Public lands designated as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System are removed from multiple-use management for protection of their natural condition. Opponents argue that "locking up" the natural resources on these lands through designation will undermine the rural economies in the west that are dependent upon extractive industries such as mining and logging. Proponents argue that the "Old West" reliance on extractive industries is declining and, in the "New West", wilderness promotes economic development in rural communities by preserving the amenity values that draw population and employment to the region. In Australia today, ADR processes are recognised not only as a distinct system of dispute resolution, but also as a system that interacts interdependently with the legal system. This is most clearly demonstrated in the context of court-related mediation, which is increasingly seen as an effective way to increase access to, participation in, and satisfaction with the way legal disputes are resolved. Cappelletti categorises ADR as the third wave in the worldwide access-to-justice movement. ADR provides a different approach and a different sort of justice for solving disputes — what Cappelletti labels ‘co-existential justice’.

Current models of interpersonal communication assume that estimation of listener's knowledge is a basis for message formulation. By introducing methodological modifications to the Fussell and Krauss paradigm, the present study provides more definitive evidence for the use of knowledge estimation in message productions.

The objective of this study is to review the information regarding the development of puberty in gilts and how it influences subsequent reproductive performance such an understanding can be used to improve mating efficiency in gilts. The percentage of gilts in a herd strongly influences overall productivity. The first management decision that has to be made about gilts entering the breeding herd, is the timing of the first breeding. This largely depends on when puberty develops. Puberty in gilts is defined as the time when the first oestrus and ovulation occurs followed by regular oestrous cycles. On average, gilts attain …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study was conducted in 78 dairy cows(50 repeat breeders and 28 normal cows, with no history of breeding difficulty) from 6 livestock regions of Thailand. Observations were made on the lesions of granular vulvitis and bacteriology performed in order to isolate Ureaplasma diversum. Swabs were taken from 3 sites; the clitoral fossa, the dorsal vulva lips and the external cervical osteum. The isolation of U. diversum was carried out using Taylor Robinson Medium. Immunohistochemical Detection Of Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis In A Cat, Nopadon Pirarat, Yumi Une, Yasuo Nomura

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A female, 10-month old, mixed breed cat showed clinical signs of severe dehydration, purulent nasal discharge, dyspnea, severe crepitating lung sounds and no response to antibiotic treatment. Upon necropsy, histopathology revealed severe, diffuse, fibrinopurulent pleuropneumonia and numerous, homogeneous, amphophilic, intranuclear inclusion bodies in the pulmonary alveolar macrophages, bronchial and alveolar epithelium and bronchial glandular epitheliums. Immunohistochemical studies using 3 different monoclonal, anti-Feline Herpesvirus type 1 antibodies, revealed immunoreactivity of viral antigen in the lung that was associated with the histopathological changes. Monoclonal, anti-glycoprotein B, antibody showed the strongest immunoreactivity.

Pollution is a result of disturbance produced by human intervention to the natural equilibrium. In the case of El-Ain El-Sukhna, an artificial island obstructed the flow causing trash accumulation. A numerical model was used to investigate both the effect of the artificial island on the circulation and the mitigation effect of the proposed alternative.

The goal of this project was to synthesize 3,4-fused indoles having a variety of ring sizes and a variety of functional groups. This has been accomplished by the development of a novel palladium-catalyzed route to 3,4-fused indoles. The key steps are two palladium-catalyzed reactions, an intramolecular Heck reaction followed by a reductive N-heteroannulation. Using this route, a number of 3,4-fused indoles were prepared in acceptable yields.

Influence Of The West Virginia Dome On Paleocurrent Patterns In The Upper Devonian-Lower Mississippian Price Formation In The Central Appalachians, Sheldon James Murphy

Upper Devonian-Lower Mississippian sedimentation was influenced by a positive area known as the West Virginia Dome located in the Central Appalachians of West Virginia. Paleocurrent data collected from the Price Formation demonstrates the significance of the dome on paleoflow patterns. Exposures in West Virginia are located along the Allegheny Front and include the lowermost marine Oswayo Member, Riddlesburg Shale Member, unnamed Upper Member and the uppermost non-marine Rockwell Member. These units overlie the Devonian Hampshire Formation or Greenland Gap Formation and underlie the Mississippian Greenbrier Limestone or Maccrady Formation. At the center of the dome the Price Formation is absent …

The purpose of this study was to provide information that might be useful to researchers and extension personnel at West Virginia University in developing and designing educational programs concerning pest management for corn farmers. This research identified current trends in management practices, insect, fungal, and weed problems, and educational needs so that instructional materials can be designed to meet clientele needs. Data were collected via 100 questionnaires mailed to farmers in the top ten corn producing counties in West Virginia. In porcine ovaries, endothelin-1 (ET-1) may have an autocrine/paracrine role in follicular development. Endothelin-converting enzyme-1 (ECE-1) converts big endothelin-1 to ET-1. In situ hybridization was used to determine the ovarian compartment that synthesizes ECE-1. ECE-1 mRNA was detected in granulosa cells of large (10 mm) and medium (3 mm) antral follicles. This study, in conjunction with previous studies suggests a novel autocrine role of ET-1 as a possible local ovarian factor of follicular development. ET-1 may play a role during prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha-induced luteal regression in the cow. Effects of PGF2 alpha treatment were examined during early and mid-luteal …

Raptor abundance and diversity were compared between 4 treatments (grassland, shrub/pole, fragmented forest, and intact forest) over 3 seasons (migration, summer, and winter) on 3 mountaintop/valley fill mines in southern West Virginia. Habitat characteristics of Red-shouldered Hawks (Buteo lineatus) were examined at landscape and microhabitat scales. Forty-eight points were surveyed monthly (Feb. 2000--Jan. 2001) using broadcast calls. I quantified microhabitat characteristics within an 11.3 m radius plot and landscape characteristics within 1000 and 564 m buffer zones at each point. The discovery of fractal phenomenon in computer-related areas such as network traffic flow leads to the hypothesis that many computer resources display fractal characteristics. The goal of this study is to apply fractal analysis to computer memory usage patterns. We devise methods for calculating the Holder exponent of a time series and calculating the fractal dimension of a plot of a time series. These methods are then applied to memory-related data collected from a Unix server. Two methods of improving efficiency of coal based power generation are integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) and pressurized fluidized-bed combustion (PFBC). Both of these options require high-temperature gas stream particle cleanup for optimum efficiency. Candle filters in a pressurized vessel have received the greatest amount of attention in dealing with this topic, but problems still persist and there does not seem to be clear-cut answer to the problem. Paints and caulks typically contain (spherical) fumed silica particulates as viscosity enhancers. A similar viscosity enhancement can be achieved by using aramid fibrids. Aramid fibrids are believed to form microstructures in suspensions because of the "space-filling" nature of their shapes and thus provide a convenient means of introducing desired rheological behavior for various commercial applications.;The flow responses of aramid fibrids dispersed in mixtures of corn syrup and water were determined in dynamic shear, steady shear, low shear capillary, and extensional stretching flows. Studies show that material handling cost makes up between 20 and 50 percent of the total operating cost. A new methodology for high resolution reservoir characterization is proposed. It combined the advantages of the surface seismic (low resolution, large coverage) and crosswell seismic (improved resolution, small coverage).;The process involves deconvolution of a low resolution signal (surface seismic traces) into a high resolution crosswell seismic trace. The problem has multiple solutions and an analytical solution is hard or difficult to be developed.;This project proved that it is possible to predict high-resolution crosswell seismic traces using low-definition surface seismic traces. The fuel economy data thus obtained were compared with those of the in-use heavy-duty hybrid electric vehicles. For this the drive cycles are modified to represent realistic expectations of the dynamic performance of vehicles. Moisture diffusion was studied through vinyl ester samples containing up to 5 wt% montmorillonite clay; two different kinds of clay surface treatments were employed to make the clay compatible with the vinyl ester resin. These nanocomposites were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mechanical property measurements, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM pictures showed that the clay platelets were either exfoliated or intercalated, and the two different surface treatments resulted in different dispersion characteristics.
