ln the first part of the study, the characteristics of the leachate from Ampang landfill, collected before and after the landfill closure was analysed. In general, the characteristics of the Ampang landfill leachate was found to be typical of other landfill leachates in the Klang Valley. The analysis reveals that the Ampang landfill leachate during its active life had high contents of sodium, potassium, chloride and ferum, with concentrations of 687 ppm, 785 ppm, 2500 ppm and 45 ppm respectively. A study was carried out to determine the physico-chemical treatment of the wastewater collected from a soap and detergent factory in Selangor, Malaysia. The study was initiated by determining the characteristics of the wastewater. Treatability studies involving coagulation and flocculation were determined by the jar test method. The parameters of interest were coagulant dosage, pH, mixing intensity, mixing time and settling time. Related Enzymatic Activities In Solid-Substrate Fermentation Of Sago Hampas With Pycnoporus Sanguineus, Rifat Ara Matta

Solid substrate fermentation (SSF) of sago pith residue known as 'hampas' with Pycnoporus sanguineus for enzyme production was carried out. Good growth of Pycnoporus sanguineus in SSF was noted on 'hampas' supplemented with 0.38% urea, 0.2% KH₂PO₄ and 0.05% MgSO₄·7H₂O over a period of 30 days. Xylanase, lignin peroxidase and laccase activities were detected in Pycnoporus sanguineus cultures. Maximum xylanase and laccase activities of 5.26U/g of substrate on day 10 of SSF and 14.35U/g on day 15 of SSF of substrate were obtained respectively. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is closely associated with nasopharyngcal carcinoma (NPC). The role(s) of EBV in NPC remains unclear but antibodies to two EBV proteins namely the viral capsid antigen (VCA) and early antigen (EA), are clinically useful diagnostic markers of NPC. The NPC scenario in Malaysia has been based on studies done on West Malaysian patients but not much has been described for NPC in Sarawak, East Malaysia. This study examines the patterns of career advancement and factors affecting an individual's career advancement. Career advancement is measured using occupational mobility and income mobility. The analyses are based on 1702 young school leavers data for whom are available from the "Transition from School to Work" study, which was carried out between 1989 and 1996. It is common to change occupation or employer or both in the early stages of the career. For every two individuals, one of them changes jobs within the seven years studied. This research was carried out with two primary objectives namely to investigate the relationship between Economic Value Added (EVA) and stock returns and how it compares with conventional accounting measures in explaining stock returns. The results indicate that there is a significant positive relationship between EVA and stock returns. Although the relationship is positive, it is relatively weak. All the accounting performance measures also exhibit a positive relationship with stocks. With regards to the ability of EVA in explaining stock returns, It was better compared to any of the accounting performance measures. The best accounting measure was price earnings ratio. …

Instructional and organisational strategies can improve students' transfer of knowledge and skill to the workplace. Constraints on transfer include: 1. a shortage of teachers who can build transfer inlo programmes; and 2. time span (interval) between teaching of the task and transfer of learning. This exploratory study examines differences between a) sex offenders who entered treatment (N = 117) and those who did not enter treatment (N =51), and b) sex offenders who completed treatment successfully (N = 83) and those who did not complete successfully (N = 22), The two samples were derived from a total sample pool of 199 adult male sex offenders who were sentenced in Western Australia in 1995 and assessed for treatment suitability by the Sex Offender Treatment Unit (SOTU). The success of any mining operation greatly, if not entirely, depends on the accuracy of prediction of recoverable mining reserves. However, prior to mining, knowledge about the distribution of the Selective Mining Unit (SMU) is limited. The SMU represents the volume on which extraction of ore takes place and on which recoverable mining reserves are based. Realistic recoverable reserve estimates can be obtained from the grade-tonnage curve that corresponds to the unknown distribution of the SMU rather than to the distribution of exploration sample data.
