Higher-Order Improvements Of The Parametric Bootstrap For Markov Processes, Donald W.K. Andrews Oct 2001

Higher-Order Improvements Of The Parametric Bootstrap For Markov Processes, Donald W.K. Andrews

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper provides bounds on the errors in coverage probabilities of maximum likelihood-based, percentile- t , parametric bootstrap confidence intervals for Markov time series processes. These bounds show that the parametric bootstrap for Markov time series provides higher-order improvements (over confidence intervals based on first order asymptotics) that are comparable to those obtained by the parametric and nonparametric bootstrap for iid data and are better than those obtained by the block bootstrap for time series. Additional results are given for Wald-based confidence regions. The paper also shows that k -step parametric bootstrap confidence intervals achieve the same higher-order improvements as …

Ocean Drilling Constrains Carbonate Platform Formation And Miocene Sea Level On The Australian Margin, Alexandra R. Isern, F. S. Anselmetti, P. Blum, Shipboard Scientific Party Oct 2001

Ocean Drilling Constrains Carbonate Platform Formation And Miocene Sea Level On The Australian Margin, Alexandra R. Isern, F. S. Anselmetti, P. Blum, Shipboard Scientific Party

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Carbonate platforms are large geologic structures composed of the remains of formerly living, calcium carbonate‐secreting organisms that can develop in environments ranging from tropical to temperate, and in locations that are free of siliceous sediment to those with significant amounts of sediment from land. Because these platforms are composed of biogenic remains sensitive to changes in environmental conditions such as sea level, wind or currents, nutrient content, and water temperature, the study of carbonate platforms provides fundamental information regarding environmental change in a range of environments. In addition to their high‐quality environmental record, carbonate platforms are often important petroleum reservoirs. …

Tort Recovery For Loss Of A Chance, David A. Fischer Oct 2001

Tort Recovery For Loss Of A Chance, David A. Fischer

Faculty Publications

Tort lawyers in the United States often think of “loss of a chance” as a theory of “probabilistic causation” that only applies to medical malpractice misdiagnosis cases. The theory is that if a physician negligently fails to diagnose a curable disease, and the patient is harmed by the disease, the physician should be liable for causing the “loss of a chance” of a cure. We shall see that if the chance of a cure is less than 50 percent, the plaintiff cannot prove by a preponderance of evidence that the negligence caused the harm, and would recover no damages under …

A Tale Of Three Statutes . . . (And One Industry): A Case Study On The Competitive Effects Of Regulation, Rafael Gely Oct 2001

A Tale Of Three Statutes . . . (And One Industry): A Case Study On The Competitive Effects Of Regulation, Rafael Gely

Faculty Publications

The comparison of the three labor regulatory regimes raises an interesting counterexample to the traditional model of regulation. Instead of adopting a one-size-fits-all model, could a regulatory model be conceptualized where a menu of regulatory options is made available to the target population? Under such an approach those affected by the regulatory regime will choose among the various regulatory options and adopt those that better fit their particular situations. Part IV.B develops the basic parameters of this proposal. The article ends with a brief conclusion.

Swosu Fact Book Fall 2001, Denisa Engelman

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the tenth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. It provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

Testing Hypothesis Of Customer Satisfaction Factors By Statistical Method, Wichan Wannalertsri

Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects

This paper is a part of evaluation and development of customer satisfaction factors for the Peter Stott Center Gymnasium research paper written by a group of graduate student in summer 2001. The purpose of this paper is analysis the information after developed hypotheses, (7 hypotheses), and collected the data. We use the statistic method (Regression Analysis Method and Microsoft Excel 2000 software) for testing and figuring out which hypotheses or factors are significant and relate with customer satisfaction. Some of data in this paper are referred to the evaluation and development of customer satisfaction factors for the Peter Stott Center …

Faith And Health: What Do We Know?, Thomas G. Plante Oct 2001

Faith And Health: What Do We Know?, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

There has been a great deal of interest in the relationship between religious faith and health for thousands of years. Regardless of religious tradition, many have sought religious guidance and spiritual support to help prevent, recover from, or cope with both mental and physical health problems. In fact, it was the healing miracles of Jesus that resulted in so much commotion during the early part of his ministry. "The blind see, the deaf hear, the lame walk…" clearly highlights the relationship between faith and health.

Inflationary Bias In A Simple Stochastic Economy, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth, John Geanakoplos Oct 2001

Inflationary Bias In A Simple Stochastic Economy, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We construct explicit equilibria for strategic market games used to model an economy with fiat money, one nondurable commodity, countably many time- periods, and a continuum of agents. The total production of the commodity is a random variable that fluctuates from period to period. In each period, the agents receive equal endowments of the commodity, and sell them for cash in a market; their spending determines, endogenously, the price of the commodity. All agents have a common utility function, and seek to maximize their expected total discounted utility from consumption. Suppose an outside bank sets an interest rate rho for …

Comparing Wealth Effects: The Stock Market Versus The Housing Market, Karl E. Case, John M. Quigley, Robert J. Shiller Oct 2001

Comparing Wealth Effects: The Stock Market Versus The Housing Market, Karl E. Case, John M. Quigley, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We examine the link between increases in housing wealth, financial wealth, and consumer spending. We rely upon a panel of 14 countries observed annually for various periods during the past 25 years and a panel of U.S. states observed quarterly during the 1980s and 1990s. We impute the aggregate value of owner-occupied housing, the value of financial assets, and measures of aggregate consumption for each of the geographic units over time. We estimate regressions relating consumption to income and wealth measures, finding a statistically significant and rather large effect of housing wealth upon household consumption.
