Accounting Historians Notebook

Integrating accounting history into the classroom is one way to motivate students in financial accounting courses, to help them gain an appreciation of the evolution of accounting, and to challenge them to conceptualize and think constructively [Bloom and Collins, 1988; Coffman et al., 1993]. This paper presents examples of some familiar and some unfamiliar business and accounting concepts as they were taught in the early-nineteenth century to help accounting students and faculty members to gain further insight into how today's practices evolved.

Living In Prison: Evaluating The Deprivation And Importation Models Of Inmate Adaptation, Lisa Danielle Velarde Oct 2001

Living In Prison: Evaluating The Deprivation And Importation Models Of Inmate Adaptation, Lisa Danielle Velarde

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the present study is to broaden knowledge in the area of adjustment to incarceration. Clemmer (1950) proposed that a process known as prisonization develops as inmates adjust to the arduous circumstance of incarceration. Previous research has compared two competing models of adaptation, known as importation and deprivation, as predictors of prisonization. Given that Clemmer (1950) originally hypothesized that prisonization serves as a method of adjusting to the prison environment, the present study explored the relationships among the importation model, the deprivation model, prisonization, and adjustment. In an attempt to take into consideration both person and environmental factors, …

Dissent And Fallay In Dickerson V. United States, Rodney C. Roberts Oct 2001

Dissent And Fallay In Dickerson V. United States, Rodney C. Roberts

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

In his dissent from the majority in Dickerson, Justice Scalia (joined by Justice Thomas) argues that the Court "acts in plain violation of the Constitution when it denies effect to this Act of Congress." This Essay aims to show that an important part of the reasoning in his dissent is fallacious, and insofar as the dissent is influenced by this reasoning, it is without value. Because dissenting opinions generally, and those of the Supreme Court especially, can become valuable in subsequent legal opinions and analyses, and because logic has a clear and important role to play in legal reasoning, it …

Part III argues against the new rule's applicability to felony drug convictions on collateral review. Part IV describes the common law and statutory restrictions that should preclude prisoners from invoking this new procedural rule on collateral attack.

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Judicial Review is the foundation of the rule of law in the United States. Texas V. Cobb, The United States Supreme Court Limits The Sixth Amendment To Exonerate Innocent Suspects-Police Officers Acting In Good Faith, Michael E. Crowder

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Note argues that the Texas Court should adopt the Supreme Court's holding in Cobb on state constitutional claims as well, thus avoiding further entanglement in the "closely related" confusion. For background purposes, Part II reviews the history of the Sixth Amendment right to counsel as provided by the Supreme Court and other lower courts prior to the Supreme Court's decision in Cobb. Part III discusses Cobb's facts and procedural history and examines the analyses of both the Texas Court and the Supreme Court. Part IV analyzes how the questions left unanswered by the Supreme Court, prior to Cobb, resulted …

Zen And The Art Of Stacks Maintenance: Rethinking An Ancient Practice, Margo Smith, Melissa Laning Oct 2001

Zen And The Art Of Stacks Maintenance: Rethinking An Ancient Practice, Margo Smith, Melissa Laning

The Southeastern Librarian

The University of Louisville Libraries’ 2000-2001 Strategic Plan includes specific objectives related to improving the delivery of materials to users. This broad objective covers many strategies ranging from increasing electronic access, improving web page design, using vendor-supplied cataloging records and reallocating funds to high demand subject areas. Undergraduate user demand for monographs remains high. Therefore, reducing the number of days required to shelve new acquisitions and to re-shelve circulated items is an important objective for the library. Leo Egghe notes that, “Shelving and keeping library shelves in order is very important and is basic for the use of a library.” …

Public Access To Legal Resources On The Internet, Alice M. Mccanless Oct 2001

Public Access To Legal Resources On The Internet, Alice M. Mccanless

The Southeastern Librarian

In the not so distant past, before the Internet, doing legal research necessitated access to either a substantial law collection or one of the expensive legal databases, Lexis-Nexis or Westlaw. That limited legal reference to law librarians, some special librarians and reference librarians at large university or public libraries. The Internet has changed all of that, giving any library with an Internet connection access to a wealth of current law, especially at the state and federal level.

Based on a presentation at the Joint Conference of the Georgia Council of Media Organizations and Southeastern Library Association on October 12, 2000.

Testing The Design Of A Library Information Gateway, W. Bede Mitchell, Laura Davidson, Virginia Branch, Lynne Lysiak

The Southeastern Librarian

In autumn of 1999, the library World Wide Websites at Appalachian State University and Georgia Southern University had been in place for more than a year, and many library users reported that certain aspects of the sites’ designs were confusing. In order to alleviate the confusion, librarians from the two universities decided to redesign the sites by determining the greatest sources of confusion. To do this, we studied how patrons used the web sites by way of user-centered usability testing.

This article will discuss the library confidentiality laws of the Southeastern United States, as well as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and the USA PATRIOT Act (popularly known as the antiterrorism statute).
