Displacement Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 From Rumen Medium Containing Prebiotic Sugars, Albane De Vaux, Mark Morrison, Robert W. Hutkins Feb 2002

Displacement Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 From Rumen Medium Containing Prebiotic Sugars, Albane De Vaux, Mark Morrison, Robert W. Hutkins

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

A fed-batch, anaerobic culture system was developed to assess the behavior of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in a rumen-like environment. Fermentation medium consisted of either 50% (vol/vol) raw or sterile rumen fluid and 50% phosphate buffer. Additional rumen fluid was added twice per day, and samples were removed three times per day to simulate the exiting of digesta and microbes from the rumen environment under typical feeding regimens. With both types of medium, anaerobic and enteric bacteria reached 1010 and 104 cells/ml, respectively, and were maintained at these levels for at least 5 days. When a rifampin-resistant strain of …

Lasers As Non-Lethal Avian Repellents: Potential Applications In The Airport Environment, Bradley F. Blackwell, Glen E. Bernhardt, Jonathon D. Cepek, Richard A. Dolbeer Feb 2002

Lasers As Non-Lethal Avian Repellents: Potential Applications In The Airport Environment, Bradley F. Blackwell, Glen E. Bernhardt, Jonathon D. Cepek, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Research conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) indicates that low- to moderate-power, long-wavelength lasers (630- 650 nm) provide an effective means of dispersing some “problem” bird species under low-light conditions, while presenting no threat to the animal or the environment. The NWRC researchers tested the hypothesis that birds would avoid the beam or beam spot produced by a laser in low ambient light. In the format of controlled, replicated, 2-choice experiments with captive birds, Canada geese (Branta canadensis; 6 groups; 4 birds/group) exhibited extreme avoidance of laser beams over 80-minute periods, …

A Gene Capable Of Blocking Apoptosis Can Substitute For The Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Latency-Associated Transcript Gene And Restore Wild-Type Reactivation Levels, Guey-Chuen Perng, Barak Maguen, Ling Jin, Kevin R. Mott, Nelson Osorio, Susan M. Slanina, Ada Yukht, Homayon Ghiasi, Anthony B. Nesburn, Melissa Inman, Gail A. Henderson, Clinton J. Jones, Steven L. Wechsler

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

After ocular herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection, the virus travels up axons and establishes a lifelong latent infection in neurons of the trigeminal ganglia. LAT (latency-associated transcript), the only known viral gene abundantly transcribed during HSV-1 neuronal latency, is required for high levels of reactivation. The LAT function responsible for this reactivation phenotype is not known. Recently, we showed that LAT can block programmed cell death (apoptosis) in neurons of the trigeminal ganglion in vivo and in tissue culture cells in vitro (G.-C. Perng et al., Science 287:1500–1503, 2000; M. Inman et al., J. Virol. 75:3636–3646, 2001). Consequently, …

Visual Predators Select For Crypticity And Polymorphism In Virtual Prey, Alan B. Bond, Alan Kamil Feb 2002

Visual Predators Select For Crypticity And Polymorphism In Virtual Prey, Alan B. Bond, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Cryptically colored animals commonly occur in several distinct pattern variants. Such phenotypic diversity may be promoted by frequency-dependent predation, in which more abundant variants are attacked disproportionately often, but the hypothesis has never been explicitly tested. Here we report the first controlled experiment on the effects of visual predators on prey crypticity and phenotypic variance, in which blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) searched for digital moths on computer monitors. Moth phenotypes evolved via a genetic algorithm in which individuals detected by the jays were much less likely to reproduce. Jays often failed to detect atypical cryptic moths, confirming frequency- …

Dictyostelium Lvsb Mutants Model The Lysosomal Defects Associated With Chediak-Higashi Syndrome, Ed Harris, Ning Wang, Wei-I Wu, Alisha Weatherford, Arturo De Lozanne, James Cardelli Feb 2002

Dictyostelium Lvsb Mutants Model The Lysosomal Defects Associated With Chediak-Higashi Syndrome, Ed Harris, Ning Wang, Wei-I Wu, Alisha Weatherford, Arturo De Lozanne, James Cardelli

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Chediak-Higashi syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by mutations in a gene encoding a protein named LYST in humans (“lysosomal trafficking regulator”) or Beige in mice. A prominent feature of this disease is the accumulation of enlarged lysosome-related granules in a variety of cells. The genome of Dictyostelium discoideum contains six genes encoding proteins that are related to LYST/Beige in amino acid sequence, and disruption of one of these genes, lvsA (large volume sphere), results in profound defects in cytokinesis. To better understand the function of this family of proteins in membrane trafficking, we have analyzed mutants disrupted in lvsA, …

Tissue Factor. Biological Function And Clinical Significance, Bashir A. Lwaleed Feb 2002

Tissue Factor. Biological Function And Clinical Significance, Bashir A. Lwaleed

Saudi Medical Journal

Tissue Factor is the principal cellular initiator of normal blood coagulation. It is frequently encrypted in the plasma membrane of cells in contact with blood, but under certain pathological conditions endothelial cells, monocytes or macrophages may express tissue factor; and hence trigger coagulation activation. Aberrant expression of tissue factor by these cells is thought to be responsible for the thrombophilia found in septic shock, atherosclerosis and cancer. Tissue factor is produced by tumor-associated macrophages where it is believed to play an important role in tumor growth and dissemination. It may also be involved in other cellular processes such as intracellular …

Cd8+-T-Cell Immunity Against Toxoplasma Gondii Can Be Induced But Not Maintained In Mice Lacking Conventional Cd4+ T Cells, Lori Casciotti, Kenneth H. Ely, Martha E. Williams, Imtiaz A. Khan Feb 2002

Cd8+-T-Cell Immunity Against Toxoplasma Gondii Can Be Induced But Not Maintained In Mice Lacking Conventional Cd4+ T Cells, Lori Casciotti, Kenneth H. Ely, Martha E. Williams, Imtiaz A. Khan

Dartmouth Scholarship

T-cell immunity is critical for survival of hosts infected with Toxoplasma gondii. Among the cells in the T-cell population, CD8+ T cells are considered the major effector cells against this parasite. It is believed that CD4+ T cells may be crucial for induction of the CD8+-T-cell response against T. gondii. In the present study, CD4−/− mice were used to evaluate the role of conventional CD4+ T cells in the immune response against T. gondii infection. CD4−/− mice infected with T. gondii exhibited lower gamma interferon (IFN-γ) messages in the majority of their …

Development Of Analytical Systems And Monitoring Of Vocs Emissions During Polymer Processing, Qin Xiang Jan 2002

Development Of Analytical Systems And Monitoring Of Vocs Emissions During Polymer Processing, Qin Xiang

Dissertations

A method using direct flame ionization detector (FID) measurement was developed to study total volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions during thermal degradation of polymers. This was used to estimate organic emissions from both virgin polymer resins and commingled plastics. The effects of process parameters, i. e., temperature, heating rate and residence time, were also studied. Significant VOCs emissions were observed at normal processing temperatures, particularly from recycled polymers. Each polymer showed a distinct evolution pattern during its thermal degradation. Kinetics of VOCs emissions were also studied using a non-isothermal technique. The kinetic parameters were in agreement with data from the …

Modeling Hydrogen Diffusion For Solar Cell Passivation And Process Optimization, Yi Zhang Jan 2002

Modeling Hydrogen Diffusion For Solar Cell Passivation And Process Optimization, Yi Zhang

Dissertations

A diffusion model for hydrogen (H) in crystalline silicon was established which takes into account the charged state conversion, junction field, mobile traps, and complex formation and dissociation at dopant and trap sites. Carrier exchange among the various charged species is a "fast" process compared to the diffusion process. A numerical method was developed to solve the densities of various charged species from the Poisson's equation that involves shallow-level dopants and one "negative U" impurity, e.g., H. Time domain implicit method was adopted in finite difference scheme to solve the fully coupled equations.

Limiting versions of the model were applied …
