In examining the attacks on the U.S. on September 11, we must first identity the perpetrators of the crimes. It is generally assumed, plausibly, that their origin is the Middle East region, and that the attacks probably trace back to the Osama Bin Laden network, a widespread and complex organization, doubtless inspired by Bin Laden but not necessarily acting under his control. Let us assume that this is true. A sensible person would try to ascertain Bin Laden’s views, and the sentiments of the large reservoir of supporters of much of what he says throughout the region. About all …

Field And Laboratory Studies On The Development And Control Of Soil Water Repellency Of Sand Root Zone Mixes, Whitney Elmore

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Localized dry spots (LDS) associated with water repellent (i.e., hydrophobic) soils have detrimental effects on the survival, playability, and aesthetic value of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris) used for golf course putting greens. The development of water-repellent soils, using molarity of ethanol water droplet tests to determine soil hydrophobicity, wetting agent evaluations, and water retention based on percent organic matter were investigated. Greenhouse, field, and laboratory studies were conducted at Western Kentucky University beginning in 2000 and ending in 2001. The greenhouse study was initiated to investigate the type of soil most capable of producing a hydrophobic condition. Using hydrophilic sand …

As late as 1966, Martin Wight could still pose the question: “why is there no international relations theory?” By this he meant the absence of a tradition of speculation about relations between states, family of nations, or the international community, comparable to that of political theory as speculation about the state. To the extent that it did exist, it was marked by “intellectual and moral poverty” caused both by the prejudice imposed by the sovereign state and the belief in progress (Wight 1995: 15-16 &19). Unlike political theory, which has been progressivist in its concern with pursuing interests of …

Design And Construction Of A Space-Borne Optical Tweezer Apparatus, Andrew Resnick Nov 2001

Design And Construction Of A Space-Borne Optical Tweezer Apparatus, Andrew Resnick

Physics Faculty Publications

A compact optical tweezer package has been developed for use on a microscope to be flown on the International Space Station as part of a series of experiments in colloid crystallization. A brief introduction to the principles of single-beam optical tweezer operation will be presented, after which a detailed system layout will be shown. Special design requirements due to the spaceflight nature of the hardware will also be discussed. The tweezer apparatus is capable of trapping many particles through use of a two-axis acousto-optical deflector. The trap strength is sufficient to perform the required science (50 pN at Δn=0.2). The …

Structural And Functional Analysis Of Interhelical Interactions In The Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Gp41 Envelope Glycoprotein By Alanine-Scanning Mutagenesis, Min Lu, Marisa O. Stoller, Shilong Wang, Jie Liu, Melinda B. Fagan, Jack H. Nunberg Nov 2001

Structural And Functional Analysis Of Interhelical Interactions In The Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Gp41 Envelope Glycoprotein By Alanine-Scanning Mutagenesis, Min Lu, Marisa O. Stoller, Shilong Wang, Jie Liu, Melinda B. Fagan, Jack H. Nunberg

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Membrane fusion by human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is promoted by the refolding of the viral envelope glycoprotein into a fusion-active conformation. The structure of the gp41 ectodomain core in its fusion-active state is a trimer of hairpins in which three antiparallel carboxyl-terminal helices pack into hydrophobic grooves on the surface of an amino-terminal trimeric coiled coil. In an effort to identify amino acid residues in these grooves that are critical for gp41 activation, we have used alanine-scanning mutagenesis to investigate the importance of individual side chains in determining the biophysical properties of the gp41 core and the membrane …

Law As Craft, Brett G. Scharffs Nov 2001

Law As Craft, Brett G. Scharffs

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Article explores the similarities between the law and other craft traditions, such as carpentry, pottery, and quilting. Its thesis is that law--and in particular adjudiction---combine elements of what Aristotle described as practical wisdom, or phronesis, and craft, or techne. Craft knowledge is learned practically through experience and demonstrated through practice, and is contrasted with other concepts, including art, science, mass production, craftiness, and hobby. Crafts are characterized by four simutaneous identities. First, crafts are made by hand-one at a time-and require not only talent and skill, but also experience and what Karl Llewellyn called "situation sense." Second, crafts are …

Design Of An Fpga-Based High-Speed Filter-Decimator For The Gifts Imaging Interferometer, Scott E. Budge, Charles R. O'Brien Nov 2001

Design Of An Fpga-Based High-Speed Filter-Decimator For The Gifts Imaging Interferometer, Scott E. Budge, Charles R. O'Brien

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents the design of an FPGA-based frame filter-decimator for the geostationary imaging Fourier transform spectrometer (GIFTS). The decimator reduces samples from two 128/spl times/128 sample imaging arrays from 1638.4 fps to 102.4 complex fps for the long wave IR (LWIR) band and from 1638.4 fps to 204.8 complex fps for the medium wave IR (MWIR) band. The design uses a novel parallel pipeline architecture to handle the bandpass sampling and decimation of the 16 k array samples which arrive a frame-at-a-time. The design is challenging because of significant speed, size, weight and power restrictions for satellite implementation.

A Fast Full-Search Adaptive Vector Quantizer For Video Coding, Scott E. Budge, Christian B. Peel Nov 2001

A Fast Full-Search Adaptive Vector Quantizer For Video Coding, Scott E. Budge, Christian B. Peel

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a novel VQ structure which provides very good quality encoding for video sequences and exploits the computational savings gained from a fast-search algorithm. It uses an adaptive-search, variable-length encoding method which allows for very fast matching of a wide range of transmission rates. Both the encoding quality and the computational benefits from the fast-search algorithm are presented. Simulations show that full-search tree residual VQ (FTRVQ) can provide up to 3 dB improvement over a similar RVQ encoder on video sequences.

Sensitivity Of Bovine Blastocyst Gene Expression Patterns To Culture Environments Assessed By Differential Display Rt-Pcr., D R Natale, P A De Sousa, M E Westhusin, A J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

The use of culture media to support the development of preimplantation embryos to the blastocyst stage is often associated with detrimental effects on normal development. These effects have been uncovered largely by investigating the phenotypic abnormalities displayed by fetuses and newborns derived from cultured preimplantation embryos. Research to understand the impact of culture on the embryonic developmental programme has focused on embryo metabolism, gene expression and genomic imprinting. We have used differential display RT-PCR to examine culture influences on global transcript pools in bovine embryos. Others have examined culture influences on candidate "marker genes" in cultured murine, ovine and bovine …

Component-Based Software Development, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Miriam Capretz, Dahai Li Nov 2001

Component-Based Software Development, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Miriam Capretz, Dahai Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Component-based software development (CBSD) strives to achieve a set of pre-built, standardized software components available to fit a specific architectural style for some application domain; the application is then assembled using these components. Component-based software reusability will be at the forefront of software development technology in the next few years. This paper describes a software life cycle that supports component-based development under an object-oriented framework. Development time versus software life cycle phases, which is an important assessment of the component-based development model put forward, is also mentioned.

Local Impurity-Assisted Conductance In Magnetic Tunnel Junctions, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, David G. Pettifor Nov 2001

Local Impurity-Assisted Conductance In Magnetic Tunnel Junctions, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, David G. Pettifor

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

Using a simple tight-binding model and the Kubo formula we have calculated the lateral distribution of the tunneling conductance across a magnetic tunnel junction probed by STM. We find that the presence of an isolated impurity within the barrier layer can cause a spike in the conductance distribution, which is in agreement with recent experiments. We show that the local tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) is very sensitive to the electronic state of the impurity and to the lateral position of the tip. The latter dramatic variation in TMR could be detected by STM.

Modeling Bighorn Sheep Habitat In Northwest Nebraska, Kyle M. Forbes Nov 2001

Modeling Bighorn Sheep Habitat In Northwest Nebraska, Kyle M. Forbes

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In recent years geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing technologies have been used extensively in habitat suitability modeling. By incorporating these technologies, scientists often gain the ability to formulate and implement a more detailed habitat suitability model with the addition of more detailed spatial information. A habitat suitability model was developed to quantify and describe the available suitable Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) habitat in the Pine Ridge of northwestern Nebraska and determine if a minimum viable population (MVP) of this species can be supported naturally in the region. The model included a strong spatial …
