Genetic Variation For Fusarium Head Blight Resistance In Soft Red Winter Wheat, Marla Dale Hall Jan 2002

Genetic Variation For Fusarium Head Blight Resistance In Soft Red Winter Wheat, Marla Dale Hall

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Fusarium graminearum, the causative agent of Fusarium head blight, is an economically important pathogen of wheat (Triticum aestivum). Breeding Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistant wheat requires knowledge of the underlying genetic control of FHB resistance.

Two nine-parent diallel analyses were completed in greenhouse and field environments. Combining abilities, variance component ratios, and narrow sense heritabilities for FHB resistance and deoxynivalenol levels were calculated. Significant general and specific combining ability effects were observed. Resistance to FHB seems to be mostly controlled by additive genetic effects with some dominance noted in the field. Resistance noted in the greenhouse environment …

Compositional Perspectives On The Exchange Of Muna Slate Wares In The Late And Terminal Classic Northern Maya Lowlands, Christopher M. Gunn Jan 2002

Compositional Perspectives On The Exchange Of Muna Slate Wares In The Late And Terminal Classic Northern Maya Lowlands, Christopher M. Gunn

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis presents the results of petrographic point counting analyses of Muna Slate ware, thepredominant slipped ceramic ware in the Northern Maya Lowlands during the Late and TerminalClassic Periods (600-1000 A.D.) of Maya prehistory. Recently, it was hypothesized that MunaSlate wares were centrally produced and distributed from the Puuc Hills site of Sayil (Smyth andDore 1994; Smyth et al. 1995). Given that Muna Slate wares may be considered utilitariansubsistence items (sensu Brumfiel and Earle 1987), this suggestion runs counter to severalarguments that ancient Maya utilitarian ceramics production is associated with outlyingcommunities and that their distribution is localized. In the research …

The Jak-Stat Pathway Is Required For Multiple Early Events In Drosophila Oogenesis, Jennifer Renee Matlock Jan 2002

The Jak-Stat Pathway Is Required For Multiple Early Events In Drosophila Oogenesis, Jennifer Renee Matlock

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The Janus kinase (JAK) pathway is an integral part of signaling through a variety of ligands and receptors in mammals. The extensive reutilization and pleiotropy of this pathway in vertebrate development is conserved in other animals as well. In Drosophila melanogaster, JAK signaling is involved in embryonic pattern formation, sex determination, larval blood cell development, wing venation, planar polarity in the eye, and formation of other adult structures. Here we describe several roles for JAK signaling in Drosophila oogenesis. The gene for a JAK pathway ligand, unpaired, is expressed specifically in the polar follicle cells, two pairs of somatic cells …

Roles Of The Jak Pathway In Follicular Patterning In Drosophila, Rongwen Xi Jan 2002

Roles Of The Jak Pathway In Follicular Patterning In Drosophila, Rongwen Xi

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The JAK-STAT pathway is an intracellular signaling pathway that is found to have crucial roles in hematopoiesis, immune response and the development of many other tissues in mammals. The pathway is conserved in Drosophila melanogaster, and is much simpler: there is only one Drosophila JAK (Hopscotch, Hop) and STAT (STAT92E) respectively, while there are at least 4 JAKs and 7 STATs in mammals. The pathway has been intensively studied in Drosophila, and has been implicated in many tissue development and cellular processes. In this work, I present several roles of JAK signaling in oogenesis.First, JAK signaling is required for cell …

"That's Just The Way We Like It": The Children's Horror Film In The 1980'S, Christina Mitchell Bentley Jan 2002

"That's Just The Way We Like It": The Children's Horror Film In The 1980'S, Christina Mitchell Bentley

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The decade of the 1980s has often been considered a reactionary artistic wasteland in film studies, but it was nonetheless a period of volatile changes for the film industry. This period saw the decline of the mainstream horror film and the rise of the family film, two currents that reflect and illuminate the enormous changes in film production, marketing, and distribution. The hybrid genre of the childrens horror film, born in the 1980s, is particularly apt for discussing both the industry changes in this period and childrens relationship as viewers to the medium of film. The thesis defines the childrens …

A "Good Angry Man": Harry Caudill, The Formative Years, 1922-1960, Tylina Jo Mullins Jan 2002

A "Good Angry Man": Harry Caudill, The Formative Years, 1922-1960, Tylina Jo Mullins

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

After the publication of Night Comes to the Cumberland: A Biography of a Depressed Area, Harry Caudill became a spokesperson for Appalachia. Throughout the 1960s, Caudill continued to challenge the corrupt political system of the Cumberland Valley. His indictment of the coal industry as a leading factor in the continual depression of the area led scholars and reformers to a better understanding of the interrelated dynamics affecting the region. Even though with the passage of time, scholars have rejected many of Caudills ideas concerning the mountain people, few doubt that he led the challenge against the political, economic, and social …

Supervisory Control And Failure Diagnosis Of Discrete Event Systems: A Temporal Logic Approach, Shengbing Jiang Jan 2002

Supervisory Control And Failure Diagnosis Of Discrete Event Systems: A Temporal Logic Approach, Shengbing Jiang

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Discrete event systems (DESs) are systems which involve quantities that take a discrete set of values, called states, and which evolve according to the occurrence of certain discrete qualitative changes, called events. Examples of DESs include many man-made systems such as computer and communication networks, robotics and manufacturing systems, computer programs, and automated trac systems. Supervisory control and failure diagnosis are two important problems in the study of DESs. This dissertation presents a temporal logic approach to the control and failure diagnosis of DESs. For the control of DESs, full branching time temporal logic-CTL* is used to express control specifications. …

The Effects Of Information Utilization On Corporate Decision-Making And Export Performance, Trond Breien Peersen Jan 2002

The Effects Of Information Utilization On Corporate Decision-Making And Export Performance, Trond Breien Peersen

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This study investigates if companies that actively use export information have higher export growth rates or greater satisfaction with export performance measures than non-users. Organizational communication structures relating to information flow to decision makers is investigated to provide further insight into the role of export information. The study is based upon the knowledge utilization theory which states company/user characteristics are as important to information utilization as the characteristics of the specific piece of information. Bivariate analysis does not indicate a direct relationship between information use and reported higher export growth rates over the past four years. However, there are indications …

Lifelong Learning & The Library Connection: A Perpectual Model For Tertiary Library Customer Education, Deborah Ann Cronau Ph.D. Jan 2002

Lifelong Learning & The Library Connection: A Perpectual Model For Tertiary Library Customer Education, Deborah Ann Cronau Ph.D.

The Christian Librarian

The Lifelong Learning and Library Connection as a model for tertiary library customer education examined the transitional skill and ability expectations of undergraduate tertiary education students to propose a Perceptual Model of lifelong learning as an alternative to behavioural and relational models which are more experientially or practice based. The hypothesis of a recent study was that the personal perceptions of customers can mirror personal reality. What customers believe can predict what they will pursue. Therefore a Perceptual Model can offer the advantage of facilitating lifelong learning through library customer education approaches geared to the sequential levels of skills needed …

Never On A Sunday: The Sabbath And The Christian Academic Library - Part 2, J. Ray Doerksen Jan 2002

Never On A Sunday: The Sabbath And The Christian Academic Library - Part 2, J. Ray Doerksen

The Christian Librarian

So far I have dealt with the Sabbath as something that is primarily for individuals. I believe that there are also Sabbath implications for Christian institutions as corporate bodies - groups of those who say they belong to God. God does not have a separate group plan, whether we are members of a Christian educational organization or a specific local church. But as a community of Christians, we are a manifestation of the body of Christ for the world. Sabbath observance enables the church to give a corporate testimony to the grace of God in the same way that Israel …

Academic Quality Improvement Project (Aqip) And Accreditation: When Assessment Is Not Optional, Jeffrey Gatten Jan 2002

Academic Quality Improvement Project (Aqip) And Accreditation: When Assessment Is Not Optional, Jeffrey Gatten

Librarian Publications & Presentations

A new university accreditation system in the U.S. is known as the Academic Quality Improvement Project (AQIP), developed in 1999 by the North Central Association. AQIP is designed to offer an alternative to current re-accreditation procedures, engaging institutions in a continuous quality improvement process. Kent State University has been selected as one of thirteen initial institutions to participate. All academic units, including the libraries, are required to develop assessment plans that focus on student learning outcomes. Of particular challenge for the libraries is building meaningful assessments that demonstrate direct impacts on student learning.

Free Riding On Hot Wheels, Victor P. Goldberg Jan 2002

Free Riding On Hot Wheels, Victor P. Goldberg

Faculty Scholarship

When warehouse clubs started making inroads into its market, Toys R Us responded with a policy designed to limit the clubs' access to certain toys. The FTC successfully challenged the policy, arguing that TRU had coordinated a horizontal agreement amongst the toy manufacturers to eliminate competition from this new class of competitors. TRU defended itself, invoking the free-rider rationale. This the Commission rejected as pretext. TRU's argument was better than the Commission gave it credit for, but it failed to press its best argument. That failure stems in part from the shortcomings of the standard free rider formulation, and in …

A Study Of The Validation Of The Constructive Inquiry Science Reasoning Skills Test, Matthew John Stier Jan 2002

A Study Of The Validation Of The Constructive Inquiry Science Reasoning Skills Test, Matthew John Stier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The development of student's science reasoning abilities is a central goal of science education. To meet this goal researchers have investigated the development of science reasoning abilities using a variety of instruments, Classroom Test of Formal Reasoning, Objective Referenced Evaluation in Science, clinical interviews or laboratory process tests. However, while many of these instruments have been designed to test logical thinking, scientific reasoning, and inquiry skills, problems with them include restriction of student choices, guidance, encouragement of guessing, content dependence, testing of cognitive level only, decontextualized questions, developmental inappropriateness, and time/monetary expense. A novel instrument was developed to fill a …

The Book As Social Catalyst And Self Portrait, Eric Dahlberg Jan 2002

The Book As Social Catalyst And Self Portrait, Eric Dahlberg

Theses

The main objective in creating this body of work was to emphasize the importance of personal growth through investigation and subsequent discovery. People have forgotten the spirit of adventure and investigation that was prevalent in the past. They have lost the reverence for education as a personal activity. By using the book as a symbol of knowledge and tool for personal development, I hope to test the viewers' attitudes, and emphasize the importance of educational investigation. My goals in creating this work were multifaceted; partly societal and partly personal. Like many artists, I believe that the work I create serves …

The Role Of Nf-Kb Activation In Hepatic Tumor Promotion By Polycholorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs), Zijing Lu Jan 2002

The Role Of Nf-Kb Activation In Hepatic Tumor Promotion By Polycholorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs), Zijing Lu

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are nongenotoxic hepatic tumor promoters. PCBs have been shown to cause oxidative stress, but the exact mechanism by which PCBs exert their tumor promoting activity is not clear. In our study, PCB-153, a non-coplanar congener, caused a transient increase in hepatic NF-B DNA binding activity and cell proliferation, while PCB-77, a coplanar congener, showed no effect. Our second study using a mouse model that was deficient in the p50 subunit of NF-kB (p50-/-) showed that NF-kB contributes to the changes in hepatocyte proliferation and apoptosis in response to PCB-153 treatment: a single dose of PCB-153 increased hepatic …

Simultaneous Multithreading: Operating System Perspective, Vyacheslav Rubinfine Jan 2002

Simultaneous Multithreading: Operating System Perspective, Vyacheslav Rubinfine

Theses

Developing CPU architecture is a very complicated, iterative process that requires significant time and money investments. The motivation for this work is to find ways to decreases the amount of time and money needed for the development of hardware architectures. The main problem is that it is very difficult to determine the performance of the architecture, since it is impossible to take any performance measurements untill upon completion of the development process. Consecutively, it is impossible to improve the performance of the product or to predict the influence of different parts of the architecture on the architecture's overall performance. Another …

Thermal Behaviour Of Copper(Ii), Nickel(Ii), Cobalt(Ii) And Palladium(Ii) Complexes Of N,N-Dimethyl-N'-Benzoylthiourea, Göktürk Avşar, Nevzat Külcü, Hakan Arslan Jan 2002

Thermal Behaviour Of Copper(Ii), Nickel(Ii), Cobalt(Ii) And Palladium(Ii) Complexes Of N,N-Dimethyl-N'-Benzoylthiourea, Göktürk Avşar, Nevzat Külcü, Hakan Arslan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

N,N-dimethyl-N'-benzoylthiourea (DMBT) complexes of Ni(II), Cu(II), Co(II) and Pd(II) were synthesised. The thermal decomposition of these metal complexes was investigated by TG, DTG and DTA. A GC-MS combined system was used to identify the products during pyrolytic decomposition. The pyrolytic end-products were identified by X-ray powder diffraction. The thermoanalytical data of these complexes are presented in this communication. The kinetic analysis of the thermogravimetric data was performed by using the Coats-Redfern and Horowitz-Metzger methods. All the metal complexes except Cu(II) complex undergo decomposition in three stages and NiS, CoS, Pd, and Cu remained as end-products of the complexes.

Struggling High School Readers' Responses To A Literature-Rich Curriculum, Fran Harrison Stephens Jan 2002

Struggling High School Readers' Responses To A Literature-Rich Curriculum, Fran Harrison Stephens

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

The purpose of this study was to determine how struggling readers in 11th grade Applied Communications classes responded to literary texts that are typically taught to college-prep students. Differentiation of literature for college-prep and techprep students began in the early twentieth century; since then, noncollege-bound students have traditionally studied literary texts that have been rewritten on a lower reading level to accommodate struggling readers in these classes. In this research project, I taught 11th grade Applied Communications students the same literature that college-prep students read; using a qualitative research design, I analyzed the impact of this literature on these students. …

Georgia High School Principals' Perceptions Of Inclusion, James Timothy Yarborough Jan 2002

Georgia High School Principals' Perceptions Of Inclusion, James Timothy Yarborough

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

While considerable research has been conducted concerning the perceptions of teachers regarding the practice of inclusion, there is little corresponding research about the perceptions of principals towards inclusion. Also, much ofthe existing research is contradictory. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to provide educational policymakers with data regarding inclusion. Since principals are responsible for designing and instituting inclusion programs at the school level, their current and prevailing perceptions regarding inclusion were the missing pieces of the information puzzle.

In an attempt to fill this void, the researcher created a survey with quantitative and qualitative components. The survey was distributed …

Database Protection In A Global Economy, Jerome H. Reichman Jan 2002

Database Protection In A Global Economy, Jerome H. Reichman

Faculty Scholarship

In 1996, a database treaty that the European Commission had put forward, in connection with the WIPO negotiations on transmissions in cyberspace, ultimately failed to win the support of other regional groups. Since then, the inability of the United States Congress to enact any form of database legislation has stymied further multilateral undertakings on this topic. This impasse may soon be broken, however, owing to the change of Administrations and to the appointment of new committee chairmen in the United States House of Representatives.

This article will discuss the prospects for an international regulatory framework for non copyrightable databases in …
