The Structural Status Of Bora Classifiers, David J. Weber Jan 2002

The Structural Status Of Bora Classifiers, David J. Weber

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

I claim that Bora classifiers have the structural status of (bound) nouns, based on facts like the following:

  • Some classifiers also occur as independent nouns (possibly with minor phonological differences).
  • Classifiers have the referential properties typical of nouns. Like typical nominals, they denote classes of objects and may refer to a member of the class they denote. They are never used to attribute properties to another referring expresssion.
  • Classifiers have the distribution typical of nouns: they may be a clausal subject, they may be modified by a relative clause, they may have a prepositional complement, and so forth.

And classifiers …

Fairy Tale Females : What Three Disney Classics Tell Us About Women, Debbie Mead Jan 2002

Fairy Tale Females : What Three Disney Classics Tell Us About Women, Debbie Mead

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

I examined the messages about women in the Disney movies Snow White, Cinderella, Pocahontas, setting them in historical context based on the date the movie was released. I explored the messages about beauty, relationships of women with other women, and relationships of women with men. I conclude with a Feminist Fairy Tale that I wrote using the characters and setting from Cinderella.

Anything Less Than A Man : Race, Manhood, And Insurgency In The Us Military, 1970-1974, Kevin Miller Jan 2002

Anything Less Than A Man : Race, Manhood, And Insurgency In The Us Military, 1970-1974, Kevin Miller

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The US Military generated a series of responses to racial conflicts that occurred in the early 1970s, including the uprisings aboard the Navy ships Kitty Hawk and Constellation. These responses constituted a counter-insurgent code, where the legitimacy of African American servicemen involved in uprisings was questioned. The social and behavioral sciences were also used by the military to universalize the claims made in these counter-insurgent documents to the entirety of the African American community. This paper studies how manhood was used in bother counter-insurgent prose and scientific studies to deny the agency of African American servicemen engaged in struggles against …

A Protocol For Mpa Data Collection And Comparison : Case Studies In Temperate And Tropical Oceans, Marnie Meyer

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Habitat degradation and depleting fisheries are a significant problem in today's oceans. Human impacts such as overfishing, destructive fishing practices, pollution and recreation have contributed to unhealthy marine ecosystems. These marine ecosystems are of great importance historically, biologically, and economically. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have been established to protect marine biodiversity, conduct scientific research and education, promote natural and cultural resources within a certain area, and reduce user conflict among stakeholders. In this paper, seven MPAs located throughout the world in temperate and tropical oceans are researched. A template spreadsheet was created for each MPA that provides detailed information including …

A Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Trichloroethylene Contamination In The Aquifers Under The Former Fort Ord Landfill, Kristy J. Meyer Jan 2002

A Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Trichloroethylene Contamination In The Aquifers Under The Former Fort Ord Landfill, Kristy J. Meyer

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a volatile organic compound the U.S. Army used extensively on the former Fort Ord prior to the post's closure. TCE is a probable human carcinogen and can cause a range of health effects depending on the quantity and duration of exposure. Fort Ord operated a group of landfills located on the post. The Army used these landfills for disposal of TCE-containing waste, and TCE subsequently leached into and contaminated the A-, 180-foot (Upper), and 180-foot restricted (Lower) aquifers. My project goals were to compile relevant information on the landfill and trichloroethylene, determine where the areas of highest …

Market Power With Dynamic Inventory Constraints: The Bias In Standard Measures, Lynn Hunnicutt, David Aadland Jan 2002

Market Power With Dynamic Inventory Constraints: The Bias In Standard Measures, Lynn Hunnicutt, David Aadland

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper incorporates inventory dynamics into an analysis of market power. Using a model in which each fIrm accounts for the effect of its current action on the current and future actions of itself and its competitors, we show that measures of market power that ignore inventory dynamics are biased. We then apply the model to the beef-packing industry using annual data on cattle stocks, slaughter and prices from 1933-1999. Our estimates suggest that static measures overestimate the amount of market power exerted by beef-packing fIrms.

United States Navy: Publications

Oral chloroquine is the treatment of choice for uncomplicated Plasmodium malariae infections worldwide. We did a prospective 28-day in-vivo assessment of the efficacy of chloroquine for treatment of P. malariae on Legundi Island in Lampung Bay, Sumatra, Indonesia. Of 28 patients, one had recurrent parasitaemia on day 28, and two had persistent parasitaemia to day 8. Whole-blood chloroquine and desethylchloroquine concentrations were at ordinarily effective levels (≥100 μg/L) on day 8 in both cases of persistent parasitaemia. These findings suggest that clinical resistance to chloroquine by P. malariae occurs in the Indonesian archipelago of southeast Asia.

Filling Preposition-Based Templates To Capture Information From Medical Abstracts, Gondy Leroy, Hsinchun Chen Jan 2002

Filling Preposition-Based Templates To Capture Information From Medical Abstracts, Gondy Leroy, Hsinchun Chen

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Due to the recent explosion of information in the biomedical field, it is hard for a single researcher to review the complex network involving genes, proteins, and interactions. We are currently building GeneScene, a toolkit that will assist researchers in reviewing existing literature, and report on the first phase in our development effort: extracting the relevant information from medical abstracts. We are developing a medical parser that extracts information, fills basic prepositional-based templates, and combines the templates to capture the underlying sentence logic. We tested our parser on 50 unseen abstracts and found that it extracted 246 templates with a …

Interpersonal And Pedagogical Communication: An Argument For Natural Communication Practices In The Romanian Efl Classroom, Dana-Anca Cehan Jan 2002

Interpersonal And Pedagogical Communication: An Argument For Natural Communication Practices In The Romanian Efl Classroom, Dana-Anca Cehan

MA TESOL Collection

The paper explores aspects of EFL classroom discourse in the Romanian context and pleads for the use and cultivation of natural communication practices and relevant language behavior in the classroom.

Viewing classroom discourse not only in pedagogical terms but also as a social event, the paper provides a dual perspective on the varied EFL classroom discourse strategies. Some characteristic classroom discourse features, such as its micro-functions, language switching and typical turn-taking are examined and compared to the characteristics of natural encounters. It is argued that the language teachers who ascribe to interpersonal goals in classroom discourse can enhance their students’ …

Applications Of The I-Thou-It Framework To Teaching English As A Foreign Language In Macedonia, Zora Busovska

MA TESOL Collection

This paper is based on David Hawkins’ framework of the I-Thou-It with an expanded and personalized interpretation. It aims at defining more precisely the roles of the I, the Thou, and the It in the author’s classroom. The paper also cites research related to this framework and compares the findings, differences and similarities of author’s research with those of other researchers. The paper examines each of the roles and the interplay that takes place between and among them.

The paper explains the advantages of the subject-centered classroom, i.e. dominance of the It. Thus, the emphasis of the paper is on …

Making Meaning: A Teacher’S Journey, Joanne Griffin Yorks Jan 2002

Making Meaning: A Teacher’S Journey, Joanne Griffin Yorks

MA TESOL Collection

This thesis shows how one teacher gained an increased understanding of the way she learns, discovered a theoretical support base for her learning style and found validation for her way of making meaning. Melding this new awareness with what was for her a new theoretical approach to teaching reading, reader-response theory, and then adapting the theory for the ESL classroom, she sought to offer her students opportunities similar to those she’d had to use reading to bring about new understandings of self and increased confidence in one’s ability to make meaning for oneself. The first chapter is an introduction to …

Second Language Acquisition In A Content-Based Web Building Course, Scott Degalis Jan 2002

Second Language Acquisition In A Content-Based Web Building Course, Scott Degalis

MA TESOL Collection

Content based courses have been shown to provide an effective environment for second language acquisition (Snow, Met and Genesee 1989). In this content based course students learn how to make a website in 48 hours of class time. In doing so, they improve their English in the skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking for an authentic need (Sterns 1990). Learners are motivated and enthusiastic about their projects, leading to more success in language acquisition (Gardner 1985). They are given an opportunity to express themselves creatively and artistically using the target language. Graduates leave with a published portfolio that …
