Report Of Hanford Site Access, Hanford Action Of Oregon, Norm Buske
Report Of Hanford Site Access, Hanford Action Of Oregon, Norm Buske
Hanford Action of Oregon
Nine rooted vegetation samples were collected from Hanford on November 12, 2002, under a Hanford Site access agreement. Each of the 6 samples tested positive for at least one artificial radionuclide, probably of Hanford origin. These positive results show upward migration to the land surface vis deep-rooted plants that introduce the radioactivity into surface biota.
Hanford's strategy of cleaning up the topmost 15 feet of soil on the site is thus seen to rely on preclusion of deep-rooted, arid land vegetation. The "irrigated agriculture" and "rural residential" land use scenarios envision shallow-rooted plants that would not take buried waste up …

Distinct Neural Systems Subserve Person And Object Knowledge, Jason P. Mitchell, Todd F. Heatherton, C. Neil Macrae
Distinct Neural Systems Subserve Person And Object Knowledge, Jason P. Mitchell, Todd F. Heatherton, C. Neil Macrae
Dartmouth Scholarship
Studies using functional neuroimaging and patient populations have demonstrated that distinct brain regions subserve semantic knowledge for different classes of inanimate objects (e.g., tools, musical instruments, and houses). What this work has yet to consider, however, is how conceptual knowledge about people may be organized in the brain. In particular, is there a distinct functional neuroanatomy associated with person knowledge? By using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we measured neural activity while participants made semantic judgments about people or objects. A unique pattern of brain activity was associated with person judgments and included brain regions previously implicated in other …

Paramecium bursaria Chlorella virus type 1 (PBCV-1) is a very large, icosahedral virus containing an internal membrane enclosed within a glycoprotein coat consisting of pseudohexagonal arrays of trimeric capsomers. Each capsomer is composed of three molecules of the major capsid protein, Vp54, the 2.0-Å resolution structure of which is reported here. Four N-linked and two O-linked glycosylation sites were identified. The N-linked sites are associated with nonstandard amino acid motifs as a result of glycosylation by virus-encoded enzymes. Each monomer of the trimeric structure consists of two eight-stranded, antiparallel β-barrel, “jelly-roll” domains related by a pseudo-sixfold rotation. The fold of …

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
An active-matrix microfluidic platform employs thin film transistor active ("TFT") matrix liquid crystal display ~ technology to manipulate small samples of fluid for chemical, biochemical, or biological assays without moving parts, for example, using a two-dimensional matrix array of drive electrodes. The active-matrix microfluidic platform may employ existing active matrix 0 addressing schemes and/or commercial "off-the-shelf" animation software to program assay protocols. A feedback subsystem may > determine an actual location of a fluid in the microfluidic structure, and provides location information to for display, for example, on an active-matrix display, and/or to control movement of one or more fluid bodies …
