Asante Indigenous Goldsmithing:The Impact Of Contemporary Culture On Akan Jewelry, Dana Wilson Apr 2002

Asante Indigenous Goldsmithing:The Impact Of Contemporary Culture On Akan Jewelry, Dana Wilson

African Diaspora ISPs

World famous for their gold ornaments, I chose to examine the evolution of Akan jewelry production in "Asante Indigenous Goldsmithing: The Impact of Contemporary Culture on Akan Jewelry". It was through an apprenticeship with local indigenous goldsmith and several interviews that I was able to gain insight into not only the techniques and tools used, but the discrepancies that devide those who work in the traditional manner from goldsmiths who incorporate more contemporary machinery. After three weeks of field research in Kumase, I realized it is a very ambigous line that separates the two.Further literary research encouraged me to write …

The Improvement Of Water And Water-Dependent Resources Under The Great Lakes Charter Annex, Sandi Zellmer, David Gecas, Kori Anne Mann

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The Governors of 8 states and Premiers of 2 Canadian provinces signed a supplementary agreement to the Great Lakes Charter on June 18, 2001. This agreement, known as the Annex or Annex 2001, established principles for a new decision making framework for reviewing proposed withdrawals of Great Lakes water. Annex 2001 is the first step toward a set of binding water management agreements to be negotiated by June 2004. Directive 3 of the Annex provides that proposals to withdraw water will not be approved unless they will produce "an improvement to the waters and water dependent natural resources of the …

The Web Magazine

The Web Magazine focuses on alumni news and campus events from Gardner-Webb College; now Gardner-Webb University. In this issue of The Web, the GWU Centennial is recognized and will occur in 2005. Traditions are a huge defining factor at GWU, even from the beginning. It was a Baptist idea from the very start. This issue also covers the entire history of the college from its start to where it is now. Carolyn Lewis Duncan (class of 1972) reflects her memories of time on campus. Many of the faculty members are mentioned such as Dr. Jim Lawrence and Dr. Matt Theado. …

Plasma And Testicular Testosterone Levels, Volume Density And Number Of Leydig Cells And Spermatogenic Efficiency Of Rabbits, A.C.S. Castro, William E. Berndtson, F. M. Cardoso Apr 2002

Plasma And Testicular Testosterone Levels, Volume Density And Number Of Leydig Cells And Spermatogenic Efficiency Of Rabbits, A.C.S. Castro, William E. Berndtson, F. M. Cardoso

Biological Sciences

Plasma and tissue testosterone concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay in 12 eight-month-old sexually mature New Zealand White rabbits and evaluated for possible associations with spermatogenic efficiency as well as with volume density and number of Leydig cells. Testicular tissue was processed histologically and histometry was performed in order to quantify germ cells, Sertoli cells and Leydig cells. Spermatogenic efficiency, reported as the ratios among germ cells (spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes and round spermatids) and by the ratio of germ cells to Sertoli cells, was not associated with testosterone levels. However, Leydig cell parameters such as number of Leydig cells per gram …

Household Product Disposal Guide, Cooperative Extension

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Use This Guide to Help Prevent Household Hazardous Wastes. The products from a single home seem insignificant, but when thousands of homes use similar products and dispose of them down the drain or in the landfill, the combined effect becomes a major concern due to ground and surface water contamination. Soil and air also may be adversely affected.

Murine Epidermal Cell Antigen (Skn)-Directed Autoimmunity Induced By Transfer Of Cd4+ T Cells, Susan H. Jackman, Shivaleela Keerthy, Giselle Perry Apr 2002

Murine Epidermal Cell Antigen (Skn)-Directed Autoimmunity Induced By Transfer Of Cd4+ T Cells, Susan H. Jackman, Shivaleela Keerthy, Giselle Perry

Biochemistry and Microbiology

While pathogenic T cells have been identified for several diseases with epithelial cell damage, an autoimmune T cell-mediated response targeted against a known keratinocyte antigen has not been reported. Previously we described an autoimmune response directed to the mouse epidermal cell antigens, Skn. For our murine model, primed Skn-immune lymphocytes are adoptively transferred to recipients, which develop lesions at the site of mild skin trauma. In this study we investigated the nature of the autoimmune component of the Skn response. A time-course study demonstrated a relationship between the number of primed Sknimmune cells injected and the severity of skin lesions …

Direct And Indirect Excitation Of Laterodorsal Tegmental Neurons By Hypocretin/Orexin Peptides: Implications For Wakefulness And Narcolepsy, Sophie Burlet, Christopher Tyler, Christopher S. Leonard Apr 2002

Direct And Indirect Excitation Of Laterodorsal Tegmental Neurons By Hypocretin/Orexin Peptides: Implications For Wakefulness And Narcolepsy, Sophie Burlet, Christopher Tyler, Christopher S. Leonard

NYMC Faculty Publications

Compelling evidence links the recently discovered hypothalamic peptides Hypocretin/Orexin (Hcrt/Orx) to rapid eye movement sleep (REM) control and the sleep disorder narcolepsy, yet how they influence sleep-related systems is not well understood. We investigated the action of Hcrt/Orx on mesopontine cholinergic (MPCh) neurons of the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDT), a target group whose function is altered in canine narcolepsy and appears pivotal for normal REM and wakefulness. Extracellular recordings from mouse brainstem slices revealed that Hcrt/Orx evoked prolonged firing of LDT neurons. Whole-cell recordings revealed that Hcrt/Orx had actions on both presynaptic neurons and at postsynaptic sites. Hcrt/Orx produced an …

Update On Therapeutic Myocardial Angiogenesis, Hung-Fat Tse, Chu-Pak Lau Apr 2002

Update On Therapeutic Myocardial Angiogenesis, Hung-Fat Tse, Chu-Pak Lau

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Recent advances in the understanding of the mechanisms of neovascularization and the identification of potent angiogenic growth factors have led to the development of therapeutic angiogenesis for treatment of severe ischemic heart disease. Current clinical studies on therapeutic myocardial angiogenesis generally involved the delivery of recombinant protein or gene of the angiogenic growth factors using various different approaches. Although the initial clinical results are encouraging, the potential side effects of these potent angiogenic growth factors remain a major concern. Large-scale, randomized and placebo control studies will be required to demonstrate the clinical benefit of this novel therapeutic treatment of ischemic …

Vietnam’S Rice Economy: Developments And Prospects, Kenneth B. Young, Eric J. Wailes, Gail L. Cramer, Nguyen Tri Khiem Apr 2002

Vietnam’S Rice Economy: Developments And Prospects, Kenneth B. Young, Eric J. Wailes, Gail L. Cramer, Nguyen Tri Khiem

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

Vietnam shifted rapidly from being a net rice importer prior to 1987 to become the second largest world rice exporter by 1995. Net rice exports have leveled off at about 3.8 million metric tons from 1997 to 1999. The world rice price has dropped dramatically in 2000 to barely cover the rice production cost in Vietnam, and net rice exports are expected to fall to 3.4 million mt because of the poor import demand in 2000. This report reviews the policy adjustments that led to the rapid growth in rice production and evaluates the prospects for Vietnam to continue as …
