Vigilance Or Tolerance?: Ambivalence And Attitude Accessibility In Response To Terrorist Threats, Julie Tison Jan 2002

Vigilance Or Tolerance?: Ambivalence And Attitude Accessibility In Response To Terrorist Threats, Julie Tison

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This research explored the cognitive processes underlying the Response Amplification Effect (RAE), which is ambivalent people's tendency to judge the object of their ambivalence (typically, a stigmatized other) more extremely than a comparable control target. Being in a state of ambivalence is known to be uncomfortable. This discomfort may be dealt with by implementing changes in the accessibility level of attitudinal elements. It is suggested that cognitions compatible with the side of the ambivalence made salient by the current situation will be super-activated and that incompatible elements will be sub-activated, thus leading to amplified reactions congruent with the current context. …

Art To Educate: A History Of Public Art In The New York City Public Schools, 1890–1976, Michele Cohen Jan 2002

Art To Educate: A History Of Public Art In The New York City Public Schools, 1890–1976, Michele Cohen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

"Art to Educate" chronicles a history of public art in the New York City public schools from the beginning until the passage of the City's Percent-for-Art Law in 1982. Its purpose is twofold: to bring to light public artworks in school buildings that are typically ignored in discussions of public art and to create a historical framework for understanding this collection.

To contextualize this collection, "Art to Educate" links public art in schools to school architecture and the Board of Education's school construction programs over the last century; to a consideration of educational theory and viewpoints in art education; and …

Progression Of Chronic Renal Disease In Several Animal Models: Possible Role Of Decreased Renal Nitric Oxide Production As A Primary Causative Factor., Aaron D. Erdely Jan 2002

Progression Of Chronic Renal Disease In Several Animal Models: Possible Role Of Decreased Renal Nitric Oxide Production As A Primary Causative Factor., Aaron D. Erdely

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Chronic renal disease is the progressive loss of renal function that can lead to end-stage renal disease. Recent studies from our laboratory have shown decreased total NO production in patients with renal disease. Animal models have shown decreased total and renal NO production and chronic NOS inhibition in otherwise healthy rats causes renal injury. The overall objective in this set of studies was to investigate intrarenal NO production in various models of CRD and determine if NO deficiency parallels, and perhaps causes renal injury. In the first study, we report that normal male SD rats exhibit age-dependent declines in total …

The Urotsa Cell Line As A Model Of Human Urothelium., Michael Ronald Rossi Jan 2002

The Urotsa Cell Line As A Model Of Human Urothelium., Michael Ronald Rossi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The UROtsa cell line is a unique model of human urothelium with considerable utility in toxicology-based research. UROtsa cells maintained in serum-free medium have several morphological features of transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder including a multilayered appearance and apically located umbrella-like cells that exhibit tight junctions. These cells also have a basal expression pattern of heat shock protein (hsp) and metallothionein (MT) genes similar to that observed in in situ urothelium. To characterize the functional heat shock and metallothionein stress response in UROtsa cells, confluent cultures grown in serum-free medium were treated with a variety of acute and chronic …

The Effects Of Age On The Chromosomal And Physiological Integrity Of Human Sperm., Eddie D. Sloter Jan 2002

The Effects Of Age On The Chromosomal And Physiological Integrity Of Human Sperm., Eddie D. Sloter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Integrated biomarkers of physiologic and genetic damage in sperm are needed to identify factors that affect male fertility and influence a father's risk of producing abnormal progeny. Offspring studies show a preferential paternal origin for heritable structural chromosomal abnormalities, presenting the need for methods to efficiently detect structural chromosomal abnormalities in human sperm. This dissertation breaks new conceptual ground toward the understanding of paternally transmitted genetic disease by adapting FISH technology to detect human sperm that carry chromosomal breaks and partial chromosomal duplications and deletions and by integrating state-of-the-art biomarkers of semen quality including computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). These sperm …

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Statement of the Task

In 1994, the central Africa nation of Rwanda experienced a large-scale genocide in which thousands of people were killed. Many Christians including Adventists participated in these mass killings. It is the task of this study to investigate (1) the historical causes of the genocide, (2) why Seventh-day Adventist Christians participated in the genocide, and (3) propose strategies for forgiveness and reconciliation from an Adventist perspective.

Methodology

The study is an historical and analytical investigation of the country and people of Rwanda from precolonial to post-independence time. It draws on the personal experience and direct interviews of …

Seminario Para Preparar Líderes Laicos Para El Evangelismo Urbano En El Noreste De México, Isidro Lopez Yanez Jan 2002

Seminario Para Preparar Líderes Laicos Para El Evangelismo Urbano En El Noreste De México, Isidro Lopez Yanez

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The Scriptures are clear about the order to evangelize every nation, tribe, language, and people. However, although the cities are part of these nations, the gospel has not been preached there as it has been in rural areas. This reality led to the study of urban evangelism and the preparation of a workshop for lay leaders in urban churches. The Bible presents several cases of urban evangelism, in both Testaments. In the Old Testament God showed his interest in the inhabitants of Niniveh, a pagan nation. In the New Testament, Paul evangelizes the important cities of the first century. Ellen …

Empowering And Equipping The Laity In The South Caribbean Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Ray Henderson Walker Jan 2002

Empowering And Equipping The Laity In The South Caribbean Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Ray Henderson Walker

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Some pastors in the South Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventists feel challenged by the ministry of the laity. One reason is the lack of a clear understanding of the biblical and theological perspectives on empowering and equipping the laity. Consequently, the potential of the laity is not fully utilized.

Method

Current literature was reviewed. This included books and articles on the principles, strategies, and programs which assist pastors to develop’ their empowering and equipping skills. A comparison was done between the ministry of the pastors and the laity in the South Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. An evaluation of …

Gore Wars, Alex Kozinski Jan 2002

Gore Wars, Alex Kozinski

Michigan Law Review

Unless you've been frozen in carbonite or are hopelessly gullible, it must have occurred to you at some point during the last three decades that environmental activists are exaggerating just a bit when they claim that, unless we dramatically change our way of life, we'll soon see the end of civilization as we know it. I'm not sure when these doomsday predictions got started - probably they go back to Malthus and beyond - but I first became aware of environmental Jeremiadism in college in the early 1970s, when tout-le-monde were reading a little book called The Limits to Growth. …

Toward A Jurisprudence Of Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michael Abramowicz Jan 2002

Toward A Jurisprudence Of Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michael Abramowicz

Michigan Law Review

In 1989, Cass Sunstein published an article entitled On the Costs and Benefits of Aggressive Judicial Review of Agency Action. Sunstein apparently meant the words "costs" and "benefits" in an informal sense, as the article considered the advantages and disadvantages of aggressive judicial review without pretense of explicit quantification. That article was several generations ago in Sunstein scholarship, almost 100 articles and over a dozen books. The central concerns of that article, however, are relevant to an assessment of Sunstein's latest book, whose title, The Cost-Benefit State, uses the words "costs" and "benefits" as labels for quantitative assessments of the …

Differential Reinforcement Of Fixed-Interval Interresponse Times: Effects On Choice., Tammy Renee Wade Jan 2002

Differential Reinforcement Of Fixed-Interval Interresponse Times: Effects On Choice., Tammy Renee Wade

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Eight rats were exposed to a concurrent-chains procedure. Half of the rats chose between a fixed-interval schedule that required low rates of responding in the paced terminal link and a simple fixed-interval schedule in the unpaced terminal link. The other half chose between a fixed-interval schedule that required high rates of responding and a simple fixed-interval schedule. Interresponse-time criteria were based on the percentiles of a baseline distribution of interresponse times obtained for each rat. The criteria increased in stringency across conditions. Consistent changes in response rates as the result of the interresponse-time criteria were not obtained. Therefore, preference between …

Landscaping The Lehigh: The Creation Of A Middle Industrial Landscape In Nineteenth-Century Pennsylvania., Augustine Nigro Jan 2002

Landscaping The Lehigh: The Creation Of A Middle Industrial Landscape In Nineteenth-Century Pennsylvania., Augustine Nigro

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Located sixty miles above Philadelphia, the Lehigh Valley follows the seventy-mile path of the Lehigh River as it descends from the Pocono Mountains south through the Blue Mountains into the rich agricultural lands of the Appalachian Great Valley. With anthracite deposits in its northern reaches, rich agricultural lands in its middle section, and commercial connections to Philadelphia at its mouth, nineteenth-century industrialists saw the river as a potential transportation route. From 1817 to 1829, the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company developed a system of slack water navigation along the river. With the opening of the channel in 1829, extractive industries …

Journey Down A Path Forgotten: The Stories My Foremothers Told, Thelma Young Jan 2002

Journey Down A Path Forgotten: The Stories My Foremothers Told, Thelma Young

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Just over two years ago, I began to document what life was like for my foremothers. My plan was to speak with as many women as I could, and to tape record our conversations. Before beginning my research, I read books about tape-recorded interviews, books about the history of Creoles in Louisiana, books about genealogy, and how to trace a family tree. I remember how organized I was; I read all the right books and knew all the right questions to ask. I bought just the right notepads and pens, and made sure I had extra batteries for my recorder, …

Baseline Study Of The Hooded Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia Minor): Its Utility As An Indicator Species Of Freshwater Wetland Habitats, Dawn Beaulac, Justin Walguamery, Ryan Meyer

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The hooded pitcher plant, Sarracenia minor, is an important member of bog and seepage savanna communities of the southeastern United States. Unfortunately these wetland communities have been damaged and are disappearing at an alarming rate. The goal of this study was to collect baseline data, which will be ultimately used to develop a model of the survivorship, growth rate, morphology and population dynamics of four populations of Sarracenia minor. The model will assess the effects of several environmental factors on changes in the morphology and population dynamics of S. minor on the UNF campus. Measurements on the survival, …
