Tracking Transfer Of Reform Methodology From Science And Math College Courses To The Teaching Style Of Beginning Teachers Of Grades 5-12, E. Judson, D. Sawada

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The purpose of this study was to determine if reformed science and math courses at community colleges and the university were impacting education majors as they began a teaching career. The reformed courses, in contrast to typical lecture classes, implemented inquiry-based methods that emphasized deep understanding of fundamental science and math concepts. Trained evaluators, utilizing the Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP) gathered a total of 86 classroom observations to gauge the level of reform that beginning teachers (one to three years’ teaching experience) were implementing in grades 5-12. The pre-service experience of the beginning teachers varied from having had zero …

[Review Of] Jane M. Gaines, Fire And Desire: Mixed-Race Movies In The Silent Era, George H. Junne Jr

Ethnic Studies Review

Jane M.Gaines has written an important book on the topic of race movies and race relations in early American cinema. Using eclectic analyses that range from W.E.B. DuBois' insights on "double consciousness," to queer theory, Gaines is able to critically examine issues of mixed race people and race mixing in silent films. She wonderfully reworks some theories until they yield beneficial interpretations. For example, Gaines argues against the blanket use of psychoanalysis as a tool to comprehend African American Experience, including cinema, because, she says, "Historically psychoanalysis had no cognizance of black people nor was any attempt made to understand …

A Technique For Visualizing Software Architectures, Jon M. Inouye Jan 2002

A Technique For Visualizing Software Architectures, Jon M. Inouye

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Software architecture appeared in the early 1990s as a distinct discipline within software engineering. Models based on software architecture attempt to reduce the complexity of software by providing relatively coarse-grained structures for representing different aspects of software development. A software architecture typically consists of various components and connections arranged in a specific topology. Elements of the topology can serve as abstractions on (for example) modules, objects, protocols or interfaces. The meaning of the topology depends on viewpoint.

Software architectures' can be described using an architecture description language (ADL). The key goals of ADLs are to communicate alternate designs to the …

Parent-Child Attachment And Communication Quality As Indicators Of Psychological Adjustment : Preliminary Implications For Psychological Maltreatment Research, Sarah Kobielski

Master's Theses

This study examined the dynamics of the parent-child relationship by determining whether or not the quality of parent-child attachment and communication patterns are related to child endorsed adjustment outcomes. In addition, examination of the parentchild relationship is useful way to better understand the domain of psychological maltreatment, and likewise, attachment and communication quality are suggested to major contributing factors to the development of psychological maltreatment. 42 children completed the Parent-Adolescent Communication scale (PACS), the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), and the Emotional Symptoms Index (ESI). 22 parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Matson Evaluation of …

Enterprise Integration Modeling Linking Enterprise Integration Architecture With Business Strategy Planning, Easton B. Rhodd Jan 2002

Enterprise Integration Modeling Linking Enterprise Integration Architecture With Business Strategy Planning, Easton B. Rhodd

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The goals for this study were twofold. The first goal was to identify planning variables for linking both organizational and architectural objectives for developing enterprise integration architecture. The second goal was to validate enterprise integration modeling methodology as a viable planning tool for the design, development, and maintenance of the enterprise integration architecture.

This lack of linkage at the intellectual dimension level can be characterized as having a dysfunctional effect on enterprise integration strategy formulation and infrastructure development. There is a disjoint between adoptions of appropriate information technology in relation to organizational objectives. This includes misapplication of investments in information …

The Design Of Online Learning Communities For Older Adults, Martha Marie Snyder Jan 2002

The Design Of Online Learning Communities For Older Adults, Martha Marie Snyder

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Rapid, ongoing advancements in the growth of the Internet and web-based technology coupled with the steadily increasing number of older adults in our society create a significant need for the design of safe, convenient, and accessible online learning communities for this demographic. The primary goal of this dissertation was to conduct formative research into methodologies for developing a new instructional-design theory for establishing online learning communities for older adults. The aim of this work was to apply formative research, which is a type of developmental research used to create a new design theory or improve an existing theory, to the …

Missoula Ecopaws: Environmental Incentive Program To Combat Environmental Inaction, Jaymie Sanders, Valayna Cannon, Katy Mccumber, Hattie Ransom

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Climate change has had a drastic impact on the planet on a biological, political, and socioeconomic level. The excessive consumption of natural resources and human-induced pollution has contributed to rising temperatures, intensified weather patterns, and an increase in natural disasters (Nations, 2019). This has led to high levels of eco-anxiety and grief in younger generations, driven by psychological factors, misinformation, and governmental resistance to meaningful change which has influenced inaction in individuals (Hickman et al, 2021). In order to address these growing concerns, we have created a rewards program for our campus community to encourage eco-positive behavior. Missoula EcoPaws is …

Positive And Negative Roles Of Cd72 In B Cell Function., Hsin-Jung Wu, Subbarao Bondada Jan 2002

Positive And Negative Roles Of Cd72 In B Cell Function., Hsin-Jung Wu, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Regulation of B cell activation depends on integration of signals transmitted by the B cell receptor (BCR) and a variety of co-receptors. CD72 is a B cell co-receptor that is expressed in all stages of B cell development except plasma cells. Ligation of CD72 enhances B cell growth and differentiation. Recently, the class IV semaphoring, CD100, has been identified as the natural ligand for CD72. Cytoplasmic domain of CD72 has been shown to be associated with SHP-1 leading to the proposal that the positive effects of CD72 on B cell response may result from sequestration of negative signals from BCR. …

Foreword: Conference On Legal Ethics: "What Needs Fixing?", Roy D. Simon

Hofstra Law Review

The remarkable collection of papers in this special issue of the Hofstra Law Review grew out of Hofstra University School of Law's third major ethics conference, which was held at Hofstra from September 9 to September 11, 2001. The papers are linked together by the broad theme expressed in the conference's title: Legal Ethics: What Needs Fixing?

n this Foreword, I want to do three simple things. First, I want to talk about how Hofstra put the ethics conference together. Second, I want to comment on the connections between some of the papers. Third, I want to say a few …

Corporate Courtship Gone Sour: Applying A Bankruptcy Approach To Termination Fee Provisions In Merger And Acquisition Agreements, Ely R. Levy Jan 2002

Corporate Courtship Gone Sour: Applying A Bankruptcy Approach To Termination Fee Provisions In Merger And Acquisition Agreements, Ely R. Levy

Hofstra Law Review

This paper examines Delaware's judicial treatment of deal protection measures, particularly termination fee provisions. The paper explores the tension between the economic function of these provisions in inducing bidders and potentially compensating them for opportunity and transaction costs in the event of deal termination vs. the ability of large termination fees to constrain and coerce shareholder choice by obligating the target to pay out the fee in the event of a shareholder no vote.

In light of these issues, the paper explores the different standards of review that Delaware courts have and could potentially apply in ex post review of …

Human Identification Theory And The Identity Theft Problem, Lynn M. Lopucki Jan 2002

Human Identification Theory And The Identity Theft Problem, Lynn M. Lopucki

UF Law Faculty Publications

This paper builds on the theory of human identification proposed by Professor Roger Clarke and uses the product as the basis for a proposed solution to the identity theft problem. The expanded theory holds that all human identification fits a single model. The identifior matches the characteristics of a person observed in a first observation with the characteristics of a person observed in a second observation to determine whether they are the same person. From the theory it follows that a characteristic used for identification in the credit reporting system, such as social security number, mother's maiden name and date …

Design And Performance Evaluation Of Networked Storage Architectures, Xubin He Jan 2002

Design And Performance Evaluation Of Networked Storage Architectures, Xubin He

Open Access Dissertations

Data storage plays an essential role in today's fast-growing data-intensive network services. Within the past decades, processor speed and network bandwidth improve dramatically while disks have not kept pace with them in terms of access speed because of the mechanical nature of magnetic disks. This dissertation comprises of an intensive investigation on issues related to high performance networked storage architectures. First, this thesis proposes a novel networked storage architecture called SCSI-To-IP Cache Storage (STICS), which couples reliable and high-speed data caching with low-overhead conversion between SCSI and IP protocols. Through the efficient caching algorithm and localization of certain unnecessary protocol …

Hegel, Antigone, And Women, Philip J. Kain Jan 2002

Hegel, Antigone, And Women, Philip J. Kain

Philosophy

When Hegel turns to a treatment of culture in Chapter VI of the Phenomenology—as anyone who has read his early writings would expect1—he begins with the ancient Greek polis. There the human spirit first fully emancipated itself from nature as it had not, in Hegel’s opinion, in Egypt; yet it was still in perfect harmony and balance with the natural. In Hegel’s view, this was an age of beaut y that produced a social community and an ethical life where citizens were free and at home. What is a bit surprising, though, is that in the Phenomenology Hegel does not …
