Review Essay: Reflections On Three Novels Of Carol Williams, Kristina Marcy Feb 2002

Review Essay: Reflections On Three Novels Of Carol Williams, Kristina Marcy

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The writer Jean Cocteau once descriped the fiction that he produced as "des mensonges vrais." If we agree that his description is apt, that indeed all fiction consists of true lies, then historical fiction might be considered a special genre , since it tries to blend true lies with genuine truths. Attempting to present simultaneously both the historical truth and a fictional narrative that brings that truth to life is a less straightforward task than it might seem, because the novelist and the historian must write at cross-purposes: the former is concerned with the story of individual lives, the latter …

Creating A Pathway To Multicultural Education In Urban Communities: Real-Life Experiences For Preservice Teachers, Margaret A. Moore-Hart Feb 2002

Creating A Pathway To Multicultural Education In Urban Communities: Real-Life Experiences For Preservice Teachers, Margaret A. Moore-Hart

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The classrooms within our nation are becoming rich tapestries, interwoven with people of diverse cultures and ethnic groups. In response to the evolving tapestries, many educators advocate the need to heighten preservice teachers' sensitivity to cultural issues so that they might apply this cultural knowledge within their teaching and learning. Using a reconstructionist approach, where preservice teachers become caring citizens who reach out to help culturally diverse children, is one way to address these issues. This manuscript describes an alternative tutoring program, where meaningful teaching and learning emerges within an urban community, and its' evaluation process. As a result of …

Relationship Of Effective To Census Size In Fluctuating Populations, Steven Kalinowski, Robin Waples Feb 2002

Relationship Of Effective To Census Size In Fluctuating Populations, Steven Kalinowski, Robin Waples

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The effective size of a population (Ne) rather than the census size (N) determines its rate of genetic drift. Knowing the ratio of effective to census size, Ne / N , is useful for estimating the effective size of a population from census data and for examining how different ecological factors influence effective size. Two different multigenerational ratios have been used in the literature based on either the arithmetic mean or the harmonic mean in the denominator. We clarify the interpretation and meaning of these ratios. The arithmetic mean Ne / N ratio …

Ministerial Policy Guideline No.10: The Abalone Managed Fishery In Western Australia, Department Of Fisheries Wa Feb 2002

Ministerial Policy Guideline No.10: The Abalone Managed Fishery In Western Australia, Department Of Fisheries Wa

Fisheries Administrative Guidelines

The commercial fishing of abalone has been regulated in one form or another since the early 1970s. In the present day, commercial fishing for abalone in Western Australian waters is principally regulated by the Abalone Management Plan 1992 which is taken to have been made, and is in force, under the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 ("the Act").

The regulatory regime established by the Abalone Management Plan 1992 ("the Plan") is based upon the principle that in each year a specific quantity of abalone (often referred to as 'quota') is determined to be the 'allowable catch' for that year. This …

Enhancing Poetry Writing Through Technology: The Yin And The Yang, Sherron Killingsworth Roberts, Denise Schmidt Feb 2002

Enhancing Poetry Writing Through Technology: The Yin And The Yang, Sherron Killingsworth Roberts, Denise Schmidt

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This paper describes the outcome of an innovative mentoring program at a midwestern university that paired technology faculty and methods faculty in order to form partnerships to facilitate the modeling of technology for preservice teachers. Both faculty members concluded that topics in seeming juxtaposition such as poetry and technology could provide successful models of integration. Prior applications within poetry instruction mostly included incorporating visuals or using electronic postings. These applications treat technology as an addition rather than a true partner reaching into the actual writing of poetry. Conversely, this paper describes the creation of useful applications for enhancing poetry writing …

Book Review - Schooling- The Symbolic Animal: Social And Cultural Dimensions Of Education, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This is an excellent book that brings together under one cover many of the most important ideas of the fields of anthropology and qualitative sociology of education or, to use the editor Bradley Levinson's more expansive phrase, of "the interpretive social sciences" (p. 1). The book is divided into five sections, plus an introduction and an afterword. Each section begins with an introductory essay authored by the section editor. Bradley Levinson is the author of the book's introduction and editor of the first section ("Section I: The Symbolic Animal: Foundations of Education in Cultural Transmission and Acquisition"). Section 11, "Culture, …

Assessing The Legitimacy Of Governmental Regulation Of Modern Speech Aimed At Social Reform: The Importance Of Hindsight And Causation, Kenneth J. Brown Feb 2002

Assessing The Legitimacy Of Governmental Regulation Of Modern Speech Aimed At Social Reform: The Importance Of Hindsight And Causation, Kenneth J. Brown

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

When governmental regulation or punishment of speech occurs subsequent to the speech itself, such regulation is conducted with the benefit of hindsight. This is important because hindsight enables us to discern whether the expression in question has caused any legally cognizable harm. When speech is responsible for such a harm, its punishment is justfied by this causal connection. Yet conversely, when we know that speech is consequence-free, its ex post punishment is conceptually indefensible. In the first part of this article, Mr. Brown criticizes the imminent lawless action standard articulated in Brandenburg v. Ohio for failing to embrace fully this …

Comparative Analysis Of Pollution In Farmington Bay And The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy M. Marcarelli, Cameron Christison, Joel Moore, Donovan Gross, Sophia Bates, Sara Kircher Feb 2002

Comparative Analysis Of Pollution In Farmington Bay And The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy M. Marcarelli, Cameron Christison, Joel Moore, Donovan Gross, Sophia Bates, Sara Kircher

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Farmington Bay covers 94 mi2 (260 km2) in the SW comer of the Great Salt Lake, and is essentially a separate lake because it is enclosed by Antelope Island and a causeway leading to the island from the mainland. The bay has received wastes from the adjoining Salt Lake City metropolitan area for decades. Because of water quality concerns for Farmington 8ay, the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory class at Utah State University studied the bay and a nearby control site (Bridger Bay) in the Great Salt Lake during the fall of 2001. Field sampling and laboratory experiments, as well as other …
