Antimicrobial Activity Of Plants Collected From Serpentine Outcrops In Sri Lanka, Nishanta Rajakaruna, Cory S. Harris, G. H. N. Towers
Antimicrobial Activity Of Plants Collected From Serpentine Outcrops In Sri Lanka, Nishanta Rajakaruna, Cory S. Harris, G. H. N. Towers
Biological Sciences
Thirty-two plant species collected from serpentine (ultramafic) soils in Sri Lanka were screened for antimicrobial properties against three Gram-positive and two Gramnegative bacteria, a non-acid fast bacterium, and the yeast, Candida albicans. Methanol extracts of 29 species belonging to 12 families were active against at least one microorganism. Activity against the Gram-positive and non-acid fast bacteria was common, however, only two taxa, Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae) and a species of Phyllanthus L. (Euphorbiaceae), were active against the Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. None of the species was active against the other Gram-negative bacterium, Escherichia coli, or C. albicans. Photoactivity was observed …
Modeling An Electrosensory Landscape: Behavioral And Morphological Optimization In Elasmobranch Prey Capture, Brandon R. Brown
Modeling An Electrosensory Landscape: Behavioral And Morphological Optimization In Elasmobranch Prey Capture, Brandon R. Brown
Physics and Astronomy
Most biological sensory systems benefit from multiple sensors. Elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) possess an array of electroreceptive organs that facilitate prey location, mate location and navigation. Here, the perceived electrosensory landscape for an elasmobranch approaching prey is mathematically modeled. The voltages that develop simultaneously in dozens of separate sensing organs are calculated using electrodynamics. These voltages lead directly to firing rate modifications in the primary afferent nerves. The canals connecting the sense organs to an elasmobranch's surface exhibit great variation of location and orientation. Here, the voltages arising in the sense organs are found to depend strongly on the …

Just Who Is The Person Having Ordinary Skill In The Art? Patent Law's Mysterious Personage, Joseph P. Meara
Just Who Is The Person Having Ordinary Skill In The Art? Patent Law's Mysterious Personage, Joseph P. Meara
Washington Law Review
Various patent validity and infringement questions are decided against the standard of the "person having ordinary skill in the art" (Phosita). For example, under 35 U.S.C. § 103(a), an invention must be nonobvious to one of ordinary skill in the art to be granted a patent. In this context, the Federal Circuit has set out six factors for measuring the level of skill of Phosita, yet the court has provided remarkably little guidance in their use and their relationship to nonobviousness. This situation has led to confusion and difficulties among courts trying to assess Phosita's skill. This Comment argues that …

Development And Validation Of Spatially Explicit Habitat Models For Cavity-Nesting Birds In Fishlake National Forest, Utah, Randall J. Schultz, Jr., Thomas C. Edwards, Jr., Gretchen G. Molsen, Tracey S. Frescino
Development And Validation Of Spatially Explicit Habitat Models For Cavity-Nesting Birds In Fishlake National Forest, Utah, Randall J. Schultz, Jr., Thomas C. Edwards, Jr., Gretchen G. Molsen, Tracey S. Frescino
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The ability of USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and analysis (FIA) generated spatial products to increase the predictive accuracy of spatially explicit, macroscale habitat models was examined for nest-site selection by cavity-nesting birds in Fishlake National Forest, Utah. One FIA-derived variable (percent basal area of aspen trees) was significant in the habitat model; however, the incorporation of FIA stand structure information did not increase model accuracy. Cavity-nesting birds respond strongly to nest-tree attributes unable to be modeled spatially for this study. Future modeling efforts should focus on larger taxa (e.g., ungulates) and richness/diversity studies.

The Roswell And Carlsbad Bureau Of Land Management Field Offices And Lincoln National Forest Endangered, Threatened And Sensitive Plant Field Guide, United States Bureau Of Land Management
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
This field guide has been prepared through a combined effort of the Roswell and Carlsbad Field Offices of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the Lincoln National Forest (LNF), and Ecosphere Environmental Services. This guide will help agency field personnel and public land users identify special status species found in the Roswell, Carlsbad, and Lincoln National Forest management areas.

Final General Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (Visitor Management And Resource Protection Plan) Zion National Park, Utah, U.S. Department Of The Interior, National Park Service
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The purpose of this conceptual plan is to describe the general path the National Park Service intends to follow in managing Zion National Park over the next 20 years. The approved plan will provide a framework for proactive decision making on such issues as visitor use, natural and cultural resource management, and park development, which will allow park managers to effectively address future problems and opportunities. In most cases, new development outside the park would take place to meet visitor needs.

Hiv/Aids In Context: The Culture Of Health Promotion Among Ndau Women In Rural Zimbabwe, Lynne Duffy
Hiv/Aids In Context: The Culture Of Health Promotion Among Ndau Women In Rural Zimbabwe, Lynne Duffy
Harold L. Hodgkinson Award for Outstanding Dissertation
This ethnographic study explored factors that facilitate or hinder women's participation in health promotion and HIV prevention in the Mt. Selinda area of rural Zimbabwe. Rates of HIV and AIDS in Zimbabwe are among the highest in the world and increasing most quickly among young females. A purposeful convenience sample of 11 Ndau women (key participants) was interviewed twice. Seventeen key informants and four focus groups offered further perspectives. The resulting narrative presents a picture of Ndau women's existence that is difficult and oppressive. Females are socialized early to be workers and mothers within a context of limited voice, subservience, …
