Facts: In the context of IDF operations against the terrorist infrastructure in areas of the Palestinian Authority (“Operation Defensive Wall”), thousands of suspects were detained. Due to overcrowding, some of these petitioners were transferred to the Kziot detention facility in the Negev region. Most of the detainees were detained pursuant to administrative detention orders. This petition concerns the detention conditions of these detainees.
Held: The Supreme Court held that the presumption of innocence should be applied to the detainees, as they are being held under administrative detention orders, and have neither been tried nor convicted. The Court further held that …

Novel synthases and the corresponding nucleic acids encoding such synthases are disclosed herein. Such synthases possess an active site pocket that includes key amino acid residues that are modified to generate desired terpenoid reaction intermediates and products. Synthase modifications are designed based on, e.g., the three-dimensional coordinates of tobacco 5-epi-aristolochene synthase with or without a substrate bound in the active site.
Canenermiut Lifeways And Worldview And Western Fish And Wildlife Management, Carl T. Jack
Canenermiut Lifeways And Worldview And Western Fish And Wildlife Management, Carl T. Jack
Rural Development
The Canenermiut inter-generational worldview embodies the proper use and conservation of the resources necessary to sustain life from time immemorial. The classical Yupiaq conservation ethics in the utilization of subsistence resources are well established and practiced to this day by Canenermiut that is geared to the survival of their culture and community. When western fish and wildlife managers promulgate regulations from urban areas of Alaska on the taking of subsistence resources in rural Alaska they often find out that rural residents such as the Canenermiut ... are unwilling to follow the regulations. Caneneq is a coastal area between Kusquqvak (Kuskokwim) …
Determining The Impacts Of Storage Practice And Treatment Technology On The Formation Of Disinfection Byproducts, Greta Myerchin Mcgee
Determining The Impacts Of Storage Practice And Treatment Technology On The Formation Of Disinfection Byproducts, Greta Myerchin Mcgee
Theses (Unassigned)
Disinfection byproducts (DBP) are formed during the reaction of chemical disinfectants with natural organic material (NOM). DBPs are potential carcinogens and are regulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEP A) under the Disinfectant/DBP (D/DBP) rule. High concentrations of NOM in drinking water sources used by Alaska's communities often result in the formation of DBPs during treatment. Since surface water sources in the Arctic are frozen for 6-9 months of the year, communities are often forced to store raw water for treatment during the winter or treat and store enough drinking water during the summer to last through the winter. …
Energetics Of Hibernation In The Arctic Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus Parryii Kenicotti), Shawna Karpovich
Energetics Of Hibernation In The Arctic Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus Parryii Kenicotti), Shawna Karpovich
Biological Sciences
Arctic ground squirrels (Spermophilus parryii kenicotti) hibernate underground; experiencing burrows temperatures of -5 to -25C̊. Hibernation consists of 7-9 months of torpor interrupted every 2-3 weeks by 10-20 h arousal episodes with high body temperatures and metabolic rates. Metabolic rates and body temperatures were measured during arousal episodes under temperate and arctic conditions. No difference in cost of arousal episodes was detected. Yet, when the cost of thermogenesis during torpor was included, proportional cost of arousal episodes decreased from 86 to 27% comparing temperate to arctic conditions. The relationship between metabolic rate and body temperature was examined during the recooling …
The Limnology Of Lake Clark, Alaska, Alexander Xanthus Wilkens
The Limnology Of Lake Clark, Alaska, Alexander Xanthus Wilkens
Biological Sciences
This study gathered baseline limnological data to investigate the thermal structure, water quality, phytoplankton, and zooplankton of Lake Clark, Alaska. Results indicate Lake Clark is oligotrophic and mixes biannually, but stratification is weak and thermoclines are deep. Longitudinal gradients were seen in measurements of temperature, suspended solids, turbidity, light penetration, algal biomass, and zooplankton density. Wind and tributary inputs determine the thermal regime. Glacially-influenced tributaries drive turbidity and light gradients by introducing suspended solids to the inlet end of the lake. Suspended solids likely create the algal biomass gradient by limiting the light available for photosynthesis in the inlet basin. …
The Ecology Of Eulachon (Thaleichthys Pacificus) In Twentymile River, Alaska, Elizabeth Ann Spangler
The Ecology Of Eulachon (Thaleichthys Pacificus) In Twentymile River, Alaska, Elizabeth Ann Spangler
Fisheries
The ecology of eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus) was studied at Twentymile River, a tributory of Turnagain Arm located in southcentral Alaska. In 2000 and 2001, we investigated the environmental factors associated with the migration of adult eulachon and downstream drift of larval eulachon. We assessed run timing, freshwater duration, length, weight, age, presence or absence of teeth, fecundity, and gear selectivity for dip and gill nets. Catch per unit effort of migrating adult fish were correlated with water temperature, tide height, river discharge, light intensity, and the density of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). Water temperature, river discharge, tide height, and light …
Microsatellite Variation Reveals Similar Population Genetic Structure For Two Species Of Rockfish (Sebastes Borealis And Sebastes Paucispinis) With Different Life Histories, Andrew Paul Matala
Microsatellite Variation Reveals Similar Population Genetic Structure For Two Species Of Rockfish (Sebastes Borealis And Sebastes Paucispinis) With Different Life Histories, Andrew Paul Matala
Fisheries
Rockfish belong to the speciose genus Sebastes (72 species described in the Northeast Pacific). Basic biological and life history information for many rockfish species is limited. Little is known about juvenile recruitment, and identification in early life stages is difficult because the larvae of congeners look similar and often occur in spatial and temporal association. Population genetic structure is an important element for characterization of species or populations, and may provide information on productivity and life history. Eight micro satellite loci were evaluated for variability in analyses of genetic structure for two species of rockfish: the deepwater shelf rockfish bocaccio …
Steps To Freedom: The Process Of Escaping Abuse, Sandra J. Armstrong
Steps To Freedom: The Process Of Escaping Abuse, Sandra J. Armstrong
Psychology
The purpose of this study was to look at factors involved in the process of women leaving abusive relationships. In two interviews of one to two hours each, each of the three women told the story of her abusive relationship. Study findings indicate that these women began abusive relationships during unstable or chaotic periods of their lives, when they were more vulnerable to manipulation. The abuse caused a distortion of reality for these women, but as soon as they were able to gain a clear view of reality, they immediately left their relationships.
Comparing The Nutritional Quality Of Steller Sea Lion (Eumetopias Jubatus) Diets, Monica Kaho Bando
Comparing The Nutritional Quality Of Steller Sea Lion (Eumetopias Jubatus) Diets, Monica Kaho Bando
Marine Biology
Though the primary cause(s) of the Steller sea lion decline remains unknown, one hypothesis is nutritional stress, possibly the result of climatic regime shifts reducing prey availability and/or quality. Researchers at the Alaska SeaLife Center formulated three feeding regimes representative of Steller sea lion diets: prior to and during their population decline and from a stable population. The purpose of this project was to compare the nutritional quality of these diets using proximate composition and bomb calorimetry. The pre-decline and stable diets are composed of more high-fat prey, like herring, with resulting energy densities being significantly higher than the decline …

Duke Law & Technology Review
The statements, "The laws of nature," "the principles of nature," "the fundamental truths," etc., are not patentable, have been oft repeated but seldom understandingly used. They have led to misunderstanding and much confusion, not limited to members of the bar. In fact, the words... are all words of broad and also elastic meaning and are frequently used carelessly and without any attempt at refined distinctions.
Comparison Of Snowshoe Hare Populations In Interior Alaska, Bjorn Flora
Comparison Of Snowshoe Hare Populations In Interior Alaska, Bjorn Flora
Biological Sciences
Snowshoe hares, Lepus americanus, are a 'keystone' prey species in northern boreal forests and experience population fluctuations of 8-11-years. Despite intense responses of both vegetation and predators to changes in hare densities, landscape-scale comparisons of hare populations in Alaska have been limited to qualitative descriptions. We conducted capture-recapture studies of snowshoe hares at 5 locales in the Tanana valley, from Tok in the east to Clear in the west from 1999 to 2002. Snowshoe hare densities were highest in 1999 (x=6.36 ha⁻¹, SE=0.63) and declined thereafter. We were unable to detect declines in apparent survival during declining densities in our …

Preliminary Studies Of A Measure Of Conscientiousness, Braddon M. Garner Ma
Preliminary Studies Of A Measure Of Conscientiousness, Braddon M. Garner Ma
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Psychologists have been interested in personality characteristics for decades. One characteristic of personality studied by researchers is that of conscientiousness. Conscientiousness can de defined as a "degree of organization, persistence, and motivation in goal-directed behavior" (Costa & McCrae, 1985, p.2) This study divided the terms defining conscientiousness into three categories for purpose of item development: organization, persistence, and motivation. Organization incudes, but is not limited to, being organized, reliable, and practical. Persistence includes concepts of responsibleness, thoroughness, and commitment to hard-work. Motivation involves characteristics of enthusiasm, morality, cautiousness, and seriousness. The purpose of this study was to develop a measure …

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Integration In B-Cell Lymphoma Identifies A Candidate Tumor Suppressor Gene On Human Chromosome 15q151, Julia Beatty, Anne Terry, Julie Macdonald, Elizabeth Gault, Stanley Cevario, Stephen J. O'Brien, Ewan Cameron, James C. Neil
Biology Faculty Articles
Infection with immunosuppressive lentiviruses is associated with increased cancer risk, but most studies have implicated indirect mechanisms as the tumor cells generally lack integrated viral sequences. An exception wasfound in a B-cell lymphoma (Q254) where the tumor cells contained a single integrated feline immunodeficiency virus genome. Additional analysis now indicates that feline immunodeficiency virus integration in lymphoma Q254 resulted in promoter insertion and truncation of a conserved gene on feline chromosome B3, whereas the unaffected allele of the gene appeared to be transcriptionally down-regulated. The orthologous human gene (FLJ12973), is expressed ubiquitously and encodes a WD-repeat protein with structural similarity …

Dose-Response Effects Of Lithium On Spatial Memory In The Black Molly Fish., Thomas Kyle Creson
Dose-Response Effects Of Lithium On Spatial Memory In The Black Molly Fish., Thomas Kyle Creson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lithium continues to be widely prescribed for the management of bipolar disease, yet cognitive impairment-related side effects promote noncompliance of the treatment regimen. We have introduced a novel animal model, the black molly fish, to study dose-response effects of lithium on short-term (STM) and long-term (LTM) memories. We developed a method utilizing capillary ion analysis (CIA), to measure plasma and brain lithium levels employed in our behavioral studies. We then developed an appropriate testing environment to ascertain learning capacities of these fish. We established that black mollies could adequately perform a forced-choice spontaneous alternation (SA) task used extensively in rodents …
