All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

As a new venture to integrate research and education, a pilot section of a first-year laboratory sequence known as the Interdisciplinary Laboratory (ID Lab) was introduced on the Harvey Mudd campus during the 1999–2000 academic year and continues to be offered. The ID Lab attempts to bridge laboratory experiences from biology, chemistry, and physics for the first-year student. Taught by a team of faculty from these disciplines, the course seeks both to illustrate commonality of investigative methods and laboratory techniques in these sciences and to introduce discipline-specific principles. Experiments with a chemistry component include the Molecular Weight of Macromolecules, the …

Fisheries Research Report No. 138 - Historical Diving Profiles For Pearl Oyster Divers In Western Australia, H M A Lulofs, Neil R. Sumner

Fisheries Research Reports

The annual value of the pearl oyster fishery off the north coast of Western Australia is in the vicinity of 153 million dollars. Most pearl oyster fishing occurs in the Broome area. This area is managed on a quota system with a total allowable catch of 512,000 shells in 1996, during which 511,716 shells were taken. This required 12,775 hours of dive time at a catch rate of 40 shell per hour.

Drift diving practices in the Western Australian pearling industry over the last eighteen years are described and related to the number of medical incidents. The study provides a …

Passage From Nong Gua, Praichon Intanujit

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

I was a sophomore from a small village when Pira Sudham, the author of Monsoon Country and People of Esarn, came to speak at my university about poverty and the forgotten beauty of his people, my people, the poor people of Esarn, the Northeastern region of Thailand. Listening to his sad yet courageous stories, I was reminded over again that I, too, had stories to tell, though it would be some years before I finally sat down to puzzle them out. The result is a memoir of my childhood years in rural Surin, where the mother tongue is Khmer, where …

Monitoring The Prey-Field Of Marine Predators: Combining Digital Imaging With Datalogging Tags, Sascha Hooker, Ian L. Boyd, Mark Jessop, Oliver Cox, John Blackwell, Peter Boveng, John Bengston

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

There is increasing interest in the diving behavior of marine mammals. However, identifying foraging among recorded dives often requires several assumptions. The simultaneous acquisition of images of the prey encountered, together with records of diving behavior will allow researchers to more fully investigate the nature of subsurface behavior. We tested a novel digital camera linked to a time-depth recorder on Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella). During the austral summer 2000-2001, this system was deployed on six lactating female fur seals at Bird Island, South Georgia, each for a single foraging trip. The camera was triggered at depths greater …

Public Attitudes And Knowledge Of The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog: A Common And Controversial Species, Donna Lybecker, Berton Lee Lamb, Phadrea Ponds

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus; hereafter, prairie dogs) are native to the short-grass prairie region of North America from Mexico to Canada (figure 1).According to government documents (64 Federal Register 57 at 14426–14427), before the 19th century expansion of the United States, prairie dogs inhabited millions of acres of the Great Plains and lived in huge colonies west of the Missouri River. Settlement of the Great Plains and the transformation of vast areas from native grassland to tilled farmland forever changed the prairie ecosystem and prairie dog habitat.
Over the course of the last century, the habitat range …

"Now everything is crazy. Everybody wants to send money to Cuba, to travel to Cuba, to call Cuba. We never did these things. When we came we started working and saving for our life and our kids here. We didn't have contact with our family for almost thirty years. Jose just got to see his family again last year, for the first time since he left in 1963. We didn't have the option to call and send money like they do now. It was much more difficult." These are the words of Emestina, a 72-year-old Cuban woman who immigrated to …

Putting The Decision In Decision Support, David Swayne Jul 2002

Putting The Decision In Decision Support, David Swayne

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We consider a novel approach to developing multi-objective environmental decision support applications. We propose using causal probabilistic networks (CPN) to subsume one or more engineering process models, together with CPN implementations of specific decisions and utility measures. So-called decision nodes are set to prior probability assignments of 1/N (where the particular decision has N possible values) and utility nodes are based upon the standard lottery principle give a value for that decision choice. The decisions can be so-called "one-shot" or sequential (time-dependent or at least seasonal). In the latter case maximization of the utility is calculated by gaming to optimize …

SUPREME, a very articulated project still in progress financed by the Italian Universities andResearch Ministry, concerns an integrated decision support system finalized to catastrophic events forecastand to prevent and mitigate flooding and air pollution effects on monumental stones. This paper focuses onthe aerosols deposition tool. The new box model AERBOX simulates the whole life cycle of aerosols andthe consequent urban pollution impact due to the flux of particulate matter deposition. Applied on themonumental area of Florence basin, AERBOX models the industrial and mobile sources of the 50 km x 50km surrounding area induced pollution, and estimates the aerosol deposition on …

A Grid-Generation Based Method For Information Fusion, Tian Xiang Yue, Ji Yuan Liu, Ying An Wang Jul 2002

A Grid-Generation Based Method For Information Fusion, Tian Xiang Yue, Ji Yuan Liu, Ying An Wang

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Relative studies on multi-scale information fusion, multi-source information fusion and multi-sensor information fusion are reviewed. On the basis of analyzing problems in existing methods of information fusion, a grid-generation model for simulating population density of China is proposed as a case of multi-source information fusion. By fusing remotely sensed data, meteorological data, soil data and statistical data, spatial distribution of population density in China is successfully simulated, in which grid generation process is described in detail. In addition, the basic idea of a grid-generation model as a case of multi-scale information fusion is discussed. The models for multi-source information fusion …

Long Run Technical Change In An Energy-Environmenteconomy (E3) Model For An Ia System, J. H. Köhler Jul 2002

Long Run Technical Change In An Energy-Environmenteconomy (E3) Model For An Ia System, J. H. Köhler

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A world macroeconomic model is being developed to investigate policies for climate change and sustainabledevelopment, as a module of an IAM structure for the UK Tyndall Centre. This requires an economic modelfor the next 50-100 years, to show how changes in industrial structure and technology change GHGemissions. There is no suitable and generally accepted theory of long term technical change/development(Kondratiev waves) for incorporation in a macroeconomic modelling structure. However, there is now a gooddescriptive theory, which is intended to provide an economic history perspective of long term change. This isFreeman and Louçν (2001). The objective of our model is to …

In Situ Observations On Three Species Of Large-Finned Deep-Sea Squids, M. Vecchione, C. F. E. Roper, Edith A. Widder, Tamara M. Frank

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The manned submersible Johnson Sea-Link II was used for a series of dives on the continental slope of the eastern Gulf of Mexico in September 1995. The deep-sea squids Mastigoteuthis hjorti Chun, 1913 and Octopoteuthis megaptera (Verrill, 1885) were repeatedly observed at depths of 600–850 m. Both species were videotaped alive, in situ, for the first time during these dives. These species share the characteristic of very large fins, almost as long as the mantle length, but their swimming behavior observed in the vicinity of the submersible differed greatly. Throughout most of the videotaped sequences of O. megaptera, it …
