Geek Culture: An Annotated Interdisciplinary Bibliography, William L. Svitavsky

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In recent years, there have been numerous studies on science fiction fans, role-playing games, comic book fans, and the culture of those strongly interested in computers. When a study profiles a group engaged in one of these activities, it is not unusual for the group's participation in the other activities to be mentioned as well. In popular culture (as opposed to studies of popular culture), this overlap has been recognized all along. Each of these groups has been ridiculed as geeks or nerds, and each has subverted those terms into proud self-identification. In his work on media fandom, …

Boat Building, Navigation, And West African Indigenous Knowledge, Will Connell Oct 2001

Boat Building, Navigation, And West African Indigenous Knowledge, Will Connell

African Diaspora ISPs

This paper focuses on the boat building and navigation practices that are currently involved in constructing and navigating both the semi-industrial and artisanal canoe vessels along Ghana's coastline. In order to make a fisherman's journey to sea physically possible, productive, and safe, there are many processes that must take place. Boat construction and navigation are two of the most important of these processes and it is in these two areas that the most changes have taken place since the first fisherman went to sea. By examining these activities in detail, and by comparing my findings with regard to the differences …

Breaking The Chains Of Slavery: How To Continue Healing From A History Of Oppression, Jennifer Parrish Oct 2001

Breaking The Chains Of Slavery: How To Continue Healing From A History Of Oppression, Jennifer Parrish

African Diaspora ISPs

Through studying Ghana's history of oppression and the steps that have been taken to heal from this oppression, my objective was to identify each part of her oppressive past: physica, political, and economical, and through what I had learned in the multiple formal and informal interviews and observations about this oppressive past can continue. I learned through my research that healing is currently happening in Ghana. However, I concluded that only through proper education and financial as well as psychological reparation can complete healing occur. This process will pave the way for Ghana to finally achieve ture freedom on all levels.

'Good Little Bad Girls': Controversy And The Flapper Comedienne, Sara Ross Oct 2001

'Good Little Bad Girls': Controversy And The Flapper Comedienne, Sara Ross

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

In the late 1910s and early 1920s, the American film industry experimented with variety of new and timely female types which in some way challenged the sexual status quo, including the bohemian feminist, the madcap, the baby vamp and the flapper. Whether drawn from the headlines, adapted from best-selling novels or hot Broadway plays, or created for the screen, these characters had the potential to generate both strong box office, and controversy and censorship.

Assessing Observation Focus And Conference Targets Of Cooperating Teachers, Margaret M. Coleman, Murrary F. Mitchell Oct 2001

Assessing Observation Focus And Conference Targets Of Cooperating Teachers, Margaret M. Coleman, Murrary F. Mitchell

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to develop a strategy to assess two facets of the supervisory responsibilities of Cooperating Teachers (CTs): (a) what CTs choose to observe during a lesson when preparing to offer comments to a student teacher and (b) what CTs choose to bring to the attention of student teachers after observing a lesson. The purpose also was to determine the usefulness of the strategy in discriminating among CTs that may have different preparation backgrounds for supervisory duties. Eighteen elementary level CTs participated by individually watching a videotaped lesson, preparing a written critique, and responding to interviews …

In One Place, But Not Another: When The Law Encourages Breastfeeding In Public While Simultaneously Discouraging It At Work, Emily Suski Oct 2001

In One Place, But Not Another: When The Law Encourages Breastfeeding In Public While Simultaneously Discouraging It At Work, Emily Suski

Faculty Publications

In this Essay, the author takes a novel approach to the topic of breastfeeding and work by exploring the trend among states to exempt breastfeeding from criminal indecent exposure laws and comparing this trend to the support, or lack thereof, in laws and policy for breastfeeding at work. The author's comparison reveals that while there is a trend to support breastfeeding in public, there is no such trend in the law to support breastfeeding in the relatively more private work environment.

The author argues that this disparity is both counterintuitive and serves to limit women's choices regarding breastfeeding and work. …

Beyond Trust: Other Dimensions Of Social Capital, Roger A. Lohmann Oct 2001

Beyond Trust: Other Dimensions Of Social Capital, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Many people in the mountain state are unaware that it was a West Virginian, Lyda Judson Hanifan, Superintendent of Rural Schools in the state department of education who introduced the concept of social capital to the world in 1916. Many of those discussing the concept of social capital today focus exclusively on the role of trust. A second important second dimension is networking, and an important third dimension can be called social skill repertories. This latter dimension can be illustrated with reference to the distinctive West Virginia activity of rafting and river craft. It is also evident that many people …
