At Whose Expense?: Cherokee Freedmen In Indian Territory, Roxanne Elizabeth Johnson

History ETDs

This thesis is a history of the Cherokee Freedmen in Indian Territory from 1866 to 1898. Cherokee Freedmen were the former slaves of the Cherokee Nation of Indians. The position of Black Freedmen in Cherokee society before and after the Civil War differed from those of freedmen from southern states. The future of Freedmen in the Cherokee Nation was one of the many issues used by the Federal government to slowly dismantle Cherokee sovereignty. The purpose of this thesis is to explain the unique position the Cherokee Freedmen held in Indian Territory. Little research has been done concerning this part …

Creating Virtual Experiences In Computer-Mediated Environments, Lisa R. Klein Jul 2002

Creating Virtual Experiences In Computer-Mediated Environments, Lisa R. Klein

Review of Marketing Science Working Papers

Although much excitement has arisen over the potential for "interactivity" on the Web, very little is understood about what exactly creates a sense of interactivity and what impact it has on user behavior. Businesses are spending millions of dollars to add interactivity to their Web sites, in the form of games, animated pictures, and personalization tools, without knowing exactly what impact this has on their customers. In this research, the critical components of this computer-mediated interactivity and, more broadly, the larger realm of virtual experiences that it can create are explored. In doing so, I investigate the impact of the …

Macro-Microscopic Fluorescence Imaging Of Human Npc Xenografts In A Murine Model Using Topical Vs. Intravenous Administration Of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid, Vanaja Manivasager, Paul Wan Sia Heng, Jinsong Hao, Wei Zheng, Khee Chee Soo, Malini Olivo Jul 2002

Macro-Microscopic Fluorescence Imaging Of Human Npc Xenografts In A Murine Model Using Topical Vs. Intravenous Administration Of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid, Vanaja Manivasager, Paul Wan Sia Heng, Jinsong Hao, Wei Zheng, Khee Chee Soo, Malini Olivo

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

The use of 5-aminolevulinic acid to induce endogenous porphyrins for the purpose of detection of epithelial cancers is being studied extensively in many centres around the world. The challenge is to prepare an efficacious formulation of 5-ALA for the purpose of cancer detection. In this study, we compared two formulations of topical 5-ALA applications with intravenous administration in NPC/CNE-2 xenografts on balb/c nude mice. One of the formulations was a gantrez muco-adhesive patch and the other was a polyvinyl-pyrolidone muco-adhesive patch. The Karl Storz fluorescence endoscopy system was used to obtain macroscopic fluorescence images. Microscopic fluorescence imaging was done by …

Eicosanoids Mediate Manduca Sexta Cellular Response To The Fungal Pathogen Beauveria Bassiana: A Role For The Lipoxygenase Pathway, Jeffrey C. Lord, Sheri Anderson, David W. Stanley Jul 2002

Eicosanoids Mediate Manduca Sexta Cellular Response To The Fungal Pathogen Beauveria Bassiana: A Role For The Lipoxygenase Pathway, Jeffrey C. Lord, Sheri Anderson, David W. Stanley

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Many studies have documented the involvement of eicosanoids in insect cellular immune responses to bacteria. The use of the fungal pathogen Beauveria bassiana as a nodulation elicitor, with inhibition of phospholipase A2 by dexamethasone, extends the principle to fungi. This study also provides the first evidence of involvement of the lipoxygenase (LOX) pathway rather than the cyclooxygenase (COX) pathway in synthesis of the nodulation mediating eicosanoid(s). The LOX product, 5(S)- hydroperoxyeicosa-6E,8Z,11Z,14Z-tetraenoic acid (5-HPETE), substantially reversed nodulation inhibition caused by dexamethasone and the LOX inhibitors, caffeic acid and esculetin. The COX product, prostaglandin H2 (PGH2), did not reverse …

Effect Of Duration Of Performance Test On Variance Component Estimates For Lamb Growth Rate, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck Jul 2002

Effect Of Duration Of Performance Test On Variance Component Estimates For Lamb Growth Rate, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective was to determine the effect of periods of adjustment and duration of performance test on estimating genetic variance parameters for ADG. Variance components were estimated from ADG data collected from 1978 to 1984 on a total of 1,047 Targhee ewe and ram lambs at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station (Dubois, ID). Across all years, lambs averaged 84 ± 9 d of age and 25 ± 5.4 kg of weight when placed on test. Lambs were provided ad libitum access to a commercial pellet of barley grain and ground alfalfa for 14 wk. Every 2 wk, ADG was recorded. …

Planning For Beef Cattle Operations In The Face Of Drought, Richard T. Clark, Don C. Adams Jul 2002

Planning For Beef Cattle Operations In The Face Of Drought, Richard T. Clark, Don C. Adams

Cornhusker Economics

About two years ago we wrote a Cornhusker Economics article on this same topic. Unfortunately, the current drought is more widespread and onerous. Presently, many producers are out or about to be out of grass. This late in the year options are limited. Selling cattle, including part of the breeding herd is an option that many have begun to exercise. Weaning early, selling the calves or placing them in feedlots and feeding the cows are other options.

Tolerance, Performance, And Aerobic Metabolism Of Redband Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss Ssp.) During Acute Exposure To Elevated Temperature, Karen Reed Lizars Jul 2002

Tolerance, Performance, And Aerobic Metabolism Of Redband Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss Ssp.) During Acute Exposure To Elevated Temperature, Karen Reed Lizars

Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this thesis was to determine whether the redband trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss ssp.) of Oregon's inland desert basins are negatively affected by the high peak temperatures (> 20 °C) often observed in their native streams. Small (40 - 140 g) redband trout from three streams (Bridge, Rock, and Twelve-mile creeks) were collected and tested on-site for aspects of thermal physiology, including: critical swimming velocity (Ucrit), maximum metabolic rate (MO2), metabolic power, and total cost of transport (TCT) at 24 °C; routine MO2 at 14 to 2: 28 °C: and critical thermal maximum (CTM). At …
