Thomas Nashe And Popular Conformity In Late Elizabethan England, Jennifer Andersen Oct 2001

Thomas Nashe And Popular Conformity In Late Elizabethan England, Jennifer Andersen

English Faculty Publications

Discovering, Again, The Meaning Of "American", Peter Hegarty Oct 2001

Discovering, Again, The Meaning Of "American", Peter Hegarty

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

In his essay, "The discovery of what it means to be an American," James Baldwin described how his exile in Paris led him to new self-knowledge about his national identity. Baldwin left the US to survive what he called "the color problem," but was surprised to find he shared a sense of being "not at home" with white Americans in Europe. He was American in ways he had not realized. Exile afforded him intellectual freedom, but his growing consciousness of the French-Algerian war led him to understand that "there are no untroubled countries in this fearfully troubled world." Leaving home …

Federal Tax Collection Controversies In The Era Of Drye, Steve R. Johnson Oct 2001

Federal Tax Collection Controversies In The Era Of Drye, Steve R. Johnson

Scholarly Publications

By “tax collection controversies,” I mean cases in which it has been established that the taxpayer owes additional taxes, those taxes remain unpaid, and the IRS is attempting to enforce collection out of the taxpayer’s assets. Such cases are numerous and involve attorneys in general legal practice as well as tax specialists. For example, the taxpayer may be your client for non-tax matters, and may expect you to handle her tax collection controversy as well. Or, your client may not be the taxpayer herself, but instead someone who co-owns property with the taxpayer. Your client expects you to make sure …

Past: Prologue For The Future, Robert H. Colson Oct 2001

Past: Prologue For The Future, Robert H. Colson

Accounting Historians Notebook

As often occurs when someone retires from a position, my predecessor, Jim Craig, left behind as many things as possible to ease the transition of his successor. Among the items that have waited patiently for my attention is a desk drawer filled with cassette tapes of past interviews and symposia. Journal Editor Tom Morris and I went through these tapes and initially decided to discard them because their journalistic purpose had been fulfilled. They had been used to clarify points in interviews and symposia before their publication in the Journal. Because the published version becomes the formal, public record of …
