Rotational Lift: Something Different Or More Of The Same?, Jeffrey A. Walker Dec 2002

Rotational Lift: Something Different Or More Of The Same?, Jeffrey A. Walker

Biology

This paper addresses the question, do the rotational forces in the hovering fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster reflect something different (the Magnus effect) or more of the same (circulatory-and-attached-vortex force)? The results of an unsteady blade-element model using empirically derived force coefficients from translating (root-oscillating) wings are compared with recent results derived from both the measured forces on a dynamically scaled Drosophila wing and the computational fluid dynamic (CFD)-modeled forces on a virtual Drosophila wing. The behavior of the forces in all three models during wing rotation supports the hypothesis that rotational lift is not a novel aerodynamic mechanism but is …

Dateline: The West, Andrus Center For Public Policy Dec 2002

Dateline: The West, Andrus Center For Public Policy

Research and Reports

A day-long conference, Dateline: The West, was held December 6, 2002 at Boise State University and was presented by the Andrus Center for Public Policy, the Idaho Statesman, and the Gannett Co. Pacific Group. The purpose of the gathering was to explore how news organizations make decisions about what to report and why, and how those decisions, in turn, affect public opinion and public policy decisions, which are often made far from the west.

Palestinian Martyrdom Revisited: Critical Reflections On Topical Cultures Of Explanation , Iris Jean-Klein Dec 2002

Palestinian Martyrdom Revisited: Critical Reflections On Topical Cultures Of Explanation , Iris Jean-Klein

Pragmatism, Law and Governmentality

This paper ponders the tide of public discourse which arose in response to the Palestinian martyrdom bombings in the recent Al Aqusa Intifada, in which social scientists and anthropologists have been "active" participants, and where the reasons and causes of this phenomenon have been the centre of debate. The paper questions the value of this analytical posture by placing it next to a habit of everyday discursive practice the author of the paper became aware of during fieldwork with politically active in the First Intifada. People (esp. women) would entertain an instrumentalist explanation of actions or qualities of which they …

Breaking New Ground: Assisting Farmers With Disabilities Through The Application Of Assistive Technology, William Field Dec 2002

Breaking New Ground: Assisting Farmers With Disabilities Through The Application Of Assistive Technology, William Field

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

With regards to agriculture in much of eastern Europe and northern Africa, the significant problem that landmine detonations present to farmers often goes unnoticed. This problem causes careers in agriculture to be labeled as the most hazardous occupations around the world. However, little attention has been given to rehabilitation practices and assistive technology to help those who have been disabled in this line of work. The Breaking New Ground Resource Center at Purdue University is attempting to resolve the problem at hand by providing technical assistance to those who have been impacted by physical disabilities, in hopes that others may …

How Ngos Can Build Peace: Landmine Clearance And Victim Assistance, Maureen Morton Dec 2002

How Ngos Can Build Peace: Landmine Clearance And Victim Assistance, Maureen Morton

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction are multi-disciplinary from a governance, organizational behavior, executive development and field perspective. Rarely, though, are the tools of competitive advantage, project planning and conflict resolution software used to seek linkages with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to coordinate resources, particularly to integrate the disparate sectors of landmine and UXO clearance, victim assistance and resourcing across industries. One method is to employ “best practices” from developed countries proven to develop abilities for disabled farmers and youth in post-conflict countries as one of a number of agrarian and health care initiatives built around demining as agricultural preparation. The goal is …

Fisheries Research Report No. 142 - Identifying The Development Stages Of Preserved Eggs Of Snapper, Pagrus Auratus, From Shark Bay, Western Australia, J. Norriss, Gary Jackson Dec 2002

Fisheries Research Report No. 142 - Identifying The Development Stages Of Preserved Eggs Of Snapper, Pagrus Auratus, From Shark Bay, Western Australia, J. Norriss, Gary Jackson

Fisheries Research Reports

The characteristics used to identify 19 developmental stages of preserved eggs of snapper, Pagrus auratus, collected from Shark Bay, Western Australia, during annual plankton surveys, are described and illustrated. A key is provided to enable the age of each egg stage to be estimated based on sea surface temperature and salinity observed during sampling. This report is intended as a reference for inexperienced staff, to ensure that between-year comparisons of snapper spawning biomass, estimated using the daily egg production method, are based on consistent egg staging and ageing methods.

Fisheries Research Report No. 143 - Methods Used In The Collection, Preparation And Interpretation Of Narrow-Barred Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus Commerson) Otoliths For A Study Of Age And Growth In Western Australia, Paul Lewis, M. C. Mackie Dec 2002

C. Mackie

Fisheries Research Reports

The narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) is wide ranging throughout the Indo-West Pacific region where it has been the subject of various age and growth studies. Methods used in these studies have varied considerably and in some cases may have led to misleading conclusions. The purpose of this report, therefore, is to document in detail the methods used in determining the age and growth during a FRDC funded stock assessment of the species in the waters off Western Australia. These methods are considered to optimise the collection, processing, accuracy of microincrement counts, and interpretation of the annuli in both whole …
