Flow Through Well Screens As A Function Of Pump Intake Location, Kristjan F. Bekker

Greater well efficiency and lower production costs may result from a knowledge of water flow through well screens. Current practice generally locates the intake of a pump in the cased section of the well above the screen. This work shows that placing the pump within the screen will increase well efficiency and therefore lower energy cost. This work also shows a correlation of increased well efficiency with respect to larger sand size, larger screen slot size, and lower flow rates.

The western Cold Turkey Creek structural anomaly is a subsurface structure in Bowman County, North Dakota, near the southern margin of the Williston Basin. The stucture was identified by oil explorationists as a possible impact crater, but its origin remained uncertain. The purpose of this study is to attempt to ascertain if sufficient evidence exists to determine that the anomaly is of impact origin.

The study area was confined to a nine township area surrounding the anomalous stucture in Bowman County, North Dakota. One hundred six oil exploration wells were identified in the area, and well logs were examined and …

Closed loop systems are becoming the preferred method of operating coordinated traffic signal systems. Some of the benefits of a closed loop system include remote controller access, synchronization of controller time clocks, and orderly transition between coordination plans. With ensured time clock synchronization, the coordination of traffic signals becomes more reliable, which leads to optimal vehicle progression through the system. It is, by now, well known that McIntyre's localized carrier-multiplication theory cannot explain the suppression of excess noise factor observed in avalanche photodiodes (APDs) that make use of thin multiplication regions. We demonstrate that a carrier multiplication model that incorporates the effects of dead space, as developed earlier by Hayat et al. provides excellent agreement with the impact-ionization and noise characteristics of thin InP, In/sub 0.52/Al/sub 0.48/As, GaAs, and Al/sub 0.2/Ga/sub 0.8/As APDs, with multiplication regions of different widths. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences of student-athletes' preferred leadership behavior for their coaches based on gender, competition level, task dependence, and task variability. Four hundred and eight male and female student-athletes from four NCAA Division I and six Division II universities expressed their preferences using the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport (RLSS) (Zhang, Jensen, & Mann, 1997). The preference version of the RLSS included six behavior dimensions, autocratic, democratic, positive feedback, situational consideration, social support, and training and instruction behaviors.

The usefulness of the many on-line journals and scientific digital libraries that exist today is limited by the inability to federate these resources through a unified interface. The Open Archive Initiative (OAI) is one major effort to address technical interoperability among distributed archives. The objective of OAI is to develop a framework to facilitate the discovery of content in distributed archives. In this paper, we describe our experience and lessons learned in building Arc, the first federated searching service based on the OAI protocol. Within the context of digital libraries (DLs), we are making information objects "first-class citizens". We decouple information objects from the systems used for their storage and retrieval, allowing the technology for both DLs and information content to progress independently. We believe dismantling the stovepipe of "DL-archive-content" is the first step in building richer DL experiences for users and insuring the long-term survivability of digital information. We show that a large variety of NP-complete problems can be solved efficiently for graphs with 'few' P₄'s. We consider domination problems (domination, total domination, independent domination. connected domination and dominating clique), the Steiner tree problem, the vertex ranking problem, the pathwidth problem, the path cover number problem, the hamiltonian circuit problem, the list coloring problem and the precoloring extension problem. A field survey on maize stemborers, stemborer damage, maize plant physical conditions, and maize yield was conducted in eastern Kenya under natural conditions. Chilo partellus was the dominant stemborer accounting for 89.5 % of all borers. Stemborer damage greatly reduced maize yield, with tunnel lengths greater than 20 cm causing a 40 % reduction of potential yield. A 33 % yield loss was found in plants with more than one stemborer exit hole. Each stemborer (at harvest time) was correlated with a 8-10 % yield loss. Good plant physical characteristics significantly increased grain yield. Principle component analysis showed that stemborer …

The levels of lipophorin, the principal insect haemolymph lipoprotein, were estimated during the development of solitary and gregarious phases of Schistocerca gregaria using single radial immunodiffusion. In the gregarious phase, lipophorin titres ranged from 6.69 ±0.57 mg/ml in the 3rd nymphal instar to 14.42 ±2.04 mg/ml in mature adults. The titres in the solitary phase were 3.33 ± 0.59 mg/ml in the 3rd nymphal instar and 8.44 + 0.67 mg/ml in mature adults. Peak lipophorin titres occurred in mature adults (14.42 ±2.04 mg/ml) and 5th nymphal instar (8.75 ±0.25 mg/ml) for gregarious and solitary locusts, respectively. Three hundred and ninety-two maize fields in the southern arable zone of Kenya were sampled for lepidopteran cereal stemborers from 1996-2000. Chilo partelhis (Swinhoe) was the most abundant stemborer, and was found at all locations with elevations below 1500 m, and at some locations between 1500 and 2300 m. The highest density of C. partelhis was in the semi-arid ecological zone of eastern Kenya. Chilo orichalcociliellus (Strand) was found in the lowland southern coastal area, and a few inland sites on the border of Tanzania in southeastern Kenya. A survey was conducted in the four regions of Tanga, Morogoro, Coast and Dar es Salaam in eastern Tanzania to determine the distribution and species composition of cereal stemborers and their natural enemies. A total of 22 fields were sampled in Tanga, 28 in Morogoro, 17 in Coast and one in Dar es Salaam. Chilo parlellns was found to be the predominant species, accounting for 80 % of all stemborers collected. Bnsseolafnsca, Sesamia calamistis and Chilo orichalcociliellus made up 15,4 and less than 1 % of the stemborers collected respectively. A survey among 240 resource-poor farmers at the Kenya coast indicated that insect pests were considered to be the main production constraint. Over 70% of respondents mentioned stemborers to be the most important insect pest. Unlike the eggs and adults, stemborer larvae and pupae were frequently seen by farmers. Alternative gramineous host plants for pests were common near maize fields and were often not destroyed until after the first rains. Nearly all farmers left dry stems and stubble in the field after harvest. Farmers knew of many methods for controlling stemborers, but only 32 and 56% of farmers in Kilifi …

Fresh plasma from the African eland, Taiirotragus oryx, contains a factor that inhibits the transformation of bloodstream-form Trypanosma bnicei bntcei into procyclic (midgut) forms. Heating of the plasma at 42, 50 and 60 °C for 30 min resulted in a 20, 38 and 40% loss of inhibitor activity respectively, whereas only negligible loss occurred below 42 C. Similarly, one and four freeze-thawing cycles resulted in 32 and 60% loss of activity respectively. Inactivation of the inhibitor activity, which occurred rapidly during storage (for example, 80% loss after 7 days at -20 °C) could not be stopped by the addition of …
