Hawaiian Freshwater Polychaeta: A Potentially Substantial Trophic Component Of Stream Depositional Habitats, M. Eric Benbow, Albert J. Burky, Carl M. Way

Biology Faculty Publications

In this paper we report the widespread occurrence of large annelids (Polychaeta: Nereididae) in Hawaiian stream depositional habitats, drawing attention to the lack of knowledge of Hawaiian stream energetics. Specimens of Namalycastis sp. were collected from five Hawaiian Islands from May–July 1995 and from the island of Maui from July–December 1999 and April–July 2000. Most specimens collected were N. hawaiiensis, while two specimens of N. abiuma were collected from a single site on the island of Molokai. Specimens were collected from elevations ranging from 3–240 m; several collections were from sites above at least one major (> 15 m …

Special Studies Program Of The Pilot Health Project: West Bank And Gaza, Mahmoud Shaheen, Laila Nawar, Dale Huntington, Sahar Hegazi

Reproductive Health

The Special Studies Program was implemented as part of the Pilot Health Project in the West Bank and Gaza to provide small grants to Palestinian researchers, research organizations, and advanced graduate students to conduct research that examines critical reproductive health topics related to maternal and child health care, including family planning. The research implemented under the Special Studies Program covered a range of topics including male involvement in reproductive health, clients' satisfaction with family planning programs, the relationship between early marriage and the delivery of premature infants, factors affecting compliance for iron supplementation, and diabetes mellitus during pregnancy. The research …

Diverse Realities: Understanding Sexually Transmitted Infections And Hiv In India, Sarah Hawkes, K.G. Santhya

Reproductive Health

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, currently have high salience on the health care agendas of many countries, including India. Strategies for their control are ideally based on a number of well-recognised principles. These include: assessments of the burden of disease; the availability of interventions at policy and programme levels, to influence behaviour change and technical ‘solutions’; and the calculated cost-effectiveness of these interventions. In the case of India, data to inform these principles are often lacking in the case of STI control. In this paper we have reviewed the evidence base for STI control in the Indian context. The …

Recognition Of Bromus Richardsonii And B. Ciliatus: Evidence From Morphology, Cytology, And Dna Fingerprinting (Poaceae: Bromeae), Paul M. Peterson, Jacques Cayouette, Yasas S. N. Ferdinandez, Bruce Coulman, Ralph E. Chapman Jan 2001

Recognition Of Bromus Richardsonii And B. Ciliatus: Evidence From Morphology, Cytology, And Dna Fingerprinting (Poaceae: Bromeae), Paul M. Peterson, Jacques Cayouette, Yasas S. N. Ferdinandez, Bruce Coulman, Ralph E. Chapman

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Since our goal was to determine characteristic differences between Bromus richardsonii and B. ciliates, a discriminate analysis (DA), principal components analysis (PCA), multidimensional scaling (MDS), bivariate analysis, and an amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) analysis were undertaken on 93 herbarium specimens and 31 field-collected populations. A cytological survey of B. ciliates, B. richardsonii, and B. mucroglumis confirm previous reports that the first species is diploid (2n = 14) and the latter two are tetraploid (2n = 28). All taxa were correctly classified in the DA and important characters for each of the species were identified. Bromus …

Student-On-Student Harassment: A New Paradigm For Canadian Human Rights Legislation, William Georgas Jan 2001

Student-On-Student Harassment: A New Paradigm For Canadian Human Rights Legislation, William Georgas

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Canadian school boards have recently begun to find themselves in the position of respondent under human rights complaints filed for cases of student-on-student harassment. This has raised serious questions regarding the extent of school board liability for the acts of students. It is possible for the current human rights legislation in Nova Scotia, used as a model in this discussion, to have jurisdiction over peer harassment; however, the procedural and substantive obstacles that need to be overcome make it a far from satisfactory avenue for a victim to pursue. The recent United States Supreme Court case of Davis v. Monroe …
