Similarity Of Mathematics And Science Achievement Of Various Nations, Algirdas Zabulionis Sep 2001

Similarity Of Mathematics And Science Achievement Of Various Nations, Algirdas Zabulionis

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

In 1991-97, the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) undertook a Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) in which data about the mathematics and science achievement of the thirteen year-old students in more than 40 countries were collected. These data provided the opportunity to search for patterns of students' answers to the test items: which group of items was relatively more difficult (or more easy) for the students from a particular country (or group of countries). Using this massive data set an attempt was made to measure the similarities among country profiles of how students responded …

A Study Of Obscuration In Catadioptric Lenses, Martin Mccallum, Bruce W. Smith, Steve Bassett, Julian S. Cashmore, James E. Webb Sep 2001

A Study Of Obscuration In Catadioptric Lenses, Martin Mccallum, Bruce W. Smith, Steve Bassett, Julian S. Cashmore, James E. Webb

Presentations and other scholarship

In this paper we will examine the effect of obscuration upon the various features we desired to image with a 157nm microstepper utilising a catadioptric lens. We will show the effect the obscuration has upon imaging when using not only conventional illumination and binary masks, but also when using a range of enhancement techniques such as off-axis illumination and phase-shifting masks. We will show how use of a large obscuration, whilst enhancing the signals for the densest features, actually degrades the signal for more isolated features. The level of obscuration must also take into account cross duty-ratio effects, i.e. the …

Hard Lessons: Guiding America’S Approach To Third Generation Wireless Policy, Aaron Futch Sep 2001

Hard Lessons: Guiding America’S Approach To Third Generation Wireless Policy, Aaron Futch

Duke Law & Technology Review

The publicity over license auctions in Europe during 2000 created an atmosphere in which the prices that companies paid for third-generation wireless licenses received more attention than their actual plans to implement the technology. As American policymakers and corporate boardrooms consider the future of this technology here in America, it is vital that we develop a coherent and well-designed allocation process and then quickly move on to meatier problems.

Evaluation Of Texture Features For Image Segmentation, Navid Serrano, Jiebo Luo, Andreas Savakis Sep 2001

Evaluation Of Texture Features For Image Segmentation, Navid Serrano, Jiebo Luo, Andreas Savakis

Articles

Texture features are among the most commonly used image attributes in image understanding applications, such as image retrieval from databases. A number of methods and their variants have been developed over the years for texture feature extraction. Whereas they all have their merits and flaws, it is worthwhile to evaluate their performance in a specific application domain. The goal here is to establish which texture features are better suited for segmentation of natural scenes that contain multiple natural and synthetic textures. The performance of unsupervised texture segmentation based on multiresolution simultaneous autoregressive (MRSAR) models, wavelet coefficients, fractal dimension, edge direction …
