The Ultraviolet Line Spectrum Of The Soft X-Ray Transient Xte J1118+480: A Cno-Processed Core Exposed, C. A. Haswell, R. I. Hynes, A. R. King, K. Schenker

Faculty Publications

We compare ultraviolet (UV) spectra of the recent soft X-ray transients XTE J1118+480 and XTE J1859+226. The emission line strengths in XTE J1118+480 strongly suggest that the accreting material has been CNO processed. We show that this system must have come into contact with a secondary star of about 1.5 M⊙, and an orbital period ∼ 15 h, very close to the bifurcation value at which the nuclear and angular momentum loss time-scales are similar. Subsequent evolution to the current period of 4.1 h was driven by angular momentum loss. In passing through a period of 7.75 h the secondary …

The NuTeV Collaboration has extracted the electroweak parameter [Formula presented] from the measurement of the ratios of neutral current to charged current [Formula presented] and [Formula presented] cross sections. Our value, [Formula presented], is 3 standard deviations above the standard model prediction. We also present a model independent analysis of the same data in terms of neutral-current quark couplings. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

Linear Optics And Projective Measurements Alone Suffice To Create Large-Photon-Number Path Entanglement, Hwang Lee, Pieter Kok, Nicolas J. Cerf, Jonathan P. Dowling Jan 2002

Linear Optics And Projective Measurements Alone Suffice To Create Large-Photon-Number Path Entanglement, Hwang Lee, Pieter Kok, Nicolas J. Cerf, Jonathan P. Dowling

Faculty Publications

We propose a method for preparing maximal path entanglement with a definite photon-number N, larger than two, using projective measurements. In contrast with the previously known schemes, our method uses only linear optics. Specifically, we exhibit a way of generating four-photon, path-entangled states of the form [Formula Presented] using only four beam splitters and two detectors. These states are of major interest as a resource for quantum interferometric sensors as well as for optical quantum lithography and quantum holography. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

Quantum Path Distributions For High-Order Harmonics In Rare Gas Atoms, Mette B. Gaarde, Kenneth J. Schafer Jan 2002

Quantum Path Distributions For High-Order Harmonics In Rare Gas Atoms, Mette B. Gaarde, Kenneth J. Schafer

Faculty Publications

We present quantum path distributions of high-order harmonics produced by rare gas atoms interacting with an intense 810 nm laser field, obtained by numerical integration of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation within the single active electron approximation. We find that the distributions are sensitive to the atomic potentials, and differ from the distributions predicted by the strong field approximation. We demonstrate that these differences can lead to significant differences in the time-frequency behavior of the harmonics produced in a macroscopic nonlinear medium. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

Acetylcholinesterase Mediated Susceptibility Of Soldiers And Workers Of Formosan Subterranean Termite (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) To Chlorpyrifos., Sridevi S. Gatti, Gregg Henderson, Yehia A.I. Abdel-Aal, Sanaa A. Ibrahim Jan 2002

Ibrahim

Faculty Publications

Target site studies were undertaken to examine the difference in susceptibility of Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, workers and soldiers to chlorpyrifos. Workers exhibited significantly greater acetylcholinesterase activity per insect than soldiers (118.63 +/- 48.51 versus 47.98 +/- 22.59 mOD/min/insect equivalent). Likewise, enzyme activity (mean +/- SD) per milligram of protein was greater in workers than soldiers (440.30 +/- 267.43 versus 311.53 +/- 149.83 mOD/min/mg protein). The enzyme of soldiers was more sensitive to the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors eserine and chlorpyrifos-oxon than that of workers. The I50s of chlorpyrifos-oxon were 2.66 and 4.59 nM for soldiers and workers, respectively, …

Laptop Requirement Usage And Impact In Graduate Ils Education, Bin Li, Gregory B. Newby Jan 2002

Laptop Requirement Usage And Impact In Graduate Ils Education, Bin Li, Gregory B. Newby

Faculty Publications

A new requirement for personal laptop computer ownership was implemented for graduate information and library science (ILS) students. This study evaluates the impact and usage of laptop computers, and the real and envisioned benefits of laptop ownership during the first six months of the requirement's implementation. Online and email surveys were used for data gathering, and a combination of quantitative and qualitative data were collected. Student perspectives were emphasized, and institutional background were examined. It was found that students' reaction to the requirement and their usage of laptops was influenced by their previous experiences with computers, their computer skills, and …

Numerical Methods For The Simulation Of Dynamical Mass Transfer In Binaries, Patrick M. Motl, Joel E. Tohline, Juhan Frank Jan 2002

Numerical Methods For The Simulation Of Dynamical Mass Transfer In Binaries, Patrick M. Motl, Joel E. Tohline, Juhan Frank

Faculty Publications

We describe computational tools that have been developed to simulate dynamical mass transfer in semidetached, polytropic binaries that are initially executing synchronous rotation upon circular orbits. Initial equilibrium models are generated with a self-consistent field algorithm; models are then evolved in time with a parallel, explicit, Eulerian hydrodynamics code with no assumptions made about the symmetry of the system. Poisson's equation is solved along with the equations of ideal fluid mechanics to allow us to treat the nonlinear tidal distortion of the components in a fully self-consistent manner. We present results from several standard numerical experiments that have been conducted …

Stability Properties Of A Formulation Of Einstein's Equations, Gioel Calabrese, Jorge Pullin, Olivier Sarbach, Manuel Tiglio Jan 2002

Stability Properties Of A Formulation Of Einstein's Equations, Gioel Calabrese, Jorge Pullin, Olivier Sarbach, Manuel Tiglio

Faculty Publications

We study the stability properties of the Kidder-Scheel-Teukolsky (KST) many-parameter formulation of Einstein's equations for weak gravitational waves on flat space-time from a continuum and numerical point of view. At the continuum, performing a linearized analysis of the equations around flat space-time, it turns out that they have, essentially, no non-principal terms. As a consequence, in the weak field limit the stability properties of this formulation depend only on the level of hyperbolicity of the system. At the discrete level we present some simple one-dimensional simulations using the KST family. The goal is to analyze the type of instabilities that …
