Film Depictions Of Judas, Kim Paffenroth Oct 2001

Film Depictions Of Judas, Kim Paffenroth

Journal of Religion & Film

This article analyzes the depiction of Judas in the seven best-known Jesus films. Perhaps surprisingly, all the depictions are positive, on the one hand breaking with centuries of traditions that depicted Judas as the basest of villains, but on the other, following a persistent minority tradition that portrayed him sympathetically.

The Catholic Imagination In Martin Scorsese's The Last Waltz, Christopher Garbowski Oct 2001

The Catholic Imagination In Martin Scorsese's The Last Waltz, Christopher Garbowski

Journal of Religion & Film

The author examines Martin Scorsese's rockumentary The Last Waltz of 1978 as an encounter between the communitarian focus of the Catholic imagination (cf. Greeley Catholic Imagination) and the more individualistic ethos dominant in contemporary society (cf. Taylor Ethics of Authenticity). He claims the encounter not only shapes Scorsese's fiction films but also exhibit's his notion of the filmmaker's mission. The subject matter of the film lends itself to this examination because a rock band balances between the individuality of its performers and the communality of its form. Moreover, overt religious values and themes of the film are explored in relation …

Wake Up! Gnosticism And Buddhism In The Matrix, Frances Flannery-Dailey, Rachel L. Wagner Oct 2001

Wake Up! Gnosticism And Buddhism In The Matrix, Frances Flannery-Dailey, Rachel L. Wagner

Journal of Religion & Film

The Wachowski brothers' 1999 hit release The Matrix draws on multiple religious traditions to establish its complex worldview. Two of the most prominent are Gnostic Christianity and Buddhism, which, like the film, pose humanity's fundamental problem and its solution in terms of ignorance and enlightenment. Because of ignorance, people mistake the "material" world for something real, but they may "wake up" from this dream with help from a guide who teaches them their true nature. This article explores the film's pervasive allusions to Gnosticism and Buddhism, which in turn opens up the question of the film's overarching message and ultimate …

Robert Zemeckis's Contact As A Late-Twentieth Century Paradiso, Gregory M. Sadlek Oct 2001

Robert Zemeckis's Contact As A Late-Twentieth Century Paradiso, Gregory M. Sadlek

Journal of Religion & Film

The film Contact employs a plot and literary motifs that are in many ways parallel to those in Dante's Paradiso. Although the film's philosophical and theological content has received mixed reviews, the film has deep significance because it not only seeks to convey a religious experience but also offers a kind of existential consolation similar to that offered by Dante. This is true even though the film is grounded in a vision of the numinous that is congruent not with the Dante's cosmos but with late twentieth-century science and cosmology. Contact, then, is a Dantean film that can …

The God Behind The Screen: Pleasantville And The Truman Show, Linda A. Mercadante Oct 2001

The God Behind The Screen: Pleasantville And The Truman Show, Linda A. Mercadante

Journal of Religion & Film

Two films from 1998, The Truman Show and Pleasantville, provide a possible basis for theological discussion. They introduce questions of illusion and reality, control and freedom, viewing and being viewed. These two products of the media world themselves ask how much our own interpretations of reality are influenced by our culture's modern media. Have Americans developed an obsessive interest in watching without being known (voyeurism)? Do the films portray society's worst fears about God? What aspects of human freedom and what aspects of God are left out? Effectively raising the questions, the films require richer resources to provide answers …

The Emerging Reference Paradigm: A Vision Of Reference Services In A Complex Information Environment, Scott Mandernack, John W. Fritch

Library Faculty Research and Publications

The emerging reference paradigm in a complex, technologically rich information environment tends toward a more deliberate blending of the conservative and liberal philosophies of reference. As key agents in the advancement of society and culture, librarians must recognize the value of community and the social context of information in providing services that support and enhance the full range of contemporary user needs.

Breadcrumbs: New And Selected Poems, Jonathan Kirk Ellis Oct 2001

Breadcrumbs: New And Selected Poems, Jonathan Kirk Ellis

Dissertations and Theses

These poems are grouped as they are in order to reflect a progression, a trail at the end of which my own spirituality is not found, but revealed. A subtitle might be Dilemmas and Destinations, for each poem can also be viewed individually as a struggle or desire to reach this goal. In fact, I label my two sub-sections in precisely these terms. I have organized them not to build upon one another, but to act as "snapshots" that describe my beliefs. My poems begin with family issues and/or characters that have shaped a belief in a multi-faceted God. Several …

Hesban 06: Tell Hesban And Vicinity In The Iron Age, Paul J. Ray Jr.

All Books

"This volume presents a layer-by-layer account of the discoveries from the six Iron Age strata (12th through 5th centuries B.C.) at Tell Hesban, Jordan, with regional survey data from its immediate vicinity. Discoveries are interpreted in light of cultural, ethnological, and natural-science data as well as historical events. Implications of these finds for an understanding of the history of the biblical tribe of Reuben and the tribal kingdoms of Ammon and Moab are also examined. It includes a summary of the site and the surrounding region during the Late Bronze Age and Hellenistic periods as well as a chapter on …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Terabytes of data are generated everyday in many organizations. To extract hidden predictive information from large volumes of data, data mining (DM) techniques are needed. Organizations are starting to realize the importance of data mining in their strategic planning and successful application of DM techniques can be an enormous payoff for the organizations. This paper discusses the requirements and challenges of DM, and describes major DM techniques such as statistics, artificial intelligence, decision tree approach, genetic algorithm, and visualization.

Integrating Color And Spatial Features For Content-Based Video Retrieval, Tong Lin, Chong-Wah Ngo, Hong-Jiang Zhang, Qing-Yun Shi Oct 2001

Integrating Color And Spatial Features For Content-Based Video Retrieval, Tong Lin, Chong-Wah Ngo, Hong-Jiang Zhang, Qing-Yun Shi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present a novel and efficient scheme for extracting, indexing and retrieving color images. Our motivation was to reduce the space overhead of partition-based approaches taking advantage of the fact that only a relatively low number of distinct values of a particular visual feature is present in most images. To extract color feature and build indices into our image database we take into consideration factors such as human color perception and perceptual range, and the image is partitioned into a set of regions by using a simple classifying scheme. The compact color feature vector and the spatial …

Mining Multi-Level Rules With Recurrent Items Using Fp'-Tree, Kok-Leong Ong, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim Oct 2001

Mining Multi-Level Rules With Recurrent Items Using Fp'-Tree, Kok-Leong Ong, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Association rule mining has received broad research in the academic and wide application in the real world. As a result, many variations exist and one such variant is the mining of multi-level rules. The mining of multi-level rules has proved to be useful in discovering important knowledge that conventional algorithms such as Apriori, SETM, DIC etc., miss. However, existing techniques for mining multi-level rules have failed to take into account the recurrence relationship that can occur in a transaction during the translation of an atomic item to a higher level representation. As a result, rules containing recurrent items go unnoticed. …

Hierarchical Mobility Management For Voip Traffic, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Anthony J. Mcauley Oct 2001

Hierarchical Mobility Management For Voip Traffic, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Anthony J. Mcauley

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A hierarchical IP-based mobility management mechanism is proposed for VoIP applications. The suggested mechanism uses the DMA (dynamic mobility agent) architecture, based on IDMP (intra-domain mobility management protocol), for managing intra-domain mobility and the dynamic binding mechanism of SIP (session initiation protocol) for managing global mobility. This combination of network and application layer mobility management reduces the global signaling load, provides fast handoff for ongoing conversations, enables efficient global transport and supports IP-layer paging.

Spectroscopy And Orbital Periods Of Four Cataclysmic Variable Stars, John R. Thorstensen, Cynthia J. Taylor Oct 2001

Spectroscopy And Orbital Periods Of Four Cataclysmic Variable Stars, John R. Thorstensen, Cynthia J. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present spectroscopy and orbital periods Porb of four relatively little-studied cataclysmic variable stars. The stars and their periods are: AF Cam, Porb = 0.324(1) d (the daily cycle count is slightly ambiguous); V2069 Cyg (= RX J2123.7+4217), 0.311683(2) d; PG 0935+075, 0.1868(3) d; and KUV 03580+0614, 0.1495(6) d. V2069 Cyg and KUV 03580+0614 both show He iiλ4686 emission comparable in strength to Hβ. V2069 Cyg appears to be a luminous nova-like variable, and the strong He ii suggests it may be an intermediate polar. The period of KUV 03580+0614 is similar to members …

Selecting English Language Learners For Reading Recovery, Salli Forbes Oct 2001

Selecting English Language Learners For Reading Recovery, Salli Forbes

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

The Standards and Guidelines of the Reading Recovery Council of North America (1998) clearly explains the rationale for selection of children for Reading Recovery with a quote from Marie Clay. "Reading Recovery is designed for children who are the lowest achievers in the class/age group. What is used is an inclusive definition. Principals have sometimes argued to exclude this or that category of children or to save places for children who might seem to “benefit the most,” but that is not using the full power of the program. It has been one of the surprises of Reading Recovery that all …

Reifying Communication At The Application Level, Andrew P. Black, Jie Huang, Jonathan Walpole Oct 2001

Reifying Communication At The Application Level, Andrew P. Black, Jie Huang, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Middleware, from the earliest RPC systems to recent Object-Oriented Remote Message Sending (RMS) systems such as Java RMI and CORBA, claims transparency as one of its main attributes. Coulouris et al. define transparency as “the concealment from the … application programmer of the separation of components in a distributed system.” They go on to identify eight different kinds of transparency.

We considered titling this paper “Transparency Considered Harmful”, but that title is misleading because it implies that all kinds of transparency are bad. This is not our view. Rather, we believe that the choice of which transparencies should be offered …

Multi-Disciplinary Professional Practices: A Consumer Welfare Perspective, Michael Trebilcock, Lila Csorgo Oct 2001

Multi-Disciplinary Professional Practices: A Consumer Welfare Perspective, Michael Trebilcock, Lila Csorgo

Dalhousie Law Journal

Multi-disciplinary professional practices (MDPs) involving lawyers, accountants and otherprofessionals, have been the subject of considerable industrystudyand controversy in Canada and abroad. In this article, the authors evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of MDPs strictly from a consumer welfare perspective. They argue that, although MDP critics' concerns surrounding such issues as solicitor-client privilege, independence, conflicts of interest, and unauthorized practice are valid, they are often overstated and are, in many cases, encountered even today by professionals outside the MDP context. The advantages to consumers of permitting the evolution of such practices would, in any event, significantly outweigh such disadvantages. The authors'analysis …

The Legislature, The Executive And The Courts: The Delicate Balance Of Power Or Who Is Running This Country Anyway?, A Wayne Mackay Oct 2001

The Legislature, The Executive And The Courts: The Delicate Balance Of Power Or Who Is Running This Country Anyway?, A Wayne Mackay

Dalhousie Law Journal

The expanding role of Canadian courts since the introduction of the Charter has prompted critics to decry what they see as excessive and "anti-democratic" judicial activism. The author addresses such criticisms, responding, in particular, to the arguments of Ted Morton and Rainer Knopff. The article critiques the basic elements of Morton/Knopf's thesis: that activist courts are anti-democratic, excessively political, and engaging in illegitimate law-making. Rejecting the claim that Canada's judiciary is a less democratic state institution, the author notes the powerful law and policy-making role performed by the federal cabinet-for practical purposes, an unelected body. The author endorses the dialogue …

Brightening The Covenant Chain: Aboriginal Treaty Meanings In Law And History After Marshall, Mark D. Walters Oct 2001

Brightening The Covenant Chain: Aboriginal Treaty Meanings In Law And History After Marshall, Mark D. Walters

Dalhousie Law Journal

The decision of the Supreme Court of Canada in R. v. Marshall raises some difficult questions about the interpretation of Crown-Aboriginal treaties, especially treaties dating from the eighteenth century. The Court acknowledged that the treaty context is important to establishing the meaning of treaty texts, and Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal perspectives must be considered. As a result, judges must have regard to historical analyses of Crown-Aboriginal relations when interpreting these old treaties. In this article, the author explores some of the complex theoretical problems that such legal-historical analyses create, focusing in particular upon the possibility that lawyers and judges may reach …

Seeking Historical Truth: The International Commission Of Inquiry Into The 1932-33 Famine In Ukraine, A J. Hobbins, Daniel Boyer

Dalhousie Law Journal

In the 1980s the WCFU (World Congress of Free Ukrainians) undertook many initiatives to "educate" Western public opinion on the Ukrainian Famine of 1932- 33, claiming that the famine was a Soviet act of genocide against the Ukrainian people. The WCFU sponsored an international commission of enquiry, composed of seven eminent international jurists, and appeared before the commission as plaintiff. The Commission dealt with a number of controversial issues in international law, including the question of whether the charge of genocide could predate the 1948 convention. The Commission deliberations are examined in detail, frequently with the use of unpublished sources …
