Recent Developments In Copyright Law: Technology And International Trade Play Starring Roles, Mary Lafrance
Scholarly Works
The once staid field of copyright law has undergone a dramatic revolution in recent years, as new technologies and international trade pressures have spurred legislative change, while challenging the federal courts to find answers to those questions that Congress has not resolved or, in some cases, to questions that recent acts of Congress have created. This article explores recent developments in copyright law in 2002.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (Icsi) In Fishes, German Antonio Poleo
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (Icsi) In Fishes, German Antonio Poleo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Sperm from zebrafish, Danio rerio, and Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were microinjected directly into egg cytoplasm to evaluate the potential for developing a novel method of fertilization. In zebrafish, the sperm of two lines (wild-type and gold, long-fin) were injected with or without activation into activated and non-activated eggs. No significant difference (P = 0.997) in fertilization by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) was observed between the two lines or when the sperm were activated or not (P = 0.057). There was significance difference in fertilization between activated and non-activated eggs (P = 0.010). The highest fertilization rate was achieved by …
The Development And Validation Of The Parent Instruction-Giving Game With Youngsters (Piggy) In A Head Start Population, Stephen Danial Anthony Hupp
The Development And Validation Of The Parent Instruction-Giving Game With Youngsters (Piggy) In A Head Start Population, Stephen Danial Anthony Hupp
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Head Start families demonstrate many of the risk factors that relate to the development of noncompliance and other behavior problems in young children, such as low income, limited education, teenage pregnancy, isolation, family stress, single parenthood, and parental psychopathology. Noncompliant preschool-aged children often continue to display difficulties through adolescence. Parent Management Training programs have been developed which can improve child compliance. However, many of the same risk factors that lead to child noncompliance also reduce the effectiveness of parenting interventions. Thus, more efficient assessment and intervention strategies need to be developed to facilitate the treatment of child behavior problems in …
Effects Of Feeding Strategies On Growth Of Florida Pompano (Trachinotus Carolinus) In Closed Recirculating Systems, Derek R. Groat
Effects Of Feeding Strategies On Growth Of Florida Pompano (Trachinotus Carolinus) In Closed Recirculating Systems, Derek R. Groat
LSU Master's Theses
Due to its high market value, Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) has long been regarded as a promising species for aquaculture. Although pompano exhibit several favorable traits for culture, previous studies have indicated that fish larger than 200 g exhibit poor growth. This study was conducted to determine the effects of different feeding strategies on production characteristics of pompano raised in closed recirculating systems. Results of Experiment 1 indicated that mean weight of fish (initial mean weight, 17 g) fed a fixed ration at two and six feedings per day was greater than that of fish fed only once per day. …
Perception Of And Reactions To The Presence Of Url's In Print Advertising Of A Non-Technology Brand, Neil Melancon
Perception Of And Reactions To The Presence Of Url's In Print Advertising Of A Non-Technology Brand, Neil Melancon
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis, through an experiment of 108 subjects, studies the relationship between the presence of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL or web address) in newspaper advertisements and perception of the product advertised as well as the likelihood to act on the advertisement. The findings reveal URLs do in fact have an effect on perception, although, as it is suggested in the theoretical framework, it does not necessarily induce the subjects to act on the ad. This study also finds there is a stronger inclination for perception change to take place versus the likelihood for consumers to either seek more information …
Pleasure Principles: The Social Construction Of Gambling And Sex Addiction Treatment, M. Kelly James
Pleasure Principles: The Social Construction Of Gambling And Sex Addiction Treatment, M. Kelly James
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The transformation of behavior into deviance requires many players, individuals, and institutions invested in the social construction process and its outcomes. Although considered private recreational matters by some, gambling and having sex are gaining spotlight in the addiction arena. With the growing availability of casino entertainment, lotteries, OTB venues, prostitution, internet pornography, and 900 numbers, gambling and sex are interpreted, labeled, and treated by addiction recovery specialists. Using ethnographic methods and face-to-face interviews, I explore a southern community’s institutions and practitioners providing services to gambling and sex addicts. I examine the community’s discourse and its methods for defining and controlling …

Constructing Womanhood In Public: Progressive White Women In A New South, Mary Jane Smith
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
During the Progressive Era, southern white women were aggressively recruited by the leadership of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Each believed the inclusion of southern white women vital to its success as a national association of American women; consequently, by the beginning of the twentieth century, southern white women had achieved positions of leadership in each organization. This dissertation analyzes, primarily through the public statements of the leaders of these groups, how these women defined themselves as women, as white, and as southern vis a vis their …
Evaluation Of Feeding Chlamydospores Of Duddingtonia Flagrans To Ewe/Lamb Pairs And Weaned Lambs To Biologically Control Levels Of Haemonchus On Pasture, Natalee Peart
LSU Master's Theses
Gastroenteritis caused by the nematode parasite Haemonchus contortus is a serious concern for small ruminants in the tropics and subtropics. Control is traditionally by anthelmintics and pasture management, however this specific nematode parasite has become resistant to many anthelmintics and research is now focused on novel control methods including biological control using the nematode-trapping fungus, Duddingtonia flagrans. The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of feeding chlamydospores of the fungus at a dosage of 5 x 105 spores/kg of BW to ewe/lamb pairs (Trial 1) and weaned lambs (Trial 2) for a total of 17 and 8 …

Nutrient Reserves Of Lesser Scaup During Spring Migration In The Mississippi Flyway: A Test Of The Spring Condition Hypothesis, Michael J. Anteau
Nutrient Reserves Of Lesser Scaup During Spring Migration In The Mississippi Flyway: A Test Of The Spring Condition Hypothesis, Michael J. Anteau
LSU Master's Theses
The continental scaup population (lesser [Aythya affinis] and greater scaup [A. marila] combined) has declined markedly during the past 20 years, and has remained below the population goal of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan since 1985. One hypothesis explaining the scaup population decline states that reproductive success has decreased because females presently are arriving on breeding areas in poorer condition than that historically (Spring Condition Hypothesis [SCH]). I tested the SCH by comparing fresh body masses (FBMs) and nutrient reserves (lipid, protein, and mineral) of lesser scaup at 4 locations (Louisiana, Illinois, Minnesota, and Manitoba) in the Mississippi Flyway …

Three-Dimensional Micromachined On-Chip Inductors For High Frequency Applications, Nimit Chomnawang
Three-Dimensional Micromachined On-Chip Inductors For High Frequency Applications, Nimit Chomnawang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Demands for wireless communication are ever-escalating for consumer and military communication applications. The requirements of portability, more functionality and lower cost have been driving forces toward smaller, more sophisticated and flexible wireless devices with lower power consumption. To meet these requirements, monolithically integrated passive inductors with high Q-factors and high self-resonant frequencies are desirable. Q-factor and self-resonant frequency of an inductor are significantly degraded at high frequencies due to conductor ohmic loss, magnetically induced eddy current in the conductive substrate, and lower self-resonant frequency from capacitance between conductive substrate and conductors.
In this dissertation, novel three-dimensional arch-like solenoid and dome-shaped …
Use Of Actigraphy To Objectively Measure Motor Restlessness In Restless Legs Syndrome, Tai Anderson Istre
Use Of Actigraphy To Objectively Measure Motor Restlessness In Restless Legs Syndrome, Tai Anderson Istre
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a disorder characterized by disagreeable leg sensations, usually prior to sleep onset, which cause an almost irresistible urge to move the legs. A characteristic feature of this disorder is that the movements are partially or completely relieved with leg motions. Attempts to find the underlying pathology have been unsuccessful. Thus, there are no objective physiological tests to diagnose this condition. Using the Suggested Immobilization Test (SIT), the current study attempted to validate a new and practical method for quantifying the motor symptoms of RLS, actigraphy. To this end, the SIT with actigraphy was evaluated for …

Building Community: An Environmental Approach To Crime Prevention, Gustavo A. Barreto
Building Community: An Environmental Approach To Crime Prevention, Gustavo A. Barreto
LSU Master's Theses
Crime cannot be understood as a single-solution problem. Participation of the community is important to complement and make more efficient any program of crime control by police authorities or any other law enforcement agency. This thesis is intended to create consciousness among designers of the urban environment of their social role. Cities must include places to promote community interaction and formation of social bonds. As social bonds among residents increase, and bonds with the place begin building a sense of territoriality in the community, the residents become active defenders of the place against crime. A theory summary presents different and …

Narrative Patterns Of Racism And Resistance In The Work Of William Faulkner, Janet Elizabeth Barnwell
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Keeping in mind the complicated nature of race relations in the South during the segregation era, as well as the economic volatility of the time, and recognizing Faulkner's position as a white southern writer, this dissertation poses and attempts to answer a few specific questions regarding Faulkner's work. First, beginning with New Orleans Sketches and ending with Go Down, Moses, what texts seem most devoted to examining issues of race difference? Second, where in these texts does Faulkner most strikingly incorporate and then challenge racial stereotypes and cliches about the South? Third, working chronologically, how did Faulkner reconcile his position …

Pot-Au-Feu Japan: Foods And Weddings, Satomi Fukutomi
Pot-Au-Feu Japan: Foods And Weddings, Satomi Fukutomi
LSU Master's Theses
As Japan underwent rapid modernization and economic expansion after World War II, its cultural complex transformed into a postmodern mingling of Western and Eastern cultures, merging modern and antiquated tradition (Heine 1995:29). The Japanese have absorbed many Western traditions without immigrating, or living outside of their own (Eastern) society; Japanese marriage rituals exhibit such Eastern and Western cultural minglings. Wedding receptions, regarded as mini-drama, contain traditions of old—material taboos, inedible wedding cakes, beer ceremony, the importance of the color white, as well as blended traditional-modern acts such as toasting champagne while wearing a kimono, and gift-giving rituals incorporating famous American …

Constitutional Issues In Information Privacy, Fred H. Cate, Robert E. Litan
Articles by Maurer Faculty
The U.S. Constitution has been largely ignored in the recent flurry of privacy laws and regulations designed to protect personal information from incursion by the private sector, despite the fact that many of these enactments and efforts to enforce them significantly implicate the First Amendment. Questions about the role of the Constitution have assumed new importance in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Efforts to identify and bring to justice the perpetrators and to protect against future terrorist attacks, while threatening to weaken constitutional protections against government intrusions into personal …

Experience-Based Language Acquisition: A Computational Model Of Human Language Acquisition, Brian Edward Pangburn
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Almost from the very beginning of the digital age, people have sought better ways to communicate with computers. This research investigates how computers might be enabled to understand natural language in a more humanlike way. Based, in part, on cognitive development in infants, we introduce an open computational framework for visual perception and grounded language acquisition called Experience-Based Language Acquisition (EBLA). EBLA can “watch” a series of short videos and acquire a simple language of nouns and verbs corresponding to the objects and object-object relations in those videos. Upon acquiring this protolanguage, EBLA can perform basic scene analysis to generate …

Explaining The Explanation: Byron's Notes To Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Cristina M. Caminita
Explaining The Explanation: Byron's Notes To Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Cristina M. Caminita
LSU Master's Theses
In this thesis, I show that Lord Byron's notes to Childe Harold's Pilgrimage are an integral part of the poem itself, not to be read as added material, but to be read as material that comments upon and deconstructs the poem. I examine the first two cantos of the poem, reading the notes as Byron's own answers and questions to the stylistic and political ramifications of the romance verse. By scrutinizing Byron's use of the romantic hero, the romance verse, the romantic quest and the text of romance for his reading public, I show Byron's own subversion and questioning of …

Social Exchange And Customer Service: The Relationship Between Perceived Organizational Support, Leader-Member Exchange, And Customer Service Behavior, Lisa Michelle Polly
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As the economy continues to shift from the production of goods to the delivery of services, one way in which an organization might set itself apart from its competition is through the delivery of high quality customer service. Therefore, a critical question for organizations becomes how to elicit the appropriate level of service from its employees. The purpose of the current study was to propose and test a social exchange based model of customer service. Specifically, it was suggested that the quality of the organization-service employee and manager-service employee relationships would be related to employee customer service behavior through their …
