Groundwater Modeling At Pantex And Recommendations Of The Technical Advisory Group, George Rice, Serious Texans Against Nuclear Dumping (Stand), Inc.

Serious Texans Against Nuclear Dumping (STAND)

The Department of Energy (DOE) Pantex Plant is developing models to simulate groundwater flow and contaminant transport. A Technical Advisory Group (TAG) was formed to examine groundwater modeling issues at Pantex, review available models, and recommend those models it felt were appropriate to the situations at Pantex.

This report discusses: (1) groundwater models; (2) modeling issues and requirements in general and at Pantex; (3) the TAG and its recommendations; and (4) the reliability of model results.

Do Female Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia Spp.) Prefer To Shoal With Familiar Individuals Under Predation Pressure?, Culum Brown Sep 2002

Do Female Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia Spp.) Prefer To Shoal With Familiar Individuals Under Predation Pressure?, Culum Brown

Sentience Collection

Shoaling with familiar individuals may have many benefits including enhanced escape responses or increased foraging efficiency. This study describes the results of two complimentary experiments. The first utilised a simple binary choice experiment to determine if rainbowfish (Melanotaenia spp.) preferred to shoal with familiar individuals or with strangers. The second experiment used a “free range” situation where familiar and unfamiliar individuals were free to intermingle and were then exposed to a predator threat. Like many other small species of fish, rainbowfish were capable of identifying and distinguishing between individuals and choose to preferentially associate with familiar individuals as opposed to …

Review Of: Riverine Flood Plains: Present State And Future Trends, Klement Tockner, Jack Arthur Stanford Sep 2002

Review Of: Riverine Flood Plains: Present State And Future Trends, Klement Tockner, Jack Arthur Stanford

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Natural flood plains are among the most biologically productive and diverse ecosystems on earth. Globally, riverine flood plains cover > 2 x 10(6) km(2), however, they are among the most threatened ecosystems. Floodplain degradation is closely linked to the rapid decline in freshwater biodiversity; the main reasons for the latter being habitat alteration, flow and flood control, species invasion and pollution. In Europe and North America, up to 90% of flood plains are already 'cultivated' and therefore functionally extinct. In the developing world, the remaining natural flood plains are disappearing at an accelerating rate, primarily as a result of changing hydrology. …

The Gamma-Subunit Of The Na-K-Atpase As A Potential Regulator Of Apical And Basolateral Na+-Pump Isozymes During Development Of Bovine Pre-Attachment Embryos., L C Barcroft, S E Gill, A J Watson Sep 2002

The Gamma-Subunit Of The Na-K-Atpase As A Potential Regulator Of Apical And Basolateral Na+-Pump Isozymes During Development Of Bovine Pre-Attachment Embryos., L C Barcroft, S E Gill, A J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Expression and activity of the Na-K-ATPase within the basolateral membrane domains of the trophectoderm epithelium provide the driving force for accumulation of Na(+) and Cl(-) across the nascent epithelium, mediating fluid movement into the forming blastocoel. Within the trophectoderm of the bovine blastocyst, multiple isozymes of the Na-K-ATPase are expressed. Immunolocalization has demonstrated that the alpha1-isozyme localizes within the basolateral membrane, whereas the alpha 3-isozyme localizes to the apical cell margins. Gene-specific RT-PCR and wholemount indirect immunofluorescence confocal laser scanning microscopy were used to examine expression of the Na-K-ATPase gamma-subunit (a regulatory subunit of the Na-K-ATPase) throughout development of bovine …

Chestnut Market Opportunities Assessing Upscale Restaurant Interest In Value-Added Chestnut Products, Food Processing Center

Food Processing Center: Reports

Chestnut trees, and consequently chestnuts, were a large part of American culture at the turn of the twentieth century. The American chestnut, which is one of four primary chestnut species--Japanese, European, and Chinese being the other three--was prominent in many parts of the country but particularly, the eastern part of the United States. The wood from the trees was commonly used in furniture making and the chestnuts from the tree were frequently included on ingredient lists from recipes used during that era. To not be familiar with and eat chestnuts then could be likened to not having heard of and …
