Switching Decisions For Diversity Antennas Using Autoregressive Techniques, Sebastian Mani Puthenpurayil
Switching Decisions For Diversity Antennas Using Autoregressive Techniques, Sebastian Mani Puthenpurayil
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Decision-making on switching for diversity antennas has been given considerable attention in recent times in mobile radio communications. Due to multipath propagation of radio waves the signals undergo a phenomenon known as fading and there will be considerable reduction in the average signal strength. By having multiple antennas in the receiver or transmitter the signal strength can be improved by switching back and forth to the antenna that has the maximum signal strength. In this thesis we have used linear prediction method for making decisions on which antenna gives the maximum signal strength. Linear prediction is applied on a single …
Growth Equilibrium Modeling Of Urban Sprawl On Agricultural Lands In West Virginia, Yohannes G. Hailu
Growth Equilibrium Modeling Of Urban Sprawl On Agricultural Lands In West Virginia, Yohannes G. Hailu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
With dynamic economic and social changes, increasing pressure is exerted on natural resources management. Agricultural land resources particularly face growing pressure of conversion to non-agricultural uses from population and development demands for land. The continual conversion of agricultural land may have implications in terms of the loss of prime farmland, irreversible landscape changes, deteriorating environmental quality, and interference with rural lifestyles. This study models urban sprawl on agricultural land in a growth equilibrium modeling approach where the population-employment simultaneous equations system is estimated using two-stages-least-squares while changes in agricultural land is estimated using OLS on West Virginia data. Results of …

Thermodynamic Effects Of Phospholamban On Ca-Atpase Kinetics, Patrick L. Apopa
Thermodynamic Effects Of Phospholamban On Ca-Atpase Kinetics, Patrick L. Apopa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Ca-ATPase of sarcoplasmic reticulum removes cytosolic calcium to promote muscle relaxation. In the heart, the Ca-ATPase is regulated by phospholamban, which inhibits the Ca-ATPase by decreasing Ca-ATPase calcium sensitivity. However, the kinetic and thermodynamic mechanisms of inhibition are not understood. The purpose of this research was to test the hypothesis that phospholamban regulates Ca-ATPase kinetics by increasing Ca-ATPase activation energy. The baculovirus-insect cell expression system was used to produce samples containing Ca-ATPase alone or Ca-ATPase with phospholamban. The temperature-dependence of Ca-ATPase activity and catalytic site density was measured in the absence and presence of phospholamban at sub-saturating calcium and …

Application Evaluation Of A Prototype Backscatter Imaging Ldv System (Bils), Preetanshu Pandey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study focuses on the application evaluation of a prototype backscatter imaging LDV system (BILS). This non-intrusive instrument has the ability to record particle images and two-dimensional velocity data simultaneously. A series of validation tests were conducted to verify the operation of the system. These included comparing the velocity of a wire, attached to a rotating disc, with known angular frequency (measured by digistrobe), with that measured by the instrument. The results were found to be in good agreement. The imaging part of BILS was calibrated using a target with known dimensions.;The terminal velocities and particle sizes of near-spherical, Nu-pareil …
Students' Perceptions Of Nonnative Esl Teachers, Etelvo Ramos Filho
Students' Perceptions Of Nonnative Esl Teachers, Etelvo Ramos Filho
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There has been a lot of research on native speaker and nonnative speaker teachers of English as a second language. Authors have addressed negative and positive aspects of these two classes. However, there has not been much research on how students of English as a second language see their nonnative instructors. This qualitative study addresses this issue. In this study I investigated how learners perceive their nonnative speaker teachers. The data were collected through a questionnaire, class observations, and audio-taped interviews with the 16 participants. Two nonnative instructors, who taught the participants, were interviewed also. Overall, despite some negative perceptions, …

The focus of this thesis is to implement Thai handwriting recognition system. A preliminary data set of Thai handwriting in legal amounts is designed. The samples in the data set are characters and words of the Thai legal amounts and a set of legal amounts phrases collected from a number of native Thai volunteers. At the preprocessing and recognition process, techniques are introduced to improve the characters recognition rates. The characters are divided into two smaller subgroups by their writing …
Effects Of Response-Independent Stimulus Delivery And Functional Communication Training, Shannon S. Haag
Effects Of Response-Independent Stimulus Delivery And Functional Communication Training, Shannon S. Haag
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Two individuals with developmental delays with a history of problem behavior participated in this study. Its purpose was to examine the efficacy of combining two treatments demonstrated to reduce problem behavior: response-independent stimulus delivery and differential reinforcement of an alternative behavior. This study examined whether the response-independent delivery of an alternative preferred stimulus and differential reinforcement of manding resulted in increases in manding and suppression of problem behavior prior to and during the fading of the schedule of response-independent stimulus delivery. The study also examined the necessity of extinction to obtain suppression of problem behavior. The response-independent delivery of an …
Early Component-Based Reliability Assessment Using Uml Based Software Models, William Black Smith V
Early Component-Based Reliability Assessment Using Uml Based Software Models, William Black Smith V
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the last decade, software has grown in complexity and size, while development timelines have diminished. As a result, component-based software engineering is becoming routine. Component-based software reliability assessment combines the architecture of the system with the reliability of the components to obtain the system reliability. This allows developers to produce a reliable system and testers to focus on the vulnerable areas.;This thesis discusses a tool developed to implement the methodology previously created for early reliability assessment of component-based systems. The tool, Early Component-based Reliability Assessment (ECRA), uses Rational Rose Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams to predict the reliability of …

Homophobia And Academic Freedom, David Moshman
Homophobia And Academic Freedom, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Addressing homophobia and heterosexism as a teacher raises issues of respect for the intellectual freedom of your students. The central thesis of this article is that these issues are best addressed on the basis of general principles of academic freedom-that is, intellectual freedom in educational and research contexts. Three cases are analyzed on the basis of principles developed by the Academic Freedom Coalition of Nebraska (AFCON). These principles permit advocacy, rather than requiring neutrality, but do not permit indoctrination. That is, instructors may express and justify their own ideas relevant to the curriculum and try to convince students to adopt …

Flouting The Law: Does Perceived Injustice Provoke General Non-Compliance?, Janice Nadler
Flouting The Law: Does Perceived Injustice Provoke General Non-Compliance?, Janice Nadler
Law and Economics Papers
What happens when people's common sense view of justice diverges from the sense of justice they see enshrined in particular legal rules and legal outcomes? In particular, does the perception of one particular law as unjust make people less likely to comply with unrelated laws? This article reports an experiment that empirically tested the Flouting Thesis - the idea that the perceived justice of one law can influence the intention to comply with unrelated laws. Participants who were exposed to laws they perceived as unjust were more willing, as a general matter, to flout unrelated laws, compared to participants exposed …
