Fraud And Enforceability: Potential Implications For Federal Circuit Litigation, Michael Kim Jan 2002

Fraud And Enforceability: Potential Implications For Federal Circuit Litigation, Michael Kim

Duke Law & Technology Review

Should fraudulent litigation tactics and testimony affect the validity of underlying patents? What results are possible if the enforceability of a patent turns on the conduct of the applying party not only before the Patent and Trademark Office, but also before circuit courts? The author of the following article considers these questions in light of the recent Aptix Corp. case.

Series Scarabaeiformia Crowson 1960, Superfamily Scarabaeoidea Latreille 1802, Mary Liz Jameson, Brett C. Ratcliffe

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

The superfamily Scarabaeoidea is a large, diverse, cosmopolitan group of beetles. Scarabaeoids are adapted to most habitats, and they are fungivores, herbivores, necrophages, coprophages, saprophages, and some are carnivores. They are widely distributed, even living in the Arctic in animal burrows. Some scarabs exhibit parental care and sociality. Some are myrmecophilous, termitophilous, or ectoparasitic. Many possess extravagant horns, others are able to roll into a compact ball, and still others are highly armored for inquiline life. Some are agricultural pests that may destroy crops while others are used in the biological control of dung and dung flies. Scarabaeoids are popular …

Genetic Parameters And Responses Of Linear Type, Yield Traits, And Somatic Cell Scores To Divergent Selection For Predicted Transmitting Ability For Type In Holsteins, B. J. Degroot, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck, Erin L. Marotz Jan 2002

Genetic Parameters And Responses Of Linear Type, Yield Traits, And Somatic Cell Scores To Divergent Selection For Predicted Transmitting Ability For Type In Holsteins, B. J. Degroot, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck, Erin L. Marotz

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective was to examine the direct and correlated responses of linear type, yield traits, and somatic cell scores (SCS) to divergent selection for predicted transmitting ability for type (PTAT) in Holsteins, while maintaining selection for yield traits across lines. For four generations, one-half of the University of Nebraska research Holstein herd was bred to Holstein sires with PTAT -1.50 and the other half to sires with PTAT - 1.25, with nearly equal predicted transmitting abilities for yield traits for both groups. Estimates of genetic and residual correlations and heritabilities were obtained from REML estimates of (co)variance components. Model for …

Method For Enhancing Protective Cellular Responses To Genotoxic Stress In Skin, Elaine L. Jacobson, Myron Jacobson Jan 2002

Method For Enhancing Protective Cellular Responses To Genotoxic Stress In Skin, Elaine L. Jacobson, Myron Jacobson

Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

The present invention is directed to methods of using pro-NAD agents capable of enhancing the dermal and epidermal skin cell NAD content. These pro-NAD agents may be administered topically, orally, or parenterally to enhance DNA repair and other protective responses to DNA damage. The invention further relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising pro-NAD agents that effectively elevate intracellular NAD content. Finally, the invention relates to the method of using the pro-NAD agents to treat disorders such as sunburn and other skin deterioration that results from DNA damage in skin cells.

Materials And Methods Useful To Affect Growth And Development Of Lepidoptera Larvae, Douglas Lee Dahlman, Bruce Allen Webb, Indu B. Maiti

Kentucky Tobacco Research and Development Center Faculty Patents

The present invention provides materials and methods related to causing insect resistance in plants. Specifically, the present invention provides nucleic acid compounds which encode a teratocyte secreted protein (TSP) which is capable of causing inhibition of growth and developmental arrest in Lepidoptera larvae. Cells and plants (including plant parts, seeds, embryos, etc.) comprising the nucleic acid compounds are also within the scope of the present invention. The present invention also provides amino acid compounds encoded by the nucleic acid compounds of the present invention, as well as methods to induce larval developmental arrest, methods to produce the nucleic acid and …

Faculty Publications

Brucella melitensis is a facultative intracellular bacterial pathogen that causes abortion in goats and sheep and Malta fever in humans. The genome of B. melitensis strain 16M was sequenced and found to contain 3,294,935 bp distributed over two circular chromosomes of 2,117,144 bp and 1,177,787 bp encoding 3,197 ORFs. By using the bioinformatics suite ERGO, 2,487 (78%) ORFs were assigned functions. The origins of replication of the two chromosomes are similar to those of other α-proteobacteria. Housekeeping genes, including those involved in DNA replication, transcription, translation, core metabolism, and cell wall biosynthesis, are distributed on both chromosomes. Type I, II, …

Yungasicola Travassosi Gen. N., Sp. N. (Digenea: Dicrocoeliidae: Eurytrematinae) From Two Species Of Grass Mice Of The Genus Akodon Meyen (Rodentia: Muridae) From The Yungas Of Bolivia, Scott Lyell Gardner, Gerardo Perez-Ponce De Leon

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A new species and genus of digenetic trematode of the family Dicrocoeliidae is described from 2 species of grass mice, Akodon fumeus and Akodon mimus, both collected from an isolated area in the eastern part of the Andes mountains or Yungas of Bolivia. This species differs from all known dicrocoeliids in the unique disposition of the vitelline fields, the much less extensive uterus through the body of the worm (extending posteriad only just past the midline), and cecal branches that are generally conspicuous and lined with a thick layer of glandular epithelial tissue.
