The Effect Of Sports On Self-Concept: A Comparison Of Students In A Special Education Resource Room Who Participate In Sports And Students In A Special Education Resource Room Who Do Not Participate In Sports, Meredith Fiori May 2002

The Effect Of Sports On Self-Concept: A Comparison Of Students In A Special Education Resource Room Who Participate In Sports And Students In A Special Education Resource Room Who Do Not Participate In Sports, Meredith Fiori

Theses and Dissertations

Research indicates that students in special education have a lower self-concept than their non-disabled peers (Manhattan College, 1998). Manhattan College also states that students with disabilities who play sports have a self-concept equal to or higher than individuals without disabilities. Identifying the degree to which participation in sports may raise the self-concepts of students in special education is an important strategy in educational programming. Discovering techniques to improve the self-concepts of students in special education has been a difficult task for both teachers and parents.

The purpose of this study was to determine if a difference exists between the self-concepts …

Testis Developmental Phenotypes In Neurotropin Receptor Trka And Trkc Null Mutations: Role In Formation Of Seminiferous Cords And Germ Cell Survival, Andrea S. Cupp, Lina Tessarollo, Michael K. Skinner May 2002

Testis Developmental Phenotypes In Neurotropin Receptor Trka And Trkc Null Mutations: Role In Formation Of Seminiferous Cords And Germ Cell Survival, Andrea S. Cupp, Lina Tessarollo, Michael K. Skinner

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective of the present study was to determine if the neurotropin receptors trkC and trkA are involved in embryonic testis development. These receptors bind neurotropin 3 and nerve growth factor, respectively. The hypothesis tested was that the absence of trkC or trkA receptors will have detrimental effects on testis development and morphology. The trkA and trkC homozygote knockout (KO) mice generally die either at or shortly after birth. Therefore, heterozygote mice were mated to obtain homozygote gene KO mice at Embryonic Day (E) 13, E14, E17, and E19 of gestation, with E0 being the plug date. Gonads from approximately …

Participants were administered two forms of an assessment over a six-month period. The first assessment was executed in September of 2001. The participants were then introduced to …

Medicine Men Of The Anti-Progressive Party : Sacred Sites, Public Lands, And The Construction Of Religious Liberty, Jacob Culbertson May 2002

Medicine Men Of The Anti-Progressive Party : Sacred Sites, Public Lands, And The Construction Of Religious Liberty, Jacob Culbertson

Honors Theses

On December 29, 1890 the United States Seventh Calvary descended upon a group of practitioners of the blossoming Ghost Dance religion and killed more than 300 Indians belonging to multiple Northern Plains nations. The massacre at Wounded Knee Creek was the apex of the United States government's violent campaign to win the American west from its original inhabitants, and it marked a transition in strategy in the young republic's assault on Native America. Having essentially won the land battles to annex the bulk of the economically valuable Native territory, the United States turned its attention away from the physical disposal …

Role Of Police, Prosecutors And Defense Attorneys In Traffic Accident Investigation And Adjudication In Chattanooga, Tennessee., Karen L. Beisel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study provides, via personal interviews, a qualitative examination of police, district attorneys, public defenders and private attorneys who were involved in traffic accident investigation and criminal court adjudication in Chattanooga, Tennessee. These data were compiled to develop a profile of the actors and their involvement in the process of a criminal charge stemming from a traffic accident. The literature suggests that the actors work as a team to process a case from investigation to adjudication; however, the actors in Chattanooga, Tennessee were fragmented in their handling of a case. This study collectively examines police and attorneys in relation to …

Marine Interstitial Tardigrades And Other Meiofauna Of Huntington Beach, South Carolina., Michael Scott Gaugler May 2002

Marine Interstitial Tardigrades And Other Meiofauna Of Huntington Beach, South Carolina., Michael Scott Gaugler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At Huntington Beach, SC meiofauna distribution was investigated. The purpose of the study was to determine tardigrade species present and any significant differences in the distribution pattern. Meiofauna were analyzed to determine if there were significant differences in their distribution patterns in relation to abiotic variables.

Cores were taken in the intertidal zone along three elevations. Each core was divided into depth samples and was processed to remove meiofauna. Each taxon (>1500 specimens) and tardigrades was statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA to compare distribution patterns.

There were eighteen taxa identified and an estimated 330,338 specimens. The seven dominant taxa …

White Knowledge And The Cauldron Of Story: The Use Of Allusion In Terry Pratchett's Discworld., William Thomas Abbott May 2002

White Knowledge And The Cauldron Of Story: The Use Of Allusion In Terry Pratchett's Discworld., William Thomas Abbott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the last twenty years, Terry Pratchett's Discworld series has become very popular. Pratchett's success hinges in part on his use of allusion, in what Tolkien called the "Cauldron of Story," and what Pratchett refers to as "white knowledge." This paper explores the Discworld novels and illustrates Pratchett's use and success of storytelling through a few key directions: folk tales, fantasy literature, movies, and rock music.

Pratchett has received limited critical review, mostly of a negative nature, while producing a strong literary series, one crafted with both obvious and subtle recognition of his genre's sources. While standing on the shoulders …

A Portrayal Of Gender And A Description Of Gender Roles In Selected American Modern And Postmodern Plays., Bonny Ball Copenhaver May 2002

A Portrayal Of Gender And A Description Of Gender Roles In Selected American Modern And Postmodern Plays., Bonny Ball Copenhaver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe how gender was portrayed and to determine how gender roles were depicted and defined in a selection of Modern and Postmodern American plays. This study was based on the symbolic interaction theory of gender that suggests that social roles are learned over time and are subject to constant reinforcement. The significance of this study was derived from the broad topic of gender because gender issues are relevant to a variety of fields and exploring the effects of gender in one field contributes to the understanding of gender in another field.

The plays …

Mannose And Lipopolysaccharide Receptors On The Surface Of Granular Hemocytes From The Crayfish Procambarus Clarkii., Gelu Dobrescu May 2002

Mannose And Lipopolysaccharide Receptors On The Surface Of Granular Hemocytes From The Crayfish Procambarus Clarkii., Gelu Dobrescu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Procambarus clarkii hemocytes have been shown to bind to both LPS and a mannose containing neoglycoprotein conjugated to fluorescent probes. A decrease in the observed number of fluorescent hemocytes indirectly indicated that the binding of FITC-LPS to these cells is impaired by initial incubation with LPS. Prior treatment of hemocytes with horseradish peroxidase, a mannose rich glycoprotein, decreased their capacity to bind mannose. Mannan had no inhibitory effect on the binding of either ligand. Mixed hemocytes and hemocyte subpopulations separated by buoyant density were incubated with both ligands and revealed that a subpopulation of granular hemocytes bound both LPS and …

Dead Bones Dancing: The Taki Onqoy, Archaism, And Crisis In Sixteenth Century Peru., Sσndra Lee Allen Henson May 2002

Dead Bones Dancing: The Taki Onqoy, Archaism, And Crisis In Sixteenth Century Peru., Sσndra Lee Allen Henson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1532, a group of Spanish conquistadores defeated the armies of the Inca Empire and moved from plundering the treasure of the region to establishing an imperial reign based on the encomienda system. The increasing demand for native labor and material goods forced fragmentation and restructuring of indigenous communities. The failure of evangelization efforts by the Spanish, the breakdown of their early bureaucratic apparatus, and the threat of the Neo-Inca State in exile generated a crisis among the Spanish in the 1560s. Concomitantly, indigenous Andeans experienced psychological and spiritual pressures found an outlet in a millenarian movement known as Taki …

Synesthetic Sensor Fusion Via A Cross-Wired Artificial Neural Network., Stephen Samuel Seneker May 2002

Synesthetic Sensor Fusion Via A Cross-Wired Artificial Neural Network., Stephen Samuel Seneker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this interdisciplinary study was to examine the behavior of two artificial neural networks cross-wired based on the synesthesia cross-wiring hypothesis. Motivation for the study was derived from the study of psychology, robotics, and artificial neural networks, with perceivable application in the domain of mobile autonomous robotics where sensor fusion is a current research topic. This model of synesthetic sensor fusion does not exhibit synesthetic responses. However, it was observed that cross-wiring two independent networks does not change the functionality of the individual networks, but allows the inputs to one network to partially determine the outputs of the …
