Strangers In The Commons: Collective Action In Aging Policy, R. Robertson Hilton
Strangers In The Commons: Collective Action In Aging Policy, R. Robertson Hilton
Student Scholarship
This paper illuminates the urgent discourse on the future of long-term care for needy seniors. The aging of the “boomers” and the prospect of budget deficits animate this discourse. Little research has focused on this discourse since the end of the prosperity of the 1990’s. During the first three months of 2003, I studied a formally organized group of recognized leaders of the non-profit long-term care community of Northeast Ohio. My methodology enabled me to discern through an inductive process the underlying influences that drive collective action for new aging policy. These influences emerge despite the notable lack of a …

Ocelot Distribution In The Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Kevin James Shinn
Ocelot Distribution In The Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Kevin James Shinn
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Weaver hair-snaring surveys were conducted at 125 sites on 27 Refuge tracts to obtain information about the distribution and population status of the endangered ocelot ( Leopardus pardalis ) in the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The surveys resulted in 33.6% of the pads “hit”, including 8 by ocelot and 29 by bobcat. There was no significant difference in the number of ocelot hits between warm and cool seasons or between the sexes. Preferred habitat consists of dense thornscrub brush. Four species, snake-eyes, granjeno, honey mesquite, and colima comprise 50% or more of the total cover at each …
The Art And Myth Of The Coyote And Related Folk Tales From The South Texas And Northern Mexican Border, Esau Rubio Pena
The Art And Myth Of The Coyote And Related Folk Tales From The South Texas And Northern Mexican Border, Esau Rubio Pena
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This paper will examine the relationship between the myth of the coyote and the folk tales that are indigenous to the South Texas/Mexican border. Moreover, I intend to explore several common folk tales pertaining to the coyote and how I have chosen to synthesize them into my artwork. In my paintings, I have become cognizance that the coyote possesses many identities. In one instance, the coyote can appear as a wild animal, a rogue of nature; however, in another instance I have learned that the coyote is a highly adaptive creature capable of being a protector of the natural world. …

Effect Of Environmental Heat Stress On Embryonic Bone Development, Noura Musaed Al-Menhali
Theses
Birth defects are anatomical abnormalities present at birth. The causes of birth defects are genetic, environmental and multifactorial inheritance factors. The main objective of the thesis is to determine the effects of maternal heat stress during rat pregnancy on fetal axial skeletal development and to explore some of the possible maternal and placental responses to heat stress.
Experiment one: A group of 40 Wistar pregnant rats were randomly assigned to two treatment groups, a control group (non-stressed, n = 10) heat at 21°C and a heat-stressed group kept at 41 °C (n = 30) for one hour on day 9 …
The Improvement Of Some Natural Organic Fertilizers Using Beneficial Microorganisms, Mariam Naseeb Al Hameeri
The Improvement Of Some Natural Organic Fertilizers Using Beneficial Microorganisms, Mariam Naseeb Al Hameeri
Theses
The random uses of inorganic fertilizers in the UAE farms generate a serious threat about polluting the soil, and the environment. This motivates some researchers to find suitable alternatives, which can give a better crop yield, and at the same time become friendly to the environment.
The present study was performed to find environmentally friendly biological fertilizers to substitute or reduce the application of inorganic fertilizers. Actinomycetes, which are known to produce plant growth regulators (PGRs) were isolated from UAE soils. A total of fifty-seven actinomycetes were isolated from a cucumber rhizosphere soil at a farm in AI-Ain city. Out …
Protective Care: Mothering A Child Dependent On Parenteral Nutrition, Lorie H. Judson Phd, Mn, Rn
Protective Care: Mothering A Child Dependent On Parenteral Nutrition, Lorie H. Judson Phd, Mn, Rn
Dissertations
Home care of technology-dependent infants and children has become an accepted and expected consequence of higher survival rates among critically ill newborns and children who develop chronic illnesses. One of the high-tech modalities which foster dependence of these infants and children is parenteral nutrition. Parenteral nutrition, also called total parenteral nutrition (TPN), supplies life-sustaining nutrients through a central venous catheter and requires the use of machinery to pump this fluid directly into the bloodstream. Due to the tremendous cost of prolonged hospitalization for these children, and the deleterious effects to the child, home care is considered an obvious and viable …

The Disappearing Settlement: The Contractual Regulation Of Smith & Wesson Firearms, Charles C. Sipos
Vanderbilt Law Review
Consider three transactions: (1) federal legislation passed by Congress; (2) an order of judgment in a private lawsuit; and (3) a contractual arrangement between private parties. If one were asked to rank those transactions in order of the potential impact they should have on public and social policy, they would probably appear in the order that they are listed. Intuition, experience, and plain common sense might likely lead to the conclusion that legislation has the greatest impact on public policy, private agreements the least,' and final judgments in litigation somewhere in between. Democratic principles provide very good reasons for this …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) are an evolving genre of graduate student research that is gaining widespread acceptance among universities in the international community. ETDs are also beginning to diffuse slowly among American universities; however, a number of issues continue to work against more rapid adoption among intitutions in the United States. This dissertation examines ETDs as an evolving electronic research genre by (1) historicizing the situated development of its predecessor, the traditional print dissertation, in nineteenth century German and American Universities; (2) reporting on the current state of the Networked Digital Library of Electronic Theses and Dissertations, an initiative …

Uncertainty Of Exploitation Estimates Made From Tag Returns, L.E. Miranda, R.E. Brock, Brian S. Dorr
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Over 6,000 crappies Pomoxis spp. were tagged in five water bodies to estimate exploitation rates by anglers. Exploitation rates were computed as the percentage of tags returned after adjustment for three sources of uncertainty: post-release mortality due to the tagging process, tag loss, and the reporting rate of tagged fish. Confidence intervals around exploitation rates were estimated by re-sampling from the probability distributions of tagging mortality, tag loss, and reporting rate. Estimates of exploitation rates ranged from 17% to 54% among the five study systems. Uncertainty around estimates of tagging mortality, tag loss, and reporting resulted in 90% confidence intervals …
