Cold Acclimation Strategy Is Highly Variable Among The Sunfishes (Centrarchidae), Peter J. Lavrentyev, Deidra R. Tschantz, Elizabeth L. Crockett
Biology Faculty Research
We tested the hypothesis that the physiological strategy for acclimating to low body temperature is similar among closely related fish. Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus), bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus), black crappie (Pomonix nigromaculatus), and white crappie (Pomonix annularis), all members of the family Centrarchidae, were acclimated to 5° and 25°C. Morphometric variables (total mass, total length, organ masses) and enzyme activities (hexokinase; lactate dehydrogenase; and cytochrome oxidase in heart, liver, and muscle) were measured in 5°C- and 25°C-acclimated fish at 5° and 25°C assay temperatures. Each species displayed a distinct physiological response to cold acclimation that differed …
Dissuasion As A Strategic Concept, Richard L. Kugler
Dissuasion As A Strategic Concept, Richard L. Kugler
Strategic Forums
Dissuasion as a Strategic Concept examines how U.S. defense and foreign policy can go beyond traditional deterrence to prevent adversaries from choosing conflict or escalation in the first place. The paper defines dissuasion as the strategic practice of discouraging adversaries from contemplating harmful behavior by shaping their expectations and perceived costs of action. The author explores how dissuasion complements deterrence and assurance strategies, particularly in complex regional contexts such as the Korean Peninsula, where multiple actors’ perceptions and incentives interact. Drawing on historical cases and theory, the paper offers insights into designing policies that reduce the likelihood of miscalculation and …

Computer-Based Modules for Engineering Instruction Must Be Concise, Flexible, Educational and Engaging in Order to Effectively Supplement Traditional Classroom Teaching Tools. a Computer Example that Takes More Time Than a Chalkboard Presentation is Not Likely to Be Useful in Today's Engineering Classroom. Flexible Navigation is Necessary So that the Instructor Can Quickly and Easily Respond to Student Questions. Useful Modules Must Also Improve Problem-Solving Skills or Clarify Troublesome Concepts in Order to Be Considered Worthy of Inclusion in the Limited Class Time Available. Finally, and Perhaps Most Importantly, Effective Computer-Based Modules Must Meet the Challenge of Holding the Student's Attention. …

Students Recall More Central Ideas When They Learn from a Knowledge Map Than When They Learn from Text and Those with Low Verbal Ability or Low Prior Knowledge Often Benefit the Most. the Use of Knowledge Maps Also Appears to Amplify the Benefits Associated with Scripted Cooperation. Learning from Maps is Enhanced by Active Processing Strategies Such as Summarization …
Determining The Mobility Of Metals Through Coal Combustion Byproducts In Surface Impoundments By Analyzing Leachate From Modified Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity Tests, Michael Joseph Trofinoff
Determining The Mobility Of Metals Through Coal Combustion Byproducts In Surface Impoundments By Analyzing Leachate From Modified Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity Tests, Michael Joseph Trofinoff
Theses and Dissertations
Surface impoundments are used extensively throughout the utility industry to store the combustion byproducts, or ash, from coal-fired generating facilities. Following combustion, the metals, naturally contained within coal at low concentrations, may become highly concentrated within the ash. These combustion byproducts are then piped out in a water-ash slurry to the surface impoundments where the ash weathers to- a clay- like substance after approximately 10 years. It is feared that these metals that are contained within the ash could possibly leach into the ground and contaminate the local groundwater. Utilizing a open column percolation test to determine the hydraulic conductivity …
Pornography And Land Use Planning, Christine Oosterhous
Pornography And Land Use Planning, Christine Oosterhous
Master's Projects
The major considerations on this subject for a court are whether any limitation on adult uses is based on content, or whether it is based on the secondary effects of these uses on the surrounding community. There have been a number of instances in the last years in which federal courts have found adult use zoning restrictions to be acceptable, if they have been motivated by a desire to protect neighborhood quality, as contrasted with impermissible desire to ban the message purveyed by the adult uses.
For jurisdictions, zoning is the first line of defense in regulating sexually oriented uses. …

California has historically been a state prone to natural disasters. The inhabitants of this state must contend with earthquakes, floods, droughts and wildfires on an almost daily basis. Not only do these disasters usually destroy property and resources; with costs reaching into the billions of dollars, but they are often deadly. Regardless of the constant threat of these disasters, people continue to build their homes here, seeking the many amenities that the state offers. Included in such qualities are the year round beautiful climate, the accessibility to the outdoors, natural resources and the golden opportunity to make it big in …

I view my work as a look into dreams, thoughts, ideas. My themes are universal, but their source derives from my specific surroundings, the Rio Grande Valley. They come out from the rows in the fields where we grow our foods, in the skies, and from the sun that warms our blood. Themes come from what I see as well as what I imagine, living and not. I consider myself a farmer, but now I harvest ideas and concepts, and have my paintings and drawings to show for my labor. I believe one must contribute to the land before one …

The purpose of this study is 1) to examine the presence of the antigen in serum by employing a newly developed ELISA immunoassay that quantifies the total antigen and bound antigen (antigen-antibody complex) using polyclonal chicken antibodies directed against an IgM-binding epitope of the new antigen, and 2) to determine the location of the antigen in carcinoma and normal cells. Sera from healthy volunteers (n = 147) and cancer patients (n = 26) were compared for both bound and total antigen concentrations using the new ELISA. Healthy volunteers were subdivided into three groups: those with a personal history of cancer …
Contrasting Patterns Of Divergence In Quantitative Traits And Neutral Dna Markers: Analysis Of Clinal Variation, Jay F. Storz
Contrasting Patterns Of Divergence In Quantitative Traits And Neutral Dna Markers: Analysis Of Clinal Variation, Jay F. Storz
Jay F. Storz Publications
Clinal variation in quantitative traits is often attributed to the effects of spatially varying selection. However, identical patterns can be produced by the interplay between purely stochastic processes (i.e. drift in combination with spatially restricted gene flow). One means of distinguishing between adaptive and nonadaptive causes of geographical variation is to compare relative levels of between population divergence in quantitative traits and neutral DNA markers. Such comparisons can be used to test whether levels of trait divergence attributable to additive genetic effects (as measured by QST) exceed null expectations based on the level of divergence at neutral marker …

Nebraska's Sandhill Crane Populations, Past, Present And Future, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
Although the spring concentrations of Sandhill Cranes in Nebraska's Platte Valley are now an avian phenomenon known nationwide, a general appreciation and inventory of this unique concentration of birds has only been attempted in the last few decades. I am often asked how long this largest of all crane concentrations has been occurring in the Platte Valley, and why it has developed only there. Here I will try to summarize the little-known history of this marvelous assemblage, but not dwell on the ecological reasons for it. The latter are now generally well understood to revolve around abundant spring food supplies …

Travel Epidemiology. Who Perspective, Hussein A. Gezairy
Saudi Medical Journal
International travel is undertaken by large, and ever increasing numbers of people for professional, social, recreational and humanitarian purposes, and this upward trend looks set to continue. Travelers are exposed to a variety of health risks of the unfamiliar environment of the visited area. The risk of exposure is determined by destination, duration of the visit, purpose of the visit, behavior of the traveler and underlying physical and biological status of the traveler. However, most risks can be minimized by suitable precautions taken before, during and after travel. Travelers can themselves, also, easily introduce any infectious agents they may harbor …

The sustainable development of any region depends on the availability of water resources. In arid and semi-arid regions, the shortage in freshwater resources constitutes the major constraint against the expansion in agricultural and industrial activities. Therefore, every possible effort should be made to assess, develop and sustain the limited freshwater water resource in such regions.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is located in an arid region, where the climate is harsh and the renewable freshwater resources are very limited. Despite the severe shortage in water resources, water is misused and sometimes wasted. The per capita daily consumption in the UAE …

The rates of colorectal carcinoma have increased 2-fold over the last 3 decades. It has long been known that dietary factors play a role in the risk of this disease, although studies in Asian populations, with their unique dietary intake, have been few.METHODS. The authors conducted a population-based case-control study that included 121 Chinese patients with colorectal carcinoma and 222 healthy control participants who provided information on usual intake of major food groups in the preceding …
Using Research Methods To Evaluate Your Extension Program, Keith G. Diem
Using Research Methods To Evaluate Your Extension Program, Keith G. Diem
Journal of Extension
For Extension practitioners, research is typically considered an ominous practice reserved for ivory tower academics, and evaluation is nearly as mysterious. Therefore, Extension agents often shy away from using scientific methods to evaluate educational programs. However, research is simply a methodical way of finding answers to questions used to discover new information or prove scientific theories. And research methods can also be useful to effectively evaluate an educational program or its participants in the most objective way. This article presents an overview of research methods that Extension agents can use in program evaluation. It includes a bibliography of helpful resources.

Training 4-H Teen Facilitators In Inquiry-Based Science Methods: The Evaluation Of A "Step-Up" Incremental Training Model, Martin H. Smith, Richard P. Enfield
Journal of Extension
A "Step-Up" Incremental Training Model for teen curriculum facilitators implementing inquiry-based science activities was designed and evaluated. This model involves a sequence of three training workshops that alternate with curriculum implementations. The model was evaluated using data from focus group interviews, surveys, and direct observations. Key elements in the model's design include: workshop organization; introductory session; multiple increments; effective modeling and practice; "safe" environment for reflection and review. The teens trained during the development of this model were effective in implementing curriculum activities with young children. The authors believe that this method would be transferable to other teen-led Extension programs.
