Carbon isotopic data of interstitial dissolved CO2 (ΣCO2), CO2 gas, and methane show that a variety of microbial diagenetic processes produce the observed isotopic trends. Anaerobic methane oxidation (AMO) is an important process near the sulfate-methane interface (SMI) that strongly influences the isotopic composition of ΣCO2 in the sulfate reduction and upper methanogenic zones, which in turn impacts methane isotopic composition. Dissolved CO2 and methane are maximally depleted in 3C near the SMI, where C values are as light as –31.8‰ and –101‰ PDB for ΣCO2 and methane, respectively. CO2 reduction links the CO2 and methane pools in the methanogenic …
Evaluating Hungary's Mixed-Member Electoral System, Kenneth Benoit
Evaluating Hungary's Mixed-Member Electoral System, Kenneth Benoit
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The electoral system adopted by Hungary in 1989 represents a monument to the potential for institutional design through bargaining to produce complex yet stable institutions. The key compromise reached during this bargaining process was the decision to use a mixed-member system, electing a roughly even number of representatives from both majoritarian single-seat districts (SSDs) and from multi-seat, list proportional representation (PR) districts. This decision established Eastern Europe's first mixed-member electoral system, a format that was to become common in post-communist electoral systems. In its ten-year existence, Hungary's mixed-member system has operated in three elections and seen three different governments come …
Simulation Methodologies For Political Scientists, Kenneth Benoit
Simulation Methodologies For Political Scientists, Kenneth Benoit
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this brief article I identify and characterize the variety of simulation methodologies relevant to political science research. Having identified them, I then recount a light-hearted tale of one successful application of a computer simulation to a real world problem of enormous significance. Extending the discussion to other examples, I discuss some of the main issues and benefits in simulation models for political science. Finally, I identify some software tools and additional resources for those who would like to learn more about using simulation methods for their own work.

International Studies In The 21st Century: Civilization, Ethics And Transnational Relations, William A. Callahan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Since the end of the Cold War, the world has been reorganizing itself, moving away from the global issues to other forms of international politics. There has been a shift in the study of world politics as well. Some have tried to refashion Realism to again concentrate on nation-states in perpetual conflict.

Ontologies And Electronic Commerce, Dieter Fensel, Deborah L. Mcguinness, Ellen Schulten, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim, Guanghao Yan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Ontologies are the first step toward realizing the full power of online e-commerce. Ontologies enable machine-understandable semantics of data, and building this data infrastructure will enable completely new kinds of automated services. Software agents can search for products, form buyer and seller coalitions, negotiate about products, or help automatically configure products and services according to specified user requirements. The combination of machine-processable semantics of data based on ontologies and the development of many specialized reasoning services will bring the Web to its full power. The authors discuss: taxonomies; information sources; future issues; business viewpoints; the e-marketplace; and B2B e-commerce standardisation …
Unified Modeling Language: A Complexity Analysis, Keng Siau, Q. Cao
Unified Modeling Language: A Complexity Analysis, Keng Siau, Q. Cao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the standard visual modeling language for Object Oriented (OO) systems development, but it has been criticized for its complexity, inconsistent semantics, and ambiguous constructs. A set of complexity indices for UML and the nine diagramming techniques in UML was compiled recently. The complexity analysis is formulated based on the number of constructs, associations, roles, and so forth, in a modeling method. We argue that this set of metrics provides an indication of the theoretical complexity of the modeling methods. On the other hand, the theoretical complexity of the modeling methods does not necessarily relate to …

The production and semi-leptonic decay of heavy quarks have been studied in the photoproduction process e+p → e+ + dijet + e- + X with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.5 pb-1. Events with photon-proton centre-of-mass energies, Wγp, between 134 and 269 GeV and a photon virtuality, Q2, less than 1 GeV2 were selected requiring at least two jets of transverse energy Ejet1(2)T > 7(6) GeV and an electron in the final state. The electrons were identified by employing the ionisation energy loss measurement. The contribution of beauty quarks was determined using the transverse momentum of …

The cross section and the proton structure function F2 for neutral current deep inelastic e+p scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 30 pb-1. The data were collected in 1996 and 1997 at a centre-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. They cover the kinematic range 2.7 < Q2 < 30000 GeV2 and 6-10-5 < cursive Greek chi < 0.65. The variation of F2 with cursive Greek chi and Q2 is well described by next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD as implemented in the DGLAP evolution equations.
Religious Fundamentalism And Gender Differences, Herbert W. Helm, John M. Berecz, Emily A. Nelson
Religious Fundamentalism And Gender Differences, Herbert W. Helm, John M. Berecz, Emily A. Nelson
Faculty Publications
The role of religious fundamentalism and its relationship to shame and guilt was evaluated in 107 students who attend a church-sponsored university. A number of personality measures were given and gender differences were analyzed. The role of externalization was similar for males in this sample to that of earlier studies. However, it was found that females showed positive correlations between externalization and both shame and guilt. For females, more fundamentalistic religious training may help to contribute to an external orientation at the expense of identifying with a personal religion, and appropriate guilt. © 2001 Human Sciences Press, Inc.

A study of the v̄-jet mass spectrum in e+p→v̄X events at a center-of-mass energy 300 GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider at DESY using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb-1. The mass spectrum is in good agreement with that expected from standard model processes over the v̄-jet mass range studied. No significant excess attributable to the decay of a narrow resonance is observed. By using both e+p→>e+X and e+p-vX data, mass-dependent limits are set on the s-channel production of scalar and vector resonant states. Couplings to first-generation quarks are considered and limits are …

These behaviors fall into six categories: (1) behvaiors that result in unintentional and intentional injuries, (2) tobacco use, (3) alcohol and other drug use, (4) sexual behaviors that result in HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and unintended pregnancies, (5) dietary behaviors, and …
Development Of A Process For Evaluating Locomotive Engineer Classroom Training At Amtrak, John A. Ward
Development Of A Process For Evaluating Locomotive Engineer Classroom Training At Amtrak, John A. Ward
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Amtrak did not have a written process for evaluating its locomotive engineer classroom-training programs. The purpose of this study was to develop a process based on relevant literature, evaluation models of other railroads, and feedback from formative and summative committees. There was one research question: What is an appropriate evaluation process to develop for the Amtrak locomotive engineer classroom-training programs?
The study followed eight procedures, including reviewing appropriate literature, drafting an evaluation process, obtaining feedback from formative and summative committees, and submitting the evaluation process to Amtrak. The evaluation process developed by the study resulted in two documents: policy and …

Development Of A Teacher Pre-Service Education Program Emphasizing The Needs Of The Public Schools For The 21 St Century, Sandra K. Vance
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Numerous issues will be important regarding education in the years ahead. Few issues, however, will be as important as the need to improve secondary education to prepare students to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. This project was ( a) to create a secondary school curriculum that would effectively address the needs of students in 2010 and (b) to develop a preservice teacher education program, an induction program and a staff development program based on the curriculum identified in the research to better assist teachers in preparing secondary school students to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.
