density-dependent mortality and emigration. A foraging model consistently overestimated the mean prey size of fish, showing that such models need further work before then can accurately assess food availability from invertebrate drift. A habitat selection model …

The Ecology Of Eulachon (Thaleichthys Pacificus) In Twentymile River, Alaska, Elizabeth Ann Spangler Dec 2002

The Ecology Of Eulachon (Thaleichthys Pacificus) In Twentymile River, Alaska, Elizabeth Ann Spangler

Fisheries

The ecology of eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus) was studied at Twentymile River, a tributory of Turnagain Arm located in southcentral Alaska. In 2000 and 2001, we investigated the environmental factors associated with the migration of adult eulachon and downstream drift of larval eulachon. We assessed run timing, freshwater duration, length, weight, age, presence or absence of teeth, fecundity, and gear selectivity for dip and gill nets. Catch per unit effort of migrating adult fish were correlated with water temperature, tide height, river discharge, light intensity, and the density of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). Water temperature, river discharge, tide height, and light …

Spawning Habitat Characteristics Of Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasii) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Brandee Lynn Gerke Dec 2002

Spawning Habitat Characteristics Of Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasii) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Brandee Lynn Gerke

Fisheries

Spawning habitats of Pacific herring in Prince William Sound, Alaska were analyzed to determine the importance of habitat features including vegetation type, percent vegetative cover, substrate type, water depth, and shoreline slope in the importance of herring spawning ground selection. Sidescan sonar data were used to compare bottom habitat characteristics of herring spawning areas vs. non-spawn areas. No significant differences in vegetation or substrate type were detected between areas where herring do and do not spawn. Generalized linear models and analysis of variance models were constructed to predict the probability of herring spawn and estimate egg densities given habitat information …
