2000 Legislative Review, Alicia Finigan Jan 2001

2000 Legislative Review, Alicia Finigan

Animal Law Review

Our third Legislative Review reports the passage and de- feat of several state and federal, administrative and legislative actions. Ms. Laurie Fulkerson has researched and written on four major pieces of federal legislation; Mr. Chris Brown has discussed additional federal advances, and a review of state initiatives which both advance and undermine animal welfare; Ms. Amy Baggio has reviewed the passage of state anti-cruelty statues. Finally, Ms. Alicia Finigan has reported on the United State's Pelly Amendment certification of Japan for violating the International Whaling Commission's resolution to cease its illusory "research whaling" for minke, sperm and Bryde's whales.

Dead Dog Running: The Cruelty Of Greyhound Racing And The Bases For Its Abolition In Massachusetts, Erin N. Jackson Jan 2001

Dead Dog Running: The Cruelty Of Greyhound Racing And The Bases For Its Abolition In Massachusetts, Erin N. Jackson

Animal Law Review

Under the guise of sport, greyhound racing persists in Massachusetts and sixteen other states, despite the industry's notoriety for animal abuse. The cruel practices employed in greyhound racing, including the culling of litters; the use of live lures in training; the provision of substandard living conditions and care; and the systemic, premature killing of greyhounds bear undeniable likeness to the barbarity perpetrated in the illicit animal fighting sports of bullfighting, dogfighting, and cockfighting. Yet, greyhound racing masquerades in the Commonwealth as an innocuous pastime, even though the industry-wide, calculated refusal to provide care for and consequent killing of throngs of …

Computing A Diameter-Constrained Minimum Spanning Tree, Ayman Mahmoud Abdalla Jan 2001

Computing A Diameter-Constrained Minimum Spanning Tree, Ayman Mahmoud Abdalla

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In numerous practical applications, it is necessary to find the smallest possible tree with a bounded diameter. A diameter-constrained minimum spanning tree (DCMST) of a given undirected, edge-weighted graph, G, is the smallest-weight spanning tree of all spanning trees of G which contain no path with more than k edges, where k is a given positive integer. The problem of finding a DCMST is NP-complete for all values of k; 4 ≤ k ≤ (n - 2), except when all edge-weights are identical.

A DCMST is essential for the efficiency of various distributed mutual exclusion algorithms, where …

An Introduction To The Model Standards Of Practice For Family And Divorce Mediation, Andrew Schepard Jan 2001

An Introduction To The Model Standards Of Practice For Family And Divorce Mediation, Andrew Schepard

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

On February 19, 2001, upon the recommendation of both the Family Law (FLS) and Dispute Resolution Sections, the American Bar Association's House of Delegates adopted the Model Standards of Practice for Family and Divorce Mediation (“Model Family Mediation Standards” or “Model Standards”), which are published in this issue of the Family Law Quarterly.

The aim of the Model Family Mediation Standards is to promote public confidence in an evolving, interdisciplinary profession by defining good mediation practice. The family mediation profession (which includes many lawyers) created the Model Family Mediation Standards in consultation with the family …

La Révolution Scientifique, Les Révolutions, Et L'Histoire Des Sciences. Comment Ernest Coumet Nous A Libérés De L'Héritage D'Alexandre Koyré, Marco Panza Jan 2001

La Révolution Scientifique, Les Révolutions, Et L'Histoire Des Sciences. Comment Ernest Coumet Nous A Libérés De L'Héritage D'Alexandre Koyré, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

A Comparison Of Eating Patterns And Nutrition Knowledge Of Athletes And Non-Athletes At Northern Illinois University, Thomas J. Shields

Honors Capstones

Objectives. This study compared eating patterns, basic nutrition knowledge, patterns of food label utilization, and dietary supplement use of athletes and non-athletes at Northern Illinois University (NIU). Methods. A questionnaire was administered to volunteers from NIU5s men’s swimming (n=19), women’s swimming (n=21), and women’s gymnastics teams (n=13), as well as a control group of males (n=17) and females (n=41). Results. Nearly all of the athletes (92.5%) reported that their physical activity level was either heavy or exceptional, while only 58.5% of FC and 58.8% of MC subjects reported similarly. The MS group reported eating most often, at 3.1±0.9 meals per …

Dna Double-Strand Break Induction By Gamma Radiation, Liam M. Miller Jan 2001

Dna Double-Strand Break Induction By Gamma Radiation, Liam M. Miller

Honors Capstones

Radiation is a powerful tool in fighting breast cancer. However, the mechanism of cell killing is not fully understood. It is therefore important to characterize radiation so that it may be used more effectively. In the present study the relationship between gamma radiation and DNA double strand break induction is investigated. DNA double strand breaks are the focus of this study because the biological consequences of DNA double-strand breaks are significant, and can result in cell-killing/ apotosis (Heilmann 1995). DNA double strand break induction is surveyed using a constant-field gel electrophoresis approach previously described by J. Heilmann (Heilmann 1995). A …

Does Parental Use Of Shaming, As A Punishment During Childhood, Adversely Affect Attachment Relationships During Adolescence?, Denice M. Mock Jan 2001

Does Parental Use Of Shaming, As A Punishment During Childhood, Adversely Affect Attachment Relationships During Adolescence?, Denice M. Mock

Honors Capstones

The familiar, sinking, demoralizing, feelings of shame, how many times have innocently asked questions or simple statements inflicted such desolation of character? A modest comparison of sibling assets or vulnerabilities can be an unintentional wound to the heart. Statements or questions such as, "Use your brain," "What's wrong with you?" "How did that happen?" "What were you thinking?" "You should be ashamed of yourself." or a simple laugh can be the familiar and innocent remarks of an unknowing parent or caregiver. Unfortunately, these remarks and others can have a negative impact on the fragile development of personality and self-understanding of …

Community Involvement: A Comparison Of Corporate And Individual Perceptions, Values, Attitudes, And Actions, Jacqueline K. Humpal Jan 2001

Community Involvement: A Comparison Of Corporate And Individual Perceptions, Values, Attitudes, And Actions, Jacqueline K. Humpal

Honors Capstones

Community involvement has become an important part of the social responsibility initiatives of many corporations. Many researchers have studied corporate social responsibility, as well as individual volunteerism; however, the activities of these generally have been studied separately, resulting in a relatively scant literature on the intersection of corporate and individual community involvement. The study reported herein was designed to address this deficiency, specifically by searching for linkages in values and practices between corporations and individuals. The study was conducted in two phases. In Phase I, interviews were conducted with the Human Resources Directors of six organizations in a Midwestern city …

Knowledge Management And The Learning Cycle : A Proposed Framework To Support Project Teams, Laura Deutsch Jan 2001

Knowledge Management And The Learning Cycle : A Proposed Framework To Support Project Teams, Laura Deutsch

Honors Capstones

The purpose ofthis study is to develop a framework to support project teams by looking into knowledge management and the learning cycle. Knowledge management's main objective is to capture, organize, and share what members of the organization know. The payoffs of effective knowledge management include fewer mistakes, less redundancy, quicker problem solving, better decision-making, reduced research, and improved end results. The learning cycle has been used to describe how people learn. Several different models are discussed and the basic concepts include understanding an experience or framing a project, planning what you need to learn, acting on the plans or getting …

Nursing Considerations In The Assessment Of An Autistic Child, Leanna Walker Jan 2001

Nursing Considerations In The Assessment Of An Autistic Child, Leanna Walker

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

A comprehensive assessment is essential for creating a nursing care plan for a child with autistic disorder. A standardized tool provides a guide for gathering assessment data; however, the method of assessment must be individualized to each patient. The nurse's role in planning care for a child with autism is discussed and implemented through development of a nursing care plan based on assessment of an autistic child. The assessment was performed using a version of Gordon's Functional Health Patterns, modified by the researcher to encompass all aspects of health concern for an autistic child.

Teaching Computing To Engineering Freshmen Through A High Tech Tools And Toys Laboratory, S. Mcknight, G. Tadmor, E. Carr Everbach, W. E. Cole, M. Ruane Jan 2001

Teaching Computing To Engineering Freshmen Through A High Tech Tools And Toys Laboratory, S. Mcknight, G. Tadmor, E. Carr Everbach, W. E. Cole, M. Ruane

Engineering Faculty Works

Freshman engineering courses in computing applications and programming often lack applications that are sufficiently engaging without being overwhelming. Program outputs and graphics within the reach of beginning students are often woefully primitive compared to computer graphics that are available in commercial gaming software. The students’ lack of background in engineering subjects commonly leads to applications that are simplistic, mechanical (e.g., number sorting), or heavily flavored toward mathematics or physics concepts (such as fluid friction) that student have only an uneasy grasp on. We have developed a two- quarter-hour freshman computing course taught entirely in a “High Tech Tools and Toys …

Women, Nationalism And The Romantic Stage: Theatre And Politics In Britain, 1780–1800, Betsy Bolton Jan 2001

Women, Nationalism And The Romantic Stage: Theatre And Politics In Britain, 1780–1800, Betsy Bolton

English Literature Faculty Works

In the 1780s and 1790s, theatre critics described the stage as a state in political tumult, while politicians invoked theatre as a model for politics both good and bad. In this study, Betsy Bolton examines the ways Romantic women performers and playwrights used theatrical conventions to intervene in politics. Reading the public performances of Emma Hamilton and Mary Robinson through the conventions of dramatic romance, Bolton suggests that the romance of national identity developed by writers such as Souther and Wordsworth took shape in complex opposition to these unruly women. Setting the conventions of farce against those of sentiment, playwrights …
