Comparison Of Safety Knowledge Transfer In Employees From Oscar-Ma Yer Davenport Using Computer-Aided And Traditional Methods Of Training Delivery, Barbara L. Durant

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Developments in the use of technology in computing and telecommunications have created a demand in the workplace for individuals with advanced sets of skills. Due to these developments there has been an increase in the range of options in training design and delivery. The problem prompting this study was that it was unknown if the computer-aided instruction (CAI) was an effective means to deliver the necessary safety knowledge.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of computer-based training (CBT) versus the traditional lecture method. The research hypothesis for the study was; "Is there a significant difference in …

Comparison Of Reading Levels Of Students In A Computer Assisted Instructional Reading Program To Students In A Traditional Reading Program, Raquel Chin Jan 2001

Comparison Of Reading Levels Of Students In A Computer Assisted Instructional Reading Program To Students In A Traditional Reading Program, Raquel Chin

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem for this study was no available data documenting the impact of the computer assisted instruction (CAI) program on the reading levels of students in Pines Middle School's eighth grade reading program. Previous studies have suggested that students in CAI reading programs do increase their reading levels.

The research question for this study was "Will students participating in the computer assisted instruction reading program achieve significantly higher reading levels, as determined by the STAR assessment, than students instructed in the traditional reading program?" The quasi-experimental research methodology was applied because the investigator compared treatment effects in a setting that …

The Use Of Cooperative Learning Strategies To Effect Changes In The Level Of Participation In Social Studies Option Classes Of Pre-Service Teachers, D. Norma Fisher Jan 2001

The Use Of Cooperative Learning Strategies To Effect Changes In The Level Of Participation In Social Studies Option Classes Of Pre-Service Teachers, D. Norma Fisher

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this applied dissertation was to involve pre-service teachers who took courses in the Social Studies Option, in a program of cooperative learning activities in an effort to increase their participation in the learning process. The library and other resources that were needed to facilitate students' independent learning were inadequate. The students relied on note-taking from lectures, and those notes were repeated in written assignments and also memorized and repeated in written examinations. Although Internet linked computers were available; they were inadequate to meet the needs of the college community. Twenty-five Social Studies Option Students were able to …

Development And Implementation Of A Program To Increase Communication And Collaboration Among Early Adopters Of Instructional Technology At The Elementary Level, Debbie Lind Jan 2001

Development And Implementation Of A Program To Increase Communication And Collaboration Among Early Adopters Of Instructional Technology At The Elementary Level, Debbie Lind

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to provide a means of communication for teachers at several elementary schools. Isolation is a common issue facing K-12 teachers sustained by the organizational constraints of traditional methods of education. Few opportunities for interaction and collaboration were provided by the school district. Interaction is needed to change the image of teachers from independent instructors to members of a community of practice like other professions.

The writer developed an Intranet site that utilized synchronous and asynchronous communication technology to create an online learning community. To facilitate collaboration the discussion board and chat facility were supplemented with …

A Conservative Defense Of Romer V. Evans, Dale Carpenter Jan 2001

A Conservative Defense Of Romer V. Evans, Dale Carpenter

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

In his argument for an alternative conservative response to Romer v. Evans, the author outlines the majority and dissenting opinions in Evans to identify what he takes to be the decision's import. Next, he outlines some of the main themes of conservative political and legal thought, concentrating especially on Edmund Burke. He then argues the common conception of Burke as an intransigent defender of the status quo and of present traditions and practices is a misreading of him. Finally, he discusses the conservative underpinnings for Evans in light of this intellectual history, with an emphasis on the profoundly conservative instincts …

Regulation By Bootstrap: Contingent Management Of Hazardous Wastes Under The Resource Conservation And Recovery Act, Jeffrey M. Gaba Jan 2001

Regulation By Bootstrap: Contingent Management Of Hazardous Wastes Under The Resource Conservation And Recovery Act, Jeffrey M. Gaba

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

In the last few years, EPA has increasingly employed the questionable technique of “contingent management” to regulate wastes under the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) in order to limit the costs and avoid the stigma of hazardous waste classification. Through the technique of contingent management, EPA has exempted materials from classification as hazardous waste on the condition that the materials are managed in the particular manner specified in the regulation. The ultimate bootstrap, contingent management allows EPA to regulate non-hazardous wastes over which it has no statutory jurisdiction. Perhaps more troubling, contingent management allows EPA to avoid the …

Biennialism And Vernalization-Promoted Flowering In Hyoscyamus Niger: A Comparison With Arabidopsis, Michael Schläppi, Monica Patel

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

There are genetic similarities between the biennial growth habit of Hyoscyamus niger (H. niger) and winter annual ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana, including the response to demethylating agents. One focus of our research group at Marquette is to determine whether FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC) homologs or FLC-related MADS-box genes are involved in biennialism of H. niger. This review also summarizes our initial characterization of expression profiles of 4 groups of H. niger MADS-box genes. Our results suggest that B-class floral homeotic gene homologs of H. niger are differentially expressed in flowers of annual and …

The current research examined whether mock jurors make differential assessments of guilt of defendants based on inclusion or exclusion of confession evidence and type of coercion to determine if jurors' behavioral reactions to confession evidence could be predicted. Hypotheses addressed effects of various factors on jurors' decisions of verdicts regarding defendants' guilt or innocence and their certainty of these verdicts: inclusion of confession evidence, type of coercion used in obtaining confessions, admissible or inadmissible presentation of confession evidence, and influence of potential predictor variables. Predictor variables assessed included participants' Belief in a Just World, Spheres of Control, New Authoritarianism, and …

The Rejection Of The Manege Tradition In Early Modern England: "Equestrian Elegance At Odds With English Sporting Tradition", Elizabeth Pope Simmons Jan 2001

The Rejection Of The Manege Tradition In Early Modern England: "Equestrian Elegance At Odds With English Sporting Tradition", Elizabeth Pope Simmons

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Renaissance creativity and obsession with classical traditions spawned a new form of horsemanship called the manege in sixteenth-century Europe. This study deals with England's rejection of the courtly horsemanship despite the dismal state of the nation's equestrian affairs. Tudor and Stuart monarchs utilized royal influence to attempt change - from legislative refmms to the horses - but no specific monarchical effort proved immediately effective. The significance of royal influence is seen in the continued importation of quality stock and in royal support for equestrian-related sports. Both enriched equine bloodlines and promoted the development of sporting tradition in England. While, with …

Applying E-Commerce Techniques To Public School Software, Michael Lapke Jan 2001

Applying E-Commerce Techniques To Public School Software, Michael Lapke

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Applying e-commerce technology to public school software is a process that involves an extensive and thorough analysis. There are typically three groups of users who would use such a system: teachers, administrators and parents. Teachers need a system that nearly duplicates the software that they are currently using to enter, store, and calculate their grades, while school administrators and parents need to student and teacher's information. This is where the use of e-commerce technology comes in very nicely.

The analysis performed for this project involved extensive interviews with the expert user set and a walk-through of the current system. The …

A Framework For Performance And Value Assessment Of E-Business Systems In Corporate Travel Distribution, A.M. Chircu, Robert J. Kauffman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This chapter proposes and illustrates a framework that the authors call the value life cycle for e-commerce systems. Based on recent research results that relate to technology investments in the corporate travel industry and related theoretical and empirical perspectives, the authors lay out the corporate travel e-commerce system solutions value life cycle. The perspective involves estimating the maximum value that that an organization can obtain by implementing an e-commerce system in a specific industry and competitive environment. It also considers multiple factors that act as value contingencies for the implementation process. These create barriers to value accrual and to …

Social Logic As Business Logic: Guanxi, Trustworthiness And The Embeddedness Of Chinese Business Practices, Wai Keung Chung, Gary Hamilton Jan 2001

Social Logic As Business Logic: Guanxi, Trustworthiness And The Embeddedness Of Chinese Business Practices, Wai Keung Chung, Gary Hamilton

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This chapter explores the nature of Chinese business practices by looking at their social foundations. We argue that the use of an inter-subjective logic based on the norms of social relationships provides an institutional foundation for economic transactions in Chinese business settings. The logic of social relationships-or what we call guanxi logic-is embedded in daily practices of the Chinese business community. Rather than making economic decisions less "economic", relational rules embedded in guanxi places interpersonal business transactions within a prescriptive framework, thereby increasing the calculability of economic outcomes. Guanxi logic is, therefore, a socially meaningful way to enhance economic rationality. …

Probabilistic Principles In Unsupervised Learning Of Visual Structure: Human Data And A Model, Shimon Edelman, Benjamin P. Hiles, Hwajin Yang, Nathan Intrator Jan 2001

Probabilistic Principles In Unsupervised Learning Of Visual Structure: Human Data And A Model, Shimon Edelman, Benjamin P. Hiles, Hwajin Yang, Nathan Intrator

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

To find out how the representations of structured visual objects depend on the co-occurrence statistics of their constituents, we exposed subjects to a set of composite images with tight control exerted over (1) the conditional probabilities of the constituent fragments, and (2) the value of Barlow's criterion of "suspicious coincidence" (the ratio of joint probability to the product of marginals). We then compared the part verification response times for various probe/target combinations before and after the exposure. For composite probes, the speedup was much larger for targets that contained pairs of fragments perfectly predictive of each other, compared to those …

Dynamics Of Pancake Vortices In A Finite Stack Of Superconducting Copper Oxide Layers, Mariam Mustafa Ahmad Al Marzoqi Jan 2001

Dynamics Of Pancake Vortices In A Finite Stack Of Superconducting Copper Oxide Layers, Mariam Mustafa Ahmad Al Marzoqi

Theses

The high temperature superconductors are very promising materials in a wide range of applications, starting from the electricity power supply. They play a lifesaving function through imaging systems. Even major internet and communication advances depend on these materials.

Superconductivity in these materials occurs particularly in the copper-oxide planes. However, since these materials are type-II superconductors, magnetic fields can penetrate these materials in quantized amounts of flux called vortices without destroying completely superconductivity, but producing some resistance, due to vortex motion. In order to overcome the resistance problem, vortices must be pinned to prevent their motion and hence eliminate the resistance. …

Mentors Or Friends: Confucius And Aristotle On Equality And Ethical Development In Friendship, Sor-Hoon Tan Jan 2001

Mentors Or Friends: Confucius And Aristotle On Equality And Ethical Development In Friendship, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In Thinking from the Han, David Hall and Roger Ames compare Plato's - and Confucius's views of friendship in relation to the question of transcendence and arrive at the sad conclusion that Socrates and Confucius could not be friends. "Socratic irony would not allow the inequality Confucius requires as a means of self-betterment. Confucius would not permit he and Socrates to hold all things in common." Along the way, they articulate an understanding of Confucius’ view of friendship as "a one-directional relationship in which one extends oneself by association with one who has attained a higher level of realization." Hall …

Education And Citizenship In Diverse Societies, Chandran Kukathas Jan 2001

Education And Citizenship In Diverse Societies, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The question of the state's role in the control of sponsorship of education is addressed in the light of liberal political principles designed to keep peace and enforce toleration in culturally diverse societies. Some contemporary, self-described liberal philosophers argue for a much more substantial educational role for the state than liberal principles will really allow. Brian Barry's argument for that role assumes that the state can prescribe answers to controversial questions regarding the truth and the good life in which a truly liberal state would take no interest. Stephen Macedo is more accommodating to religious diversity than Barry, but his …

Can A Liberal Society Tolerate Illiberal Elements?, Chandran Kukathas Jan 2001

Can A Liberal Society Tolerate Illiberal Elements?, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Libertarians believe that all individuals are entitledto live as they choose, free from interference byother persons or by the state. They also believethat in the absence of such interference, whether bygovernment or other agents of the state intent ondesigning or planning for society as a whole, order willnonetheless prevail. Given the freedom to contract andexchange, markets will coordinate the production anddistribution of goods — and indeed do so better thanany other institution can.
