What Does Digital Technology Have To Do With Yaghan?, Lenore A. Grenoble, Lindsay J. Whaley
Linguistic Discovery
Research that involves the collection of language data is notoriously labor intensive, often requiring fieldwork in remote places, where the travel alone is extremely time-consuming, not to mention expensive. Funding and institutional support for such research is limited, and often impossible to obtain without the attendant claim on the part of the researcher that paradigm-shifting theoretical issues lurk behind the data. Prestige within the academy does not come through careful analyses of the grammatical categories of Oneida, the nasal phonemes of Tequistlatec, or vowel mergers in Pittsburgh, but through pronouncements of innate linguistic structures, the evolutionary development of language or …

Book Review - Prairie Birds: Fragile Splendor In The Great Plains, Neil P. Bernstein
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Paul A. Johnsguard has established himself as one of the most prolific natural history writers in the recent past. Indeed, before I could finish reading Prairie Birds, the University of Kansas Press sent me The Nature of Nebraska, also by Johnsguard. These works follow closely after This Fragile Land, A Natural History of the Nebraska Sandhills (1995), which I favorably reviewed a few years ago, also about the Great Plains. It goes without saying, that there is a fair amount of overlap in these works, both in the subject matter and the illustrations. Rather than criticize the overlap among these …

We discuss major trends in the literature and in the movement and current issues and debates, including risk assessment, GIS mapping, and community-based research and campaigns. Annotations are provided for over 100 publications. We also include a table of GIS based studies and findings, a list of publications and dissertations not summarized, and a list of special issues and …

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back: Making Change In Early Head Start, Patrice W. Hallock
One Step Forward, Two Steps Back: Making Change In Early Head Start, Patrice W. Hallock
Doctoral Dissertations
This is a field study of families and home visitors in Early Head Start. Its purpose is to understand the social context of infants born into poverty and to understand the home visiting relationship when families receive intervention services from home visitors who are socially and economically different. Two questions were posed: First, how do socially and economically diverse families perceive infant well-being? Second, what is the experience of families who participate in Early Head Start? The study used interviews, participant observation, and cultural interpretation to understand the perspective of participant families.
The study provided evidence that economically and socially …
A Gender And Development (Gad) Implementation Evaluation: Testimonios Reveal The Successes, Challenges, And Unpredicted Results For Women's Equality And Community Sustainability, Melinda Salazar
Doctoral Dissertations
This is a case study of a Gender and Development implementation evaluation in several rural, Baha'i communities in Andean Bolivian. "Traditional Media as Change Agent," funded by UNIFEM (UN International Fund for Women) and implemented by BIC (Baha'i International Community), was an innovative, non-economic approach to change gender attitudes and behaviors by including men in a consultative process using traditional media. This study responded to criticism that GAD ignored the environment, was lodged squarely in Western economic development thought and Western feminist values, and lacked the voices of the women and men for whom development aims to benefit.
This study …

"Milonguitas" En Buenos Aires (1910-1940): Tango, Ascenso Social Y Tuberculosis, Diego Armus
History Faculty Works
During the first three decades of the 20th century, in the fervor of urban change that transformed Buenos Aires into a metropolis, poetry, cinema, theater, and the lyrics of the tango repeatedly portrayed the path of muchachas de barrio who, by taking to nightlife and the downtown cabarets, placed their stakes on a society where social ascent — limited yet real — was part of the urban experience. For the most part written by men, the lyrics speak of these journeys in a tone of censure, and tuberculosis is cast as a form of punishment for these young women who …

St 501 Method And Praxis In Theology, Zaida Maldonado Perez
Syllabi
“Why am I doing what I am doing the way I am doing it (and not another way)?” In the 12th century, Anselm of Canterbury expressed the desire to deepen his knowledge and therefore also his relationship to God as “faith seeking understanding.” Others have stated it by asking “what would Jesus do?” or, “how can I be faithful in this time and place?” All of these questions have a key common denominator--a conscious effort to understand in order to better our service and our relationship to God, to our communities, to the world. This conscious effort demands that we …

The Economic Value Of Companion Animals: A Legal And Anthropological Argument For Special Valuation, Geordie Duckler
The Economic Value Of Companion Animals: A Legal And Anthropological Argument For Special Valuation, Geordie Duckler
Animal Law Review
Mr. Duckler delves into valuation issues that arise in the context of recovery of non-economic damages for death and injury to companion animals. He argues that the special nature of companion animals in society necessitates an assigned monetary worth to such animals that is distinct from and exceeds mere market value. As support for this contention, Mr. Duckler provides relevant legal, sociological, and anthropological analyses.
Is There A Place For Social Work Within Rural Schools, And What Can It Look Like?, Kris Robertson
Is There A Place For Social Work Within Rural Schools, And What Can It Look Like?, Kris Robertson
Theses : Honours
The impetus for this research followed my social work placement in a rural high school in the Southwest area of Western Australia. The aim of this research is to identify a role for school social work in relation to practice in rural schools, and to develop a conceptual framework for practice. The literature review sought to demonstrate a need for such services by demonstrating the issues for youth in rural areas. The claim was that providing such a service in rural areas would address issues of access and equity, in line with social justice principles. The results of this research …

Review Of Shapers Of The Great Debate On Native Americans- Land, Spirit, And Power: A Biographical Dictionary By Bruce E. Johansen, Robert L. Bee
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This useful compilation of biographical sketches spans about 375 years of conflict. The basic issue is Native land rights versus unremitting colonial expansion. The eight chapters are arranged as separate chronological periods, beginning with seventeenth-century New England, and generally track the westward movement of the frontier. Each chapter presents a biographical sketch of its period's key players. The actors are juxtaposed to present both Native and non-Native views of Native land rights and sovereignty. Sequoyah and John Ross appear in a chapter with Andrew Jackson and John Marshall; Custer is set against Sitting Bull and Red Cloud. Lakota spokesmen Black …

Review Of Voices Of Wounded Knee By William S. E. Coleman, Christer Lindberg
Review Of Voices Of Wounded Knee By William S. E. Coleman, Christer Lindberg
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
I did not know then how much was ended. When I look back now from this high hill of my old age, I can still see the butchered women and children lying heaped and scattered all along the crooked gulch as plain as when I saw them with eyes still young. And I can see that something else died there in the bloody mud, and was buried in the blizzard. A people's dream died there. It was a beautiful dream.
The heartbreaking words of Black Elk and the tragic events at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota, in December of 1890, …

Review Of Collecting Native America, 1870-1960 Edited By Shepard Krech Iii And Barbara A. Hail, Margaret A. Mackichan
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Setting out to explore the roles of private collectors in founding North American public museums of American Indian materials, the editors of Collecting Native America have assembled discussions of Sheldon Jackson (1834-1909), Alaska's best known late-nineteenth- century missionary collector; David Ross McCord (1844-1930), founder of the McCord National Museum, Montreal, which opened in 1921; Charles Fletcher Lummis (1859-1928) of the Southwest Museum, Los Angeles, chartered in 1907; Rudolf F. Haffenreffer (1874-1954), of Rhode Island's King Philip Museum, established during the 1920s; Phoebe Apperson Hearst (1842-1919), mother of newspaper publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst and founder, in 1901, of the Museum …
