Reversibility Of The Temperature-Dependent Opacity Of Nonfat Mozzarella Cheese, R. I. Dave, Donald J. Mcmahon, Jeff Broadbent, C. J. Oberg Jan 2001

Reversibility Of The Temperature-Dependent Opacity Of Nonfat Mozzarella Cheese, R. I. Dave, Donald J. Mcmahon, Jeff Broadbent, C. J. Oberg

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Salted and unsalted nonfat mozzarella cheese was made by direct acidification and stored at 4 degrees C over 60 d. Changes in cheese opacity were measured by using reflectance L* values while the cheese was heated from 10 to 90 degrees C, then cooled to 10 degrees C, and reheated to 90 degrees C. A characteristic opacity transition temperature (T(OP)) was obtained for each cheese. Both salt content and storage time influenced T(OP). Opacity during heating, cooling, and reheating formed a hysteresis. At d 1, the unsalted cheese became opaque when heated to 20 degrees C, but the salted cheese …

Introduction, Sulochana R. Asirvatham, Corinne Ondine Pache, John Watrous

Classical Studies Faculty Research

This book gathers essays that are all, in one way or another, connected with ancient Greek and Roman religions. The essays cover a wide range—both chronological and geographical—of religious discourse and practice from Classical Athens on to seventeenth-century America via medieval Europe. Thus, there is no attempt at comprehensiveness. Rather, we hope that these essays will serve to problematize some common distinctions that readers generally bring to the study of ancient Greek and Roman religion and its legacy—such as the distinctions between Greece and Rome, Greco-Romans and barbarians, pagans and Christians, religion and politics, and religion and magic, to name …

The Selection Of Narrow Wavebands For Optimizing Water Quality Monitoring On The Great Miami River, Ohio Using Hyperspectral Remote Sensor Data Jan 2001

The Selection Of Narrow Wavebands For Optimizing Water Quality Monitoring On The Great Miami River, Ohio Using Hyperspectral Remote Sensor Data

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Remote sensing data were successfully used to estimate spatial and temporal variation of optical water quality parameters such as chlorophyll a, turbidity and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) of the Great Miami River, Ohio. During the summer of 1999, spectral data were collected with a hand-held spectroradiometer, a laboratory spectrometer and airborne hyperspectral sensors. Approximately 80 km of the Great Miami River were imaged during a flyover with a Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) sensor. Approximately 10 km were imaged during a second flyover to repeat coverage of the urban and industrial influences around the city of Dayton, Ohio. Instream measurements …

The prevention of fatality from disease has long been a goal of medical and food sciences. In the field of cervical cancer research, the early detection of cancerous cells via Pap smear screening has proven to be an effective tool in combating cancer related deaths. However the sheer magnitude of Pap smears needing diagnosis has led to a decrease in efficiency and accuracy. In a different field, a similar problem persists. The goal of food science is to provide mass quantities of food that is safe for consumption. The amount of food prepared for dispersal is staggering in that it …

Team Player Styles, Team Design Variables And Team Work Effectiveness In Egypt, Ghada Awed Hassan El-Kot

Plymouth Business School Theses

The literature has revealed few studies of management in Arab countries in general and particularly in Egypt. Many Egyptian organisations implemented the team concept a number of years ago, however, there do not appear to be any studies investicitaýt inc",D team work effectiveness in Egypt. The literature review and the findings of a pilot study emphasised the need for empirical research in team work in Egypt. Team effectiveness models are examined in order to identify the factors that may enhance team effectiveness in Egypt. Team behavioural models are also examined to identify the importance of balanced team membership and its …

Introducing Integrated Performance Measurement Into Small And Medium Sized Enterprises, Melanie Hudson Jan 2001

Introducing Integrated Performance Measurement Into Small And Medium Sized Enterprises, Melanie Hudson

Plymouth Business School Theses

The thesis extends current knowledge and understanding of integrated performance measurement (PM) development into the context of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The research builds on existing knowledge of integrated PM development approaches and identifies the context-specific factors which affect its introduction into SMEs. These are used to design, develop and validate a new, continuous improvement based approach for the development of integrated PM systems, which is specifically designed for use in SMEs. First, a conceptual model of criteria for integrated PM development is synthesised from the literature and the characteristics of SMEs are established. An evaluation of current …

Measurement Of Physical Discipline Practices: Is It Potato Or Potata? Tomato Or Tomata? Or, Should We Call The Whole Thing Off? An Analysis Of The Different Measures Of Physical Discipline On The Intergenerational Transmission Of Violence Hypotheses, Jeremy D. Ball Jan 2001

Ball

Student Work

The intergenerational transmission of violence hypothesis has been stated in four general ways: “abuse breeds abuse,” “abuse breeds crime,” “abuse breeds violent crime,” and “abuse breeds a life of crime.” Scholars have disagreed as to whether abuse is a dichotomous concept or not- that is, abuse or no abuse. Some researchers have suggested that abuse is on a continuum of severity and frequency of physical discipline ranging from a slap or a spank to the more violent abusive practices such as beatings and burnings. The current study examines the intergenerational transmission of violence hypotheses using this broader concept. The question …

The Effects Of Television On The Social Construction Of Body Images By Five- And Six-Year-Old Girls, Kristine M. Gruidl Jan 2001

The Effects Of Television On The Social Construction Of Body Images By Five- And Six-Year-Old Girls, Kristine M. Gruidl

Student Work

Television images influence individuals (Elliott and Slater, 1980). Cognitive learning theory suggests that during the first five to six years of life, children’s behavior patterns will be set (Donohue, 1975). Television has the potential to be a positive influence on learning. However, typical American media and television have been a negative influence on most children (Williams, 1981).

A 1996 study reported thirty-nine-point-one percent of first graders do not like their appearance and would change their looks, given the opportunity. It has been suggested the mass media are responsible and have taught children fat is bad and thin is good (Flannery-Schroeder …

Diabetes mellitus is a highly prevalent condition, afflicting an estimated 6% of the United States adult population. It is also a complex condition to manage. Dietary, exercise, and drug therapies are essential for reducing the risk of various neurologic and vascular diseases related to disease progression. Tight control of blood glucose as achieved through intensive pharmacologic therapy has been shown to decrease the risk of developing several types of diabetic complications. Success in achieving tight blood glucose control is contingent upon adherence to the prescribed hypoglycemic drug regimen , a behavior known to often be sub-optimal. The objectives of this …

A Mechanistic Study Of Flow And Compression Behavior Of Pharmaceutical Powders, Yogita Desai Jan 2001

A Mechanistic Study Of Flow And Compression Behavior Of Pharmaceutical Powders, Yogita Desai

Open Access Dissertations

Majority of the drug substances are administered to patients in the form of oral solid dosage forms. The drug substance is mixed with excipients and the resulting powder blend is compressed into tablets. For a pharmaceutical powder to be compressed into uniform solid dosage forms, it is essential that the powder blend has good flow and compaction properties. The flow and compression properties of a pharmaceutical blend depend on the physicochemical properties of the individual components and their relative proportions in the mixture. Poor compressibility along with the poor flowable nature of most of the pharmaceutical mixtures poses tremendous challenges …

A Study Of Factors That Influence Academic Success Of Black American Middle School Males, Harvey S. Hicks Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The Black American male has had to face and endure many physical, emotional, and psychological hardships since his ancestors arrived in this country as slaves. One of those hardships has been his constant status as a second-class citizen. Throughout his history in America, the Black male has received unequal pay, unequal justice, unequal medical care, unequal treatment, and unequal education. Yet, despite the circumstances and the odds, there have been Black males who have achieved in many fields. However, even today, in the field of education, achieving academically is not an endeavor most Black males pursue.

This study investigated some …

Sustainable development (SD) is premised on the inescapable and integral role played by humans in shaping and impacting the natural world and has been recognized as a foundational norm of international environmental law and policy. Ecologicalism - an outlook that embraces a comprehensive approach to interdependent natural and human systems - provides the conceptual underpinnings for a creative and integrated environmental management philosophy for implementing SD. This Article argues that the daunting task of defining and applying such an integrated approach and philosophy to the multiple interacting changes affecting planetary life support systems can benefit from the U.S. experience in …

Towards A Constitutional Architecture For Cooperative Federalism, Philip J. Weiser Jan 2001

Towards A Constitutional Architecture For Cooperative Federalism, Philip J. Weiser

Publications

In this Article, Professor Weiser calls for a new conception of federal-state relations to justify existing political practice under cooperative federalism regulatory programs. In particular, Professor Weiser highlights how Congress favors cooperative federalism programs--that combine federal and state authority in creative ways--and has rejected the dual federalism model of regulation--with separate spheres of state and federal authority that current judicial rhetoric often celebrates. Given the increasing dissonance between prevailing political practice and judicial rhetoric, courts will ultimately have to confront three fault lines for current cooperative federalism programs: the legal source of authority for state agencies to implement federal law, …
