School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The year 2002 will mark the fiftieth anniversary of completion of the Harlan County Dam and Multi-Purpose Reservoir. This seems a good time to write about the history of and reasons for building the dam, the effects of the dam and reservoir on the Republican River valley, and the geologic features seen along the shores of the lake and areas nearby. As many junior authors helped produced this educational circular, they are listed in the table of contents. All other sections were written by the senior author.

Includes July 2016 update: Addendum of photographs showing fault traces on drought-exposed lake …

Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants: Designation Of Critical Habitat For The Topeka Shiner, Proposed Rule

Endangered Species Bulletin

We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, propose designation of critical habitat pursuant to the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, for the Topeka shiner (Notropis topeka). This proposal is made in response to a court settlement in Biodiversity Legal Foundation et al. v. Ralph Morganweck et al. C00–D–1180, committing the Service to submit for publication in the Federal Register a proposal to withdraw the existing ‘‘not prudent’’ critical habitat determination together with a new proposed critical habitat determination for the Topeka shiner by August 13, 2002. We are proposing to designate as critical habitat a …

Mercury Selective Electrode, Dale D. Russell Aug 2002

Mercury Selective Electrode, Dale D. Russell

Boise State Patents

The present invention is an apparatus for laboratory and field use in detecting and measuring Hg.sup.+ and Hg.sup.2+ in sample. A selective mercury binding agent, such as a chelating agent or clathrating agent, is covalently bound in a copolymer and deposited as an electrode layer. To prepare the preferred apparatus of the invention, thiophene, or other, similar monomer, is derivatized by covalent attachment thereto of Kryptofix-21.TM. (1,4,10-trioxa-7,13-diazacyclopentadecane) in the 3-position. The thiophene monomer and Kryptofix-21.TM. are co-polymerized and electrodeposited by known techniques onto a conductive substrate, such as platinum or glassy carbon, to obtain a multi-layer polymer coating of desired …

Introduction: Processes, New Prospects, And Approaches, Carlos Vélez-Ibáñez, Anna Sampaio

Ethnic Studies

One of the best ways to begin to understand the cultures of the Latina/o populations of the United States is to consider the term as it has been used and appropriated over time. The term "Latino" (Spanish Latino Americana), according to David Bushnell 0970: 3) was first used by the Colombian publicist Jose Maria Torres Caicedo in 1856 (Miguel Tinker Salas, personal communication, 2001). "Latin" was used in the United States, especially in films from the 1920s through the 1960s as a cover designation that masked the origin of Mexicans and Puerto Ricans superseding the word "Spanish" to accomplish the …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

This review summarizes a collection of lactic acid bacteria that are now undergoing genomic sequencing and analysis. Summaries are presented on twenty different species, with each overview discussing the organisms fundamental and practical significance, environmental habitat, and its role in fermentation, bioprocessing, or probiotics. For those projects where genome sequence data were available by March 2002, summaries include a listing of key statistics and interesting genomic features. These efforts will revolutionize our molecular view of Gram-positive bacteria, as up to 15 genomes from the low GC content lactic acid bacteria are expected to be available in the public domain by …

Deep Ecology And Heideggerian Phenomenology, Matthew Antolick Aug 2002

Deep Ecology And Heideggerian Phenomenology, Matthew Antolick

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the connections between Arne Naess's Deep Ecology and Martin Heidegger's Phenomenology. The latter provides a philosophical basis for the former. Martin Heidegger's critique of traditional metaphysics and his call for an "event" ontology that is deeper than the traditional substance ontology opens a philosophical space in which a different conception of what it is to be emerges. Heidegger's view of humans also provides a basis for the wider and deeper conception of self Arne Naess seeks: one that gets rid of the presupposition that human beings are isolated subjects embedded in a framework of objects distinct from …
