Semiparametric Maximum Likelihood Estimates Of Spatial Dependence, R. Kelley Pace, James P. Lesage Jan 2002

Semiparametric Maximum Likelihood Estimates Of Spatial Dependence, R. Kelley Pace, James P. Lesage

Faculty Publications

We semiparametrically model spatial dependence via a combination of simpler weight matrices (termed spatial basis matrices) and fit this model via maximum likelihood. Estimation of the model relies on the intuition that bounds to the log-determinant term in the log-likelihood can provide penalties to overfitting both the level and pattern of spatial dependence. By relying on symmetric and doubly stochastic spatial basis matrices that reflect different weight specifications assigned to neighboring observations, we are able to derive a mathematical expression for bounds on the log-determinant term that appears in the likelihood function. These bounds can be conveniently calculated allowing us …

An Undergraduate Biophysics Program: Curricular Examples And Lessons From A Liberal Arts Context, Suzanne Amador Kane

Physics Faculty Scholarship

I wrote this article to give a thorough and comprehensive overview of what such programs look like and what sort of institutional challenges arise on putting these programs together. The stimulus for doing so was the steady stream of requests, usually via email, from other college physics departments in terested in starting up their own biophysics prohgrams and from other professors wishing to teach biophysics. --author-supplied description

Securities Regulation As Lobster Trap: A Credible Commitment Theory Of Mandatory Disclosure, Edward B. Rock Jan 2002

Securities Regulation As Lobster Trap: A Credible Commitment Theory Of Mandatory Disclosure, Edward B. Rock

Faculty Articles

What functions does the existing mandatory disclosure system serve? In this Article, I argue that the existing SEC system can be understood as providing issuers with a mechanism for making a credible commitment to high quality, comprehensive disclosure for an indefinite period into the future. This credible commitment device is particularly useful to new domestic issuers and to foreign issuers seeking to tap the U.S. capital markets. This credible commitment justification explains the striking but little discussed practical and formal asymmetry between the ease·of entry into the SEC system and the difficulty of exit from it. I then consider the …

Meeting By Signals, Playing By Norms: Complementary Accounts Of Nonlegal Cooperation In Institutions, Edward B. Rock, Michael L. Wachter Jan 2002

Meeting By Signals, Playing By Norms: Complementary Accounts Of Nonlegal Cooperation In Institutions, Edward B. Rock, Michael L. Wachter

Faculty Articles

This Essay on Eric Posner's Law and Social Norms examines the extent to which signaling theory can provide a model for understanding non-legally enforced cooperation within institutions. After reviewing the signaling model upon which Posner's book is based, we take the employment relationship in firms as a case study. We argue that while signaling theory may be useful in explaining the formation of that relationship, it does not provide a basis for understanding its observed regularities, or of the very limited role played by the legal rules in rendering the relationship incentive compatible. We conclude that our analysis and Posner's …

Are Judges Really More Principled Than Voters?, Roderick M. Hills Jr. Jan 2002

Are Judges Really More Principled Than Voters?, Roderick M. Hills Jr.

Faculty Articles

Eisgruber and Dworkin have substituted the life tenure and unchanging salary of Article III judges for the real property of the landed gentry, but, mutatis mutandi, the logic of their argument is the same as the old Tory case for the House of Lords. Article III courts are "forums of principle," because the Constitution guarantees that they enjoy "social prestige and a comfortable salary" regardless of their decisions. Thus, judges, like the landed gentry, do not stand to gain or lose any material benefit from their exercise of power: They can deliberate freely about the meaning of moral principle "on …

Human Rights Treaties And The U.S. Constitution, David Golove Jan 2002

Human Rights Treaties And The U.S. Constitution, David Golove

Faculty Articles

Much of the focus of this Symposium has been on the exportation of U.S. laws and procedural practices to the rest of the world. I suspect that this focus will seem quite natural to most Americans, who are accustomed to thinking that our legal system, especially our constitutional commitment to fundamental rights, provides a model that other countries would be well advised to emulate. This confident, perhaps arrogant, self-conception as a moral beacon for the rest of the world has deep roots in U.S. history and seems as strong today as it has ever been. In contrast, many Americans are …

Selective Disclosures In The Public Capital Markets, Stephen J. Choi Jan 2002

Selective Disclosures In The Public Capital Markets, Stephen J. Choi

Faculty Articles

Publicly-traded corporations contain a wealth of non-public material information. Insider trading prohibitions limit the ability of corporate insiders to profit from this information advantage through trades in their own corporations' securities. Some may view the SEC's recently promulgated Regulation FD as complementary to restrictions on insider trading, limiting the ability of firms to confer on outsiders a similar inside information advantage through selective disclosures. The employment of selective disclosures to favor outside investors and analysts, nonetheless, may provide a number of benefits to all shareholders of a corporation. Selective disclosures, for example, may help subsidize the formation of blocks of …

Alternative School Administrators "At Risk": What Does It Mean For Children?, Christopher Dunbar Jr. Jan 2002

Alternative School Administrators "At Risk": What Does It Mean For Children?, Christopher Dunbar Jr.

Trotter Review

Alternative public schools have evolved from their origins in school choice and the progressive education movement of the 1920's into a system of schools that have become the assigned "dumping ground" for a population of ill-prepared, behaviorally disruptive youth, a population that is also disproportionately composed of minority students. Research suggests these schools fall short of providing an optimal educational opportunity for their students. There are multiple factors that place alternative school administrators "at risk" of failing in their charge to educate. Using a case study from a Midwestern alternative school, the author focuses on policy and the role of …

Physics Faculty Scholarship

We report on a deep search for radio pulsations toward five unidentified ASCA X-ray sources coincident with EGRET γ-ray sources. This search has led to the discovery of a young and energetic pulsar using data obtained with the new Wideband Arecibo Pulsar Processor. PSR J2021+3651 is likely associated with the X-ray source AX J2021.1+3651, which in turn is likely associated with the COS B high-energy γ-ray source 2CG 075+00, also known as GeV J2020+3658 or 3EG J2021+3716. PSR J2021+3651 has a rotation period of P ~ 104 ms and ~ 9.6 × 10-14, implying a characteristic age of τc …

Igbo As An Endangered Language, Chukwuma Azuonye Jan 2002

Igbo As An Endangered Language, Chukwuma Azuonye

Africana Studies Faculty Publication Series

At first sight, the question "Is Igbo an endangered language," would appear to be grossly misplaced, since the survival of the language seems to be well guaranteed by its status both as one of the three main languages of Nigeria and one of the major languages of literature, education, and commerce in Africa. Furthermore, with its well over 25 million native speakers who live in one of the most densely populated areas of the world with an exceptionally high fertility rate and a traditional world view and culture that promote the raising of large families, it would appear that there …

Press Reports Of Animal Hoarding, Arnold Arluke, Randy Frost, Gail Steketee, Gary Patronek, Carter Luke, Edward Messner, Jane Nathanson, Michelle Papazian

Psychology: Faculty Publications

This article explores how the press reports nonhuman animal hoarding and hoarders. It discusses how 100 articles from 1995 to the present were content analyzed. Analysis revealed five emotional themes that include drama, revulsion, sympathy, indignation, and humor. While these themes draw readers' attention and make disparate facts behind cases understandable by packaging them in familiar formats, they also present an inconsistent picture of animal hoarding that can confuse readers about the nature and significance of this behavior as well as animal abuse, more generally.

The Political Personality Of U.S. President George W. Bush, Aubrey Immelman Jan 2002

The Political Personality Of U.S. President George W. Bush, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of U.S. president George W. Bush, conducted 1998–2000 from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon.

Psychodiagnostically relevant data regarding Bush was extracted from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with Axis II of DSM–IV.

The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed in accordance with interpretive guidelines provided in the MIDC and Millon Index of Personality Styles manuals. Bush was found to be …
