Children spend much of their youthful energy engaged in play. Indeed, play, in its various forms, represents a serious business – not only for the active participations, but also for students of the phenomenon. To many researchers, play is viewed as a generative fore in children's social, emotional, and cognitive development (see Rubin, Fein, & Vandenberg, 1983; Saracho & Spodek, 1998; Fromberg & Bergen, 1998). This Case Note presents the facts of Montero-Camargo, describes the decision of the Ninth Circuit Court in historical context, and analyzes the effect of the Court's holding. The Case Note argues that while the Ninth Circuit's decision to prohibit the use of race as a factor in determining the reasonableness calculus in traffic stops is progressive in spirit, implementing the decision will be difficult. Thus far, mechanisms designed to limit officers' use of race in traffic stops have been ineffective and have left victims with little recourse, resulting in a disproportionate number of innocent African American and Latino drivers …

Striking A Sincere Balance: A Reasonable Black Person Standard For "Location Plus Evasion" Terry Stops, Mia Carpiniello

Randall Susskind originally proposed the "reasonable African American standard” for Terry stops as a way to minimize racial disparities in Fourth Amendment jurisprudence. This paper will expand upon Susskind's suggested standard within the specific context of "location plus evasion" stops, in which suspects are stopped upon flight in a high-crime neighborhood. Part one will present the reasonable Black person standard in the context of Illinois v. Wardlow, a recent "location plus evasion case." This paper explores issues of psychological plausibility in modeling natural language understanding within Soar, a symbolic cognitive model. It focuses on constructing syntactic and semantic representations in simulated real time, with particular emphasis on word sense disambiguation (WSD). We discuss (i) what level of WSD should be modeled and (ii) how to use resources such as WordNet to inform these models. A preliminary model of coarse-grained WSD is included to show how syntactic, semantic, and other knowledge sources interact in Soar. Finally, we explore issues of interleaving, learning, and integrating other WSD approaches with Soar's native model of learning.

The purpose of this note is introduce a new axiom (called the Descent Axiom) in the theory of r-spin cohomological field theories. This axiom explains the origin of gravitational descendants in this theory. Furthermore, the Descent Axiom immediately implies the Vanishing Axiom, explicating the latter (which has no a priori analog in the theory of Gromov-Witten invariants), in terms of the multiplicativity of the virtual class. We prove that the Descent Axiom holds in the convex case, and consequently in genus zero.

A CO/H₂/O₂/N₂ flame was operated under fuel-rich conditions in a flat flame reactor to provide a high-temperature, oxygen-free environment to study secondary reactions of coal volatiles. The distributions of fuel nitrogen in the devolatilization products of four coals, ranging from high volatile bituminous to lignite, were obtained at gas temperatures ranging from 1159 to 1858 K. It was found that the initial nitrogen released was contained almost exclusively in the tar for all coals. Release of nitrogen from the char as light gases started at a later stage than tar nitrogen release. During secondary reactions, …

U.R. Ananthamurthy is an important Kannada writer who is situated in the navya (modern) literary movement that emerged in Karnataka in the post-independence South Indian context. This modern writer's works provide crucial insights into the postcolonial tensions of tradition-modernity, which figure importantly in modern Kannada literature. They engage with the issues of caste and gender in terms of the conflict between tradition and progress in the modern South Indian cultural discourse. Metamorphic And Tectonic Evolution Of The Hırkadağ Block, Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex, Donna L. Whitney, Yildirim Di̇lek

The Hırkadağ metamorphic block is a NE-SW-trending horst structure that is part of the Kırşehir Massif in the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC). Along its southwestern margin, the block contains upper amphibolite facies metapelitic rocks that record peak metamorphic conditions of 670-710 °C, ~ 7 kbar, as determined by garnet-biotite geothermometry and garnet-sillimanite-plagioclase-quartz, garnet-rutile-sillimanite-ilmenite-quartz, and garnet-rutile-ilmenite-plagioclase-quartz geobarometry. A clockwise pressure-temperature path is inferred from thermobarometric results and analysis of reaction textures among aluminous phases. Following this medium-pressure metamorphism, low-pressure - high-temperature metamorphism resulted in widespread replacement of garnet by cordierite + spinel + sillimanite, partial replacement of spinel by corundum, …

In the study area, southeast of Zara in the Sivas Basin, the Lower-Middle Miocene marine Karacaören Formation consists of a succession of marine sedimentary rocks deposited within two trangressive-regressive cycles. The present study focuses on the facies characteristics, cyclic nature, and significance of the basin-wide distribution of a 100-m-thick gypsiferous sedimentary package overlying an otherwise transgressive segment of the lower sequence, within a marine setting. The typical lithologic expression of the studied sedimentary interval comprises generally fossiliferous mudstones, rare algal limestones and nodular gypsum. Detailed sedimentological observations, combined with palaeontological evidence, indicate that the mudstone intervals were deposited in a …

The Environmental Genome Program intends to identify "susceptibility genes" that would indicate if a person is more vulnerable to cancer or other disease as a result of exposure to certain chemicals in the workplace, the environment, foods, or other products. Research findings and the capability to test persons for such genes are likely to impugn and challenge health policies and regulatory programs that do not take genetic susceptibility into account when conferring health benefits and restricting chemical exposures. Extensional Tectonics And The Geometry Of Related Macroscopic Structures: Field Evidence From The Gediz Detachment, Western Turkey, Hasan Sözbi̇li̇r

The large-scale, low-angle Gediz detachment fault that constitutes the southern margin of the Gediz graben (also known as the Alaşehir graben) has macroscopic structures of extensional origin, such as folds and back-tilted strata. The folds were formed as antiformal and synformal structures with axes both parallel and perpendicular to the extensional direction in their footwalls and hanging-walls, respectively. An extension-parallel antiform-synform pair in the footwall of the Gediz detachment, namely the Oyukkıran antiform and the Keserler synform, are recognized south of Dereköy village (Salihli) on the southern margin of the Gediz graben. The Midas monument, an impressive cult facade located in the southern part of the Eskişehir province in central Anatolia, Turkey, was made within tuffs (white and pink), which now have deterioration problems. In this study, the depth and characteristics of the weathering zones that have developed in the white and pink tuffs have been investigated through thin-section studies, X-ray powder diffractometry, methylene blue adsorption tests, major-element analyses, and some index parameters. It has been determined that the feldspar minerals are mechanically fractured due to weathering. The tuffs contain small amounts of clay minerals.
