You Are Likely To Be Eaten By A Grue: How Computer Games Are Consuming Modern Culture, Douglas Alexander Jan 2002

You Are Likely To Be Eaten By A Grue: How Computer Games Are Consuming Modern Culture, Douglas Alexander

Theses

Computer games represent an area of untapped, unappreciated potential in the human-computer relationship. Having long been considered "low culture" and unworthy of scholarly attention, the focus on games is intensifying as the field of ludology emerges. The first game was created forty years ago, and since then games have branched out from their traditionally young male user base and gained popularity with both adults and females. Violence in and addiction to games remain controversial topics, but the threat posed by games fades a bit in comparison to the fascinating insights they give us into literature, art, and cinema. Their cultural …

Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 50% to 80% of pregnant women complain of low back pain, edema, and other discomforts. Although exercise programs have been recommended to decrease the discomforts of pregnancy and improve body image. There is a paucity of research in this area. There is very little research on exercise in water, despite theoretical and empirical advantages of such activity.

This study’s aims were to determine the impact of an aquatic exercise intervention program on pregnant women’s body image, self-efficacy, perception of barriers to health-promoting behaviors, health-promoting behaviors, mobility, and discomforts. Patterns Of Phamaceutical Advertising To Physicians: An Exploratory Content Analysis Of Printed Pharmaceutical Ads Targeted To Pediatricians, Paul Tebbey

Theses

A content analysis of pharmaceutical product ads targeted toward pediatricians in the professional media was conducted to determine the extent to which they were informative as well as the quantity and types of information presented. The content analysis model selected was based on previously published and widely implemented standards that have been documented to support research propositions. The study analyzed 67 separate products ads that were published in pediatrician-targeted journals during the first half of 2002. The results indicate that each pharmaceutical product ad contains an abundance of information (average = 5.1 cues) that may help in educating and Morming …

Application Of A Synalysis Packaging Design Method In Pc Magniviewer Package Redesign, Jun Cao

Theses

This study addresses the over-packaging phenomena in packaging design perspectives and, through the review of architectural design methods and packaging design principles, sets up a SyNalysis packaging design method with the packaging design process. Furthermore, an example of a PC magnifier redesigning is demonstrated in the thesis, step by step. The SyNalysis method contains scientific analytical methods and the designer's creative, synthetic methods. Its embodiment is presented in three processes: analysis, design and evaluation of the processes. The SyNalysis packaging design method serves as a guide to help packaging designers, and especially new and inexperienced designers pursue a more logical …

Making A Business Case For Integrating Multidimensional Sustainability In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Thea Jung Jan 2002

Making A Business Case For Integrating Multidimensional Sustainability In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Thea Jung

Theses

To grow their bottom lines, companies invest in business value drivers. This thesis examined whether multidimensional sustainability performance could be one of those drivers in the pharmaceutical industry. There are currently very few (if any) mandatory requirements for integrating multidimensional sustainability. Nor are there standardized methods of integrating, measuring, or communicating multidimensional sustainability. This thesis reviewed, compared, and contrasted (also known as benchmarking) voluntary sustainability initiatives and pharmaceutical company sustainability initiatives. The results were as follows: 1) the concept of multidimensional sustainability is generally understood; 2) integrating multidimensional sustainability is the morally and ethically correct action for pharmaceutical companies to …

Genetic Diversity Of Balbiani Ring L Gene In Two Species Of Chironomus, Lola-Mae Palmer Jan 2002

Genetic Diversity Of Balbiani Ring L Gene In Two Species Of Chironomus, Lola-Mae Palmer

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Differences in genetic composition have been predicted among aquatic midge fly larva called chironomids. Although several genes including microsatellites and ribosomal protein genes have been explored in our lab, the gene that has so far been studied the most is the Balbiani Ring (BR) 1 gene. There are several genes in this family, including Balbiani Ring 2.1, 2.2 and 6. These BR genes are known to contain long arrays of tandemly repeated units with a ranked repeat organization (Paulsson et al.1992). This secretory protein gene forms a large puff located on polytene chromosome IV (Bentivegna et al., 1993). The gene …

The Representation Of Aboriginal English In School Literacy Materials, Ian G. Malcolm, Ellen Grote, Louella Eggington, Farzad Sharifian Jan 2002

The Representation Of Aboriginal English In School Literacy Materials, Ian G. Malcolm, Ellen Grote, Louella Eggington, Farzad Sharifian

Research outputs pre 2011

Australian education systems have, as a whole, had limited success in attempting to impart literacy in standard English to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. One measure of the magnitude of the problem is shown in the national figures relating student achievement at various levels to agreed benchmarks. It has been shown that the Year 3 benchmarks have been achieved by fewer than two thirds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, whereas they have been achieved by nearly 90% of the national school population overall (Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs, 1999). With respect to reading, …

Taking Your Values Shopping: Conversations About Values And Fulfilment: Dialogue And Engagement With Customer Stakeholders In The Body Shop, Western Australia, Patricia Morrigan, Megan Paull

Research outputs pre 2011

The specific contribution to this field of study is about customer 'engagement', their values and fulfilment. In this research we wanted to have a conversation with customers of The Body Shop Australia (TBS) about taking their values shopping. We found that TBS customers were remarkably clear and passionate about their own personal values and had no trouble expressing them in a conversation with us. Customer stakeholders in this research expressed values that were 'postmaterialist', concerned with the environmentally human choice and self -expression, gave importance to belonging among family and friends and showed a marked lack of trust in global …

Karstology And The Opening Of Caves During Motorway Construction In The Karst Region Of Slovenia, Martin Knez, Tadej Slabe Jan 2002

Karstology And The Opening Of Caves During Motorway Construction In The Karst Region Of Slovenia, Martin Knez, Tadej Slabe

International Journal of Speleology

The nature of karst makes constructing a roadway across karst areas a complex task, which is why karstologists take part in motorway construction across Slovenia’s karst. Working with planners, karstologists select the best route on the basis of preliminary research. Then they carry out regular karstological monitoring of the construction, to study newly discovered karst phenomena, mostly caves, and also help builders overcome the challenges of karst in a way that will preserve nature as much as possible. During the recent construction of a section of motorway, more than three hundred caves were encountered within a sixty-kilometre stretch of road. …
