Potential Runoff Accumulation In Wheatbelt Towns Of Western Australia, Mahtab Ali, Travis Cattlin, Neil Coles, Sharam Sharafi

Resource management technical reports

Describes an analysis of flood runoff volumes from 16 small, gauged catchments in the agricultural areas of south western Australia. It also describes methods for estimating flood runoff volumes from ungauged catchments. The independent variables found to be statistically significant in explaining the variability in flood runoff volumes from the gauged catchments were catchment area, mean annual rainfall and the percentage of the catchment that was cleared. No soil factor was found to be significant.

Successful soybean production is greatly affected by variety selection for a given growing area. This publication reports the agronomic performance of entries in the 2001 South Dakota performance trials for conventional (non-Roundup Ready) and RoundupReady™ soybean varieties. Important factors in variety selection include yield, maturity, plant height, lodging resistance, and Phytophthora root rot resistance. In the case of public varieties, additional information including emergence, shattering, and iron chlorosis scores (Table A) are available to assist in making variety selections.

It is estimated that 150,000 landmines of all categories are currently in Lebanon. The exact location of most of these weapons remains unknown. In addition, a large number of UXO continues to pose a serious threat to local populations, particularly in the south.

Humanitarian Demining In Egypt: A Half-Century Struggle, Timothy Kennedy

Over the years and with limited resources, Egypt has demonstrated a strong commitment to eradicating the landmine threat through its dedicated Army Corps of Engineers demining campaign. Since 1948, with limited financing and direction, they report clearing approximately 31 percent of the total mined areas and 51 percent of the mines or UXO. These clearance operations have been costly—Egypt expended over $91 million (U.S.) in national funds and lost over 200 deminers. Competing priorities and dwindling financial resources imposed a halt to active HD operations in 1998. Egypt requested U.S. government HD assistance, and the U.S. Central Command developed a …

It is shown that the concept "safety factor," as presently used as a criterion for declaring a demined area safe for use, is impractical and should be replaced by its complement, called "risk factor," which stands for the ratio of the size of the mine-polluted portion of a demined field to its total area. An equation expressing the risk as a function of the efficiencies of the demining processes applied is developed. The country is divided into 19 administrative units, called governorates.

Although the dangers posed by landmines are particularly acute in the Middle East, responses to the Ottawa Convention are limited. Jordan, Sudan, Tunisia and Qatar are State Parties, and Algeria has signed but not ratified the Ottawa Convention. The lack of signatories in the region reflects the continuing conflict and instability as well as the role that mines play in territorial defense.

In Israel, there is significant support for both the concept and effort to abolish landmines, but security considerations and continued warfare outweigh arguments in favor of accession to the Convention. Israel is active in international cooperative programs to …

The cover title sometimes appears as “The Heritage.” The publication’s purpose was to support the society and to publish information about the genealogy, culture, and history of Muhlenberg County. A separate annual index was printed each year for volumes 1-14. Afterwards, each issue was indexed separately. Generally, the index is to surnames only.

This report provides details of the experiences of the 1995 cohort of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (abbreviated to LSAY Y95) at a single point in time. Information on this cohort was first collected in 1995, when these young people were Year 9 students in Australian schools. The reference period for this report is 2000. Nearly all of the cohort had completed secondary school, and more than half were undertaking some type of study.

On October 1, 2001 the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) officially released twenty-two documents that comprise the initial set of new International Mine Action Standards (IMAS). The standards replace the International Standards for Humanitarian Mine Clearance Operations. The new standards represent the culmination of two years of work to revise and expand the old standards based on changes in practices, procedures and norms that emerged from the continuing operations of mine action programs around the globe.

This study investigated the impact of student background characteristics, college experience variables, federal financial aid awards, and college outcome variables on degree completion rates for a cohort of two-year college students. A model for institutional research suggested by St. John (1992) was adapted and this study sought to determine whether financial aid awards and student characteristic variables influenced degree completion rates for the cohort of students identified in this study.

This study examines the sociodemographics, drug use, criminal, and treatment histories of 598 residential and outpatient legally coerced drug treatment seekers in the Kentucky Treatment Outcome and Performance Pilot Studies Enhancement Project. Analyses examined whether users/addicts entering chemical dependency treatment under legal coercion differed from nonlegally coerced treatment seekers. Stanley Cohen's theoretical model of social control provided the theoretical framework for the study. Results showed demographic and behavioral differences were noted between respondents under no coercion and those under legal coercion on gender, age, educational status, pretreatment criminality and current treatment modality. Lead has been mined by man for centuries with evidence of its use dating back 6000 years. Chronic exposure to lead can result in encephalopathy, anemia, and nephropathy. Today, cases of lead poisoning are uncommon; however, lead continues to be incorporated into the body through subclinical exposures. These low dosages of lead have been shown to have a deleterious effect on the immune system. Experimental animals exposed to low levels of lead are unable to effectively respond to a number of bacterial and viral challenges. Research suggests that phonemic awareness predicts later reading achievement and that children from low-SES families are "at-risk" for failing to develop phonemic awareness. Before children enter school, they spend the majority of their time with their caregivers. Therefore, activities that take place in the home are of importance when looking at what fosters development. The present study focused on children participating in two Head Start programs and on their families as well. This thesis evaluates the ability of Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains resistant to the compound DIMBOA [2, 4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-2h-l,4- benzoxazin-3(4H)-one] to infect corn. DIMBOA is a secondary plant metabolite and is believed to have antimicrobial properties and provides resistance to the plant against microbial infection. Agrobacteriummediated genetic transformation technique can be employed to genetically alter most dicotyledonous plant species. However, such transformation has been limited in monocotyledonous plants, especially corn. One of the factors responsible for this recalcitrance is the presence of DIMBOA in corn shoots. Dietary supplementation with the antioxidants vitamin E and selenium (Se) has been shown to be beneficial against the intracellular parasite Trypanosoma cruzi during experimental Chagas' disease. Supplementation of mice with vitamin E and selenium at levels well above the recommended daily allowance for these two substances results in significantly decreased parasitemia levels and increased longevity. However, the mechanistic role of the antioxidants in this process is not well understood. It is known that vitamin E and selenium can reduce oxidative stress and improve host immune responses. This study investigated the relationship between time perspective (TP) and the personality dispositions of optimism, pessimism, and realism with regard to their proposed influence on three measures that collectively assessed subjective well-being (SWB). The Depression-Happiness Scale (McGreal & Joseph, 1993) assessed happiness or the presence of positive affect and the absence of negative affect, the cognitiveaffective components of SWB. The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985) provided the measurement of subjective life satisfaction, the essential final cognitive-judgmental component of SWB.
