A home or farmstead windbreak is a strip of vegetation, generally consisting of multiple rows of trees and/or shrubs that shelters a residence and related structures from the negative effects of wind. While windbreaks can provide excellent food and cover for a variety of wildlife species, their primary function is to reduce wind velocity on the leeward side of the windbreak. The degree of protection depends upon the density and height of the windbreak. However, windbreaks will typically protect an area on their leeward side of 10 times the height of the windbreak (Figure 1). Benefits of windbreaks may even …

Colorful tomato salads are a seasonal menu item for some restaurants. The many colors of tomato fruit available include orange, green, white, yellow and, of course, red. Producers growing for this market have a choice of several cultivars of each color, and sometimes several fruit shapes within a color. Many of the cultivars are open-pollinated but some hybrids are available. Prior experience at Rhoads Farm and elsewhere has shown that many open-pollinated cultivars yield poorly under Indiana conditions, making them an unprofitable crop. The trials presented in this report were established to evaluate tomato cultivars for the restaurant salad market.

Northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) are a nonmigratory, small game bird found throughout Indiana and the eastern United States. Once very common throughout the agricultural landscape, recent population indices of this native species continue to be at or near historical lows in Indiana (Figure 1).

Loss of habitat is most likely responsible for the declines in bobwhite quail over the past half century. A shift in agricultural practices during this time is the primary cause. When quail populations in Indiana and the Midwest were much higher in the 1950s, farming practices were different than today. Farms were generally divided into …

Until 1991 most submariners were automatically disqualifed from submarine service after their first kidney stone. The basis for disqualification was the belief that these individuals would be at risk for recurrent episodes, which could result in mission compromising hazardous medical evacuations from deployed submarines. The purpose of this study is to examine the ramifications of returning submariners back to submarine duty following diagnosis of a renal stone.

Plant spacing is known to influence the size of pumpkins. To demonstrate this influence two jack-o-lantern cultivars and two giant pumpkin cultivars were grown at narrow and wide in-row spacings at Coulter's Farm in Westville, Indiana.

Biological communities are frequently exposed to environmental changes that cause measurable responses in properties of the community (hereafter called environmental drivers). Predicting how communities respond to changing environmental drivers is a fundamental goal of ecology. Making predictions, however, can be very difficult, particularly when multiple environmental drivers change simultaneously and there are interactions among the drivers. We investigated the effects of the interaction between changes in nutrient loading and changes in colored dissolved organic matter (measured as dissolved organic carbon, DOC) on the dynamics of phytoplankton communities over a 7‐yr period. In her paper "(Post)Feminism, Transnationalism, the Maternal Body, and Michèle Roberts," Ayako Mizuo argues that the question and problematics of feminism have diversified over the last few decades. Diverse and competing voices have been, nonetheless, incorporated into the paradigm of an equality and difference sexual dichotomy. Further, recent discussions about feminism suggest the problematization of gender differences. Consequently, exponents of postfeminism are compelled to ask what comes next? In his paper, "Western Culture and the Ambiguous Legacies of the Pig," Benton Jay Komins provides a cultural lineage of the pig by the example and reading of Piggies by the Beatles. Komins observes that Piggies enacts the possibilities of the ubiquitous pig in Western culture by juxtaposing swinish antics with interpretations of limitation and heartbreak thereby forcing listeners to blur the distinctions between struggle, unrequited love, and boorishness. Komins continues his discussion by locating this juxtaposition within the Western pantheon of real, metaphorical, and imaginary animals, where the pig is noted to have obsessively endured.
