Perspectives On The Evolution Of Simulation, Richard E. Nance, Robert G. Sargent Jan 2002

Perspectives On The Evolution Of Simulation, Richard E. Nance, Robert G. Sargent

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Simulation is introduced in terms of its different forms and uses, but the focus on discrete event modeling for systems analysis is dominant as it has been during the evolution of the technique within operations research and the management sciences. This evolutionary trace of over almost fifty years notes the importance of bidirectional influences with computer science, probability and statistics, and mathematics. No area within the scope of operations research and the management sciences has been affected more by advances in computing technology than simulation. This assertion is affirmed in the review of progress in those technical areas that collectively …

Propagation And Culture Of Mussel Species Of Concern Annual Report For 2002, M. Christopher Barnhart

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

This report describes the second year of a 3-year project. The project objectives are to 1) augment existing populations and to establish new populations of mussel species of concern, 2) use molecular markers to permit genetic identification of the parentage and cohort of recovered juvenile mussels, and 3) test the susceptibility of juvenile mussels to predation by benthic invertebrates and to water quality factors such as low oxygen. The work is a cooperative effort among several agencies, including the Missouri Department of Conservation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Southwest Missouri State University. In 2002, this cooperative effort resulted in …

Transforming The Lecture-Hall Environment: The Fully Interactive Physics Lecture, David E. Meltzer, Kandiah Manivannan Jan 2002

Transforming The Lecture-Hall Environment: The Fully Interactive Physics Lecture, David E. Meltzer, Kandiah Manivannan

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Numerous reports suggest that learning gains in introductory university physics courses may be increased by “active-learning” instructional methods. These methods engender greater mental engagement and more extensive student–student and student–instructor interaction than does a typical lecture class. It is particularly challenging to transfer these methodologies to the large-enrollment lecture hall. We report on seven years of development and testing of a variant of Peer Instruction as pioneered by Mazur that aims at achieving virtually continuous instructor–student interaction through a “fully interactive” physics lecture. This method is most clearly distinguished by instructor–student dialogues that closely resemble one-on-one instruction. We present and …

Information And Communication Technologies In Classrooms : Perspectives From An International Study, John Ainley, Diana Banks, Marianne Fleming

2002 - Providing World-Class School Education

Many countries have envisaged a significant role for information and communications technologies (ICT) in their education systems. For example, in Australia one of the goals in the declaration of the Ministerial Council on Education, Training and Youth Affairs on national goals for schooling stated that students should be confident, creative and productive users of new technologies and understand the impact of those technologies on society. A national action plan, Learning in an Online World, has set three priority areas for development making available connections of sufficient bandwidth to allow schools to integrate online services into curriculum practice; providing effective pre-service …

The work should show problem-solving skills and demonstrate new conceptual outcomes.

A Comparative Analysis Of Wood Residues On Experimental Stone Tools And Early Stone Age Artifacts: A Koobi Fora Case Study, Christa Herrygers Jan 2002

A Comparative Analysis Of Wood Residues On Experimental Stone Tools And Early Stone Age Artifacts: A Koobi Fora Case Study, Christa Herrygers

McNair Scholars Journal

There have been recently reported plant residues on stone tools from the Okote Member, Koobi Fora, Kenya. No comparative microscopy, however, was available for more specific identification of the residues. Experimental research, using replica basalt tools, was conducted on six different trees native to the Koobi Fora region. Wood anatomy observed through reflected light microscopy (100-500x) of the experimental tools was compared to residues on the archaeological materials. Similar anatomical structures and patterning of residues were visible in both samples. This further supports recent evidence of woodworking by early hominids approximately 1.5 million years ago.

Soybean Glutaredoxin Gene Responds To Aluminum Toxicity In Soil Ii, Kisha D. Thomas-Bostic Jan 2002

Soybean Glutaredoxin Gene Responds To Aluminum Toxicity In Soil Ii, Kisha D. Thomas-Bostic

McNair Scholars Journal

Oxidizing agents are a normal product of aerobic metabolism and may also be encountered from environmental sources. Aluminum is one proposed source of environmental oxidative stress in plants, and is a major component of soils and an inhibitor of plant growth. Plant cells have evolved universal mechanisms to mediate oxidative stress including the enzyme glutaredoxin, which utilizes a disulfide oxidation-reduction mechanism to detoxify free radicals. A preliminary study suggested that the soybean glutaredoxin gene is expressed preferentially in roots and stems of soybean seedlings in response to toxic levels of Al in soils. To expand our understanding of our initial …

Disaster At The Colorado, Charles W. Baley

All USU Press Publications

This is a good book, worthy to join a host of other western trails studies... The work, largely narrative, is based on many primary sources and, equally important, it is readable. The armchair explorer will be satisfied, and there is enough trail topography for 'ruts nuts' and 'in the dirt' students. It is apparent that the author followed much of the trail himself and presents a good sense of place, putting the reader in the picture. —Stanley B. Kimball, Western Historical Quarterly Across north-central New Mexico and Arizona, along the line of Route 66, now Interstate 40, there first ran …

Nonmetro Recreation Counties: Their Identification And Rapid Growth, Kenneth M. Johnson, Calvin L. Beale Jan 2002

Nonmetro Recreation Counties: Their Identification And Rapid Growth, Kenneth M. Johnson, Calvin L. Beale

Sociology

More than 80 percent of the Nation’s 285 million people now reside in metropolitan areas. Many in this vast city and suburban population are attracted to the recreational opportunities and attractions of rural areas, such as beautiful scenery, lakes, mountains, forests, and resorts. For rural communities struggling to offset job losses from farming, mining, and manufacturing, capitalizing on the recreational appeal of an area fosters economic development, attracts new residents, and retains existing population. This article outlines a method to identify nonmetro counties with high recreation development. It then examines the linkage between such development and population change, and considers …

The Tragicomedy Of The Public Domain In Intellectual Property Law, Samuel Oddi Jan 2002

The Tragicomedy Of The Public Domain In Intellectual Property Law, Samuel Oddi

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

As the overall amount of protected and protectable subject matter expands, duration of protection grows longer, and overlap between types of protection increases, constituencies who rely upon intellectual subject matter as stimuli for the creative process grow concerned about incursions of the private domain into the public. This Article explores the relationship between the public domain as a source of sensory stimuli, the creative process as a generator of ideas, and the interaction among the public and private domains and the intellectual process - both in a "state of nature" and under the protections of an intellectual property system - …

Implementation Of A Modern Colorimetry System Into An Optical Thin Film Coating Facility, Jason Barrett Jan 2002

Implementation Of A Modern Colorimetry System Into An Optical Thin Film Coating Facility, Jason Barrett

Theses

Thin films are typically designed to transmit or reflect light based upon spectral performance. The films can be designed with very specific wavelength targets. For Applied Coatings’ customers, the wavelengths in question are typically in or around the visible range. Accurate measurements are required for customer satisfaction. An in-process quality check utilizing a scanning monochromator system has been used successfully for several years. The ability to receive support into the new millennium on the generic system that has been in place has driven a new project. The project, called the Scanning Monochromator Measurement System (SaMMS), is key to Applied Coatings, …

Efficacy Of Interactive Internet-Based Education In Structural Timber Design, Aaron B. Henson, Kenneth J. Fridley, David Pollock, C Jayne Brahler

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

While traditional teaching methods (e.g., real-time, synchronous lectures) have proven effective for training future engineers, the Internet provides an avenue to reinforce the material and augment student learning, comprehension, and retention of material. This paper presents the integration and assessment of a library of interactive instructional modules specifically for a senior-level undergraduate elective course in civil engineering. An ongoing, comprehensive assessment process was implemented in the fall 1999 semester. The results of this quantitative assessment indicate that the use of well designed and pedagogically sound Internet-based supplemental modules provide students with a better understanding of course material. However, when Internet-based …

Users coming to our library catalogs are more often looking for materials dealing with particular subjects rather than seeking specific titles or authors. Therefore, when we prepare our catalogs we must take special care to use terminology which will best retrieve this material. We must pay special attention to the "aboutness" of each item in order to select the most precise term.

Appropriate Use Of Clopidogrel, Cyrus R Kumana, Bernard Man-Yung Cheung, Ij Lauder Jan 2002

Appropriate Use Of Clopidogrel, Cyrus R Kumana, Bernard Man-Yung Cheung, Ij Lauder

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Clopidogrel (Plavix®) is an orally administered pro-drug, whose pharmacology and therapeutic role has been extensively reviewed in recent publications.1-5 In essence, it results in selective and irreversible antagonism of ADP-induced platelet aggregation. Such aggregation normally results in the surface expression of platelet glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa receptors, which facilitate fibrinogen binding as well as consequential further platelet aggregation – the final common pathway of vascular occlusion. Specific cytochrome P450 enzymes are thought to generate the responsible active metabolite (believed to persist transiently). However, dosage adjustment is not recommended in hepatic impairment (unless severe) and drug-drug interactions and co-administration with meals are …
