Organizational Persistence And Change: A Case Study Of A Community College, Paula L. Welmers
Organizational Persistence And Change: A Case Study Of A Community College, Paula L. Welmers
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This longitudinal case study examined the origins, growth, and development of one community college in Michigan, North Central Michigan College (NCMC). The purpose of the study was to understand organizational persistence and change through learning how one organization formed and developed over time.
Five eras between 1958 and 1995 were described, and a conceptual frame considered three levels of organizational responsibility: national, state, and local environments; core technology activities; and leadership activities. Core technology activities were further analyzed using eight indicators of centrality and marginality: a) policy, b) number and type of employees, c) dedicated facilities; d) funding source, e) …

Inulin is a well-known fructose-based prebiotic which has been shown to stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria, a bacterial group generally considered beneficial for intestinal health. In the present study, we analyzed inulin-associated shifts in the total bacterial community of wild-type mice and mice carrying a genetically inactivated adenomatous polyposis coli tumor suppressor gene by using DNA-based approaches independent of bacterial culturability. Mice were fed a high-fat, nonfiber diet with or without inulin inclusion at a 10% (wt/wt) concentration. Cecal contents were analyzed after 0, 3, and 9 weeks on the experimental diets. Inulin inclusion significantly affected the total bacterial community …

Philosophy Faculty Publications
I hope no one is disappointed when I say right at the start that I basically agree with my critics. Not all is irenic, of course, and in philosophy it should not be. What distinguishes the philosophical from the poetic or the narrative discourse is the expectation of questions and objections. Much as I appreciate Myron Tuman's generous remarks on the occasionally poetic quality of Holding On to Reality (henceforth Holding), I have always enjoyed the give and take of philosophical exchanges though I have tried, over the years, to be gentler in giving and stronger in taking. There are …

What Was Under The Mcmartin Preschool? A Review And Behavioral Analysis Of The "Tunnels" Find, W. Joseph Wyatt
What Was Under The Mcmartin Preschool? A Review And Behavioral Analysis Of The "Tunnels" Find, W. Joseph Wyatt
Psychology Faculty Research
The McMartin Preschool child abuse case began in 1983 in Manhattan Beach, California, and was one of the most visible cases in history. Although two trials were conducted and no convictions were obtained, some individuals continue to believe that dozens of children were sexually abused at the preschool. In 1990 an archeologist was hired to determine whether tunnels had existed under the school because some of the children had alleged that some of their abuse took place in tunnels under the building. The archeologist’s report was issued in 1993. It concluded that evidence of back-filled tunnels had been found. This …

Diets Of Baird’S Beaked Whales, Berardius Bairdii, In The Southern Sea Of Okhotsk And Off The Pacific Coast Of Honshu, Japan, William A. Walker, James G. Mead, Robert L. Brownell Jr.
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Stomach contents were analyzed from 127 Baird’s beaked whales, Berardizls bairdii, taken in coastal waters of Japan. During late July-August of 1985- 1987, 1989, and 1991, 107 samples were collected from off the Pacific coast of Honshu. An additional 20 samples were collected from whales taken in the southern Sea of Okhotsk during late August-September of 1988 and 1989. Prey identification using fish otoliths and cephalopod beaks revealed the whales fed primarily on deep-water gadiform fishes and cephalopods in both regions. Prey species diversity and the percentage of cephalopods and fish differed between the two regions. Off the Pacific …

Fab:Ulous! Family Literacy Nights: Learning To Listen To Families, Ellen Mcintyre, Hope Longwell-Grice, Diane Kyle
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This article describes our implementation of a program aimed at supporting families' literacy through books and strategies and through capitalizing on what the families know and care about. We held several Family Literacy Nights in which we planned activities, workshops, and book give-aways around families' interests, discerned during the first event. We struggled with simultaneously accomplishing our goals and those that reflected the families. In this article we share our successes as well as the lessons we learned about how to do this work.
Choice Programs And Market-Based Separationism, Paul E. Salamanca
Choice Programs And Market-Based Separationism, Paul E. Salamanca
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
The Supreme Court's recent decision in Zelman v. Simmons-Harris appears to clear the way for a wide variety of educational and charitable choice plans. In this decision, the Court upheld against Establishment Cause Challenge a formally neutral school choice program that encompassed a wide variety of options in the public and private sector, including private sectarian schools. The Court reasoned that, when the government makes aid available to a broad class of recipients without regard to their religious or non-religious affiliation, and when the recipients have a genuine choice as to whether to obtain that aid from a religious or …

Development And Evaluation Of The Sleep Treatment And Education Program For Students (Steps), Franklin Christian Brown
Development And Evaluation Of The Sleep Treatment And Education Program For Students (Steps), Franklin Christian Brown
Doctoral Dissertations
Sleep difficulties are becoming progressively more common among university students and may be related to increased academic and emotional difficulties. Psychoeducational interventions are among the most effective methods for reducing sleep difficulties and are significantly better than pharmacological treatments. Attempts to demonstrate the effectiveness of such treatments among university students are not present in the literature.
The purpose of this study was to develop the Sleep Treatment Education Program for Students (STEPS) and evaluate its effectiveness to improve sleep habits and reduce sleep complaints. The study used a double blind, experimental design. Participants in the treatment condition received Sleep Hygiene …
Squeezing The Juice® Out Of The Washington Redskins®: Intellectual Property Rights In "Scandalous" And "Disparaging" Trademarks After Harjo V. Pro-Football Inc., Cameron Smith
Washington Law Review
In Harjo v. Pro-Football Inc., the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board cancelled the federally registered trademarks THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS, REDSKINS, and REDSKINETIES after finding them to be disparaging matter under section 2(a) of the Lanham Act. Pro-Football has appealed the Board's decision to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. This Note argues that Harjo's adoption of the "substantial composite" standard for analyzing disparaging trademarks potentially ignores the majority of the implicated group members' viewpoints and promotes section 2(a) trademark cancellations. In addition, the liberal standing requirements for opposition and cancellation proceedings combined with Harlo's disparagement doctrine …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Data collected by fisheries observers aboard U.S. pelagic longline vessels were examined to quantify and describe elasmobranch bycatch off the southeastern U.S. coast (lat. 22°-35°N, long. 71°-82°W). From 1992 to 2000, 961 individual longline hauls were observed, during which 4,612 elasmobranchs (15% of the total catch) were documented. Of the 22 elasmobranch species observed, silky sharks, Carcharhinus falciformis, were numerically dominant (31.4% of the elasmobranch catch). The catch status of the animals (alive or dead) when the gear was retrieved varied widely depending on the species, with high mortalities seen for the commonly caught silky and night, C. signatus …

Thalidomide Prevents Donor Corneal Graft Neovascularization In An Alkali Burn Model Of Corneal Angiogenesis, A. Abbas, Aga Hassan Feroze, G. F. Hyman, B. Khan
Section of Ophthalmology
Objective: Thalidomide is a potent inhibitor of angiogenesis. We evaluated the effects of Thalidomide on corneal angiogenesis and on tissue survival of grafts in rabbit eyes with pre-existing neovascularization secondary to alkali burn.
Methods: Sixteen rabbits received alkali burns to one cornea. One month post-injury, assessments of corneal neovascularization were performed followed by corneal transplantation. Four rabbits received oral Thalidomide and ten got placebo (powdered sugar) for thirty days. Total corneal neovascularization (NV), clock hours (CH) involved in (NV), longest (NV) pedicle length (NVP) and the duration of time required for NV to develop were assessed.
Results: Thalidomide significantly decreased …
