Assessement Of Kairomones As A Monitoring Tool For Cotesia Flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Esther Ndumi Ngumbi
All Master’s Theses
Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) is a major pest of maize in East Africa. Its indigenous natural enemies are unable to regulate its densities to a level acceptable to farmers. Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a larval parasitoid of C. partellus now established in Kenya, was released in 1993 from Pakistan for the control of this pest. A major constraint in evaluating the establishment of C. flavipes, is the great amount of time spent for its field collection and identification. Use of traps may facilitate the assessment of the establishment and spread of this parasitoid. A number of chemical compounds released by …

Computer crime investigation is a multidisciplinary profession and almost no one today has been trained purely as a computer forensic analyst. Toward that end, investigators need professional reference guides and texts that cover the major points of computer forensics. In this article, we discuss some broad issues related to forensic computing and include a review of four texts on the subject:
- Computer Forensics: Incident Response Essentials, Warren G. Kruse II & Jay G. Heiser
- Computer Forensics & Privacy, Michael Caloyannides
- Cyber Forensics: A Field Manual for Collecting, Examining, and Preserving Evidence of Computer Crimes, edited by Albert J. …

Theses and Dissertations
Study in fields such as distributed artificial intelligence (DAI), decentralized artificial intelligence (DzAI), parallel artificial intelligence (PAl), multiagent systems (MAS), computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), artificial life (AL), and complex adaptive systems (CAS) is concerned with the cooperation, coordination, communication, and coherence of multiple agents working together to achieve a common goal. The notion that the ability of a collective can exceed the sum of the individuals is a fundamental concept and a generally accepted truth. However, no general theoretical explanation exists as to why this could or should be the case. This dissertation explores such an explanation by considering …

The Economic Role Of West Virginia's Food Systems In A Globalized Economic Environment., Sangnyeol Jung
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The structure of West Virginia’s food systems is analyzed within the context of a changing structure of the U.S. and global food systems. Further, the economic role of food systems in West Virginia is investigated both at the state and an industry level using a combination of a descriptive analysis and an impact analysis. ARCVIEW is used for mapping in the descriptive analysis. The impact analysis is done using an input-output model. The descriptive analysis by itself cannot be used to draw definitive conclusions regarding the role of West Virginia’s food systems; thus, in addition to the descriptive analysis, an …

It has been 12 years since the passing of the Hate Crimes Statistics Act. Since that time much has been written about it. However, not many useful applications have been developed using the data that is collected. The author goes about identifying important discoveries made since 1990 about the nature of reporting hate crimes. The author also identifies problems with the reporting of hate crimes. By using a combination of the data from Hate Crime Statistics collected under the Uniform Crime Reports and data from the Sample Survey of Law Enforcement Agencies, the author hopes to be able to identify …

Regulating Political Parties Under A Public Rights First Amendment, Gregory P. Magarian
Regulating Political Parties Under A Public Rights First Amendment, Gregory P. Magarian
Scholarship@WashULaw
The recently-enacted McCain-Feingold campaign finance law pushes to the fore the questions of whether and to what extent the First Amendment allows government to regulate the electoral activities of political parties. One of the new law's primary components is its attempt to eliminate so-called "soft money"- unlimited donations to national political parties that the Democrats and Republicans have used to circumvent legal limits on campaign contributions? One congressional opponent of the new law called it "the death knell" for political parties' role in elections." Not surprisingly, both major parties have attacked McCain-Feingold. Most Republicans in Congress opposed the legislation, and …

Helping Families To Capitalize On Literacy In Their Homes, Paula K. Azinger
Helping Families To Capitalize On Literacy In Their Homes, Paula K. Azinger
Graduate Research Papers
Literacy events of some sort occur most everyday in every home. Most schools have not considered some children's homes to be a source of rich literacy experiences, yet literacy practices are embedded within the daily routines of almost every family (McCarthey, 1997). The opportunities provided for children's participation in literacy practices in the home environment are closely related to parents' own literacy use at home. This article presents case studies of four families that each had a child involved in America Reads, a federally funded after-school program. The case studies are the result of an ongoing investigation of families' perceptions …

Bullying In Schools : Understanding And Interventions, Donkar Wangmo
Graduate Research Papers
Bullying in schools is a worldwide problem that can have negative consequences for the general school climate and for the right of the students to learn in a safe environment without fear (Banks, 1997). Bullying can also have negative lifelong consequences, both for students who bully and for their victims. Although much of the formal research on bullying has taken place in the Scandinavian countries, Great Britain, and Japan, the problems associated with bullying have been noted and discussed wherever formal schooling environments exist (Banks, 1997). Olweus (1993) reported that one child out of every seven is either a bully …

All eyes are watching school leaders every day. According to Betty Hollas (2001) in Keeping Your StaffMotivated, administrators are the "CEO's (Chief Example for Others)" (p. 7). Staff, students, parents and the school community are examining and interpreting everything principals do and don't do, say, wear, and our overall behavior. Since administrators are under watchful eyes, we have to be positive, energetic, fair, and confident. My life experiences, including the education I received in the principalship program at the University of Northern Iowa and my goals as a future administrator based on the Iowa Standards for School Leaders have influenced …
